Spud Saver is an illustrated novel about a potato named Spud. Spud was thrown away by a family when he started to grow potato eyes and made stopping food waste his mission. He spreads awareness of food waste and helps children through food waste dilemmas. This book will be like the Captain Underpants series in that it is a comic book mixed with a novel. It is targeted towards elementary schoolers and is both educational and entertaining. To me, reaching out to children is crucial to solving any issue and a fun book seems like the perfect way to relate to them.

Once I learned about food waste, I wondered why I hadn't heard about it that much before. I realized that there aren't many opportunities for younger grades to access and discuss this information. This book will give children the opportunity to learn about food waste in a digestible (no pun intended) and fun way. This is a pretty new idea and I only have a rough outline of the plot, but I believe it is a engaging and exciting way to look at food waste.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

I am very interested in having this be an entirely student made book, so I would consult my peers for ideas and illustrations. I would then distribute copies of the book to people in my neighborhood and at my school to see if there was interest in it. I would also give some to teachers to see if they think it could be used as an educational tool. It would be very important to do this because I would need to see if people liked the concept before moving forward.

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

I would love to have input on the idea from the IDEO community. Do you think it is a good idea? I would also love to hear any ideas that the OpenIDEO community has for the book. I only have a rough idea of plot and characters, so there is room for input!

Hey Veronica!  Your idea is very creative and interesting.  I love the way that you are targeting children to educate since they are the future.  How could you make sure Spud is actually informing the children to reduce food waste instead of being something for just entertainment?  However, the concept of making this book run by students is really cool since you're getting many more people involved with the reducing food waste movement.  Spud could go on adventurous throughout the world to make the storyline more interesting and informative to kids also.  Overall, I genuinely enjoy your idea!

Hi, Veronica! I like your idea that we should have something to educate kids on the food waste, and a comic book is actually a good way to get kids' interests. The comic book might be able to offer them the concept of food waste, however, how can we be sure that they can apply this to their real life to reduce the food waste instead of just reading this as a comic book for entertaining? Besides, there are not that many kids reading comic books nowadays, so maybe we can convert this idea into a small video or a video game. Overall, I really like your idea and the "Spud"! It is really cute and you did a good job!!!

Hi Veronica! I think your idea is really cool and I agree that we don't learn a whole lot about food waste in school. If you were to go through with your idea, would you just make one book about Spud Saver or would you make it into a series? It would be cool if Spud Saver could go on lots of different adventures with all sorts of different types of food and learn about why that food was wasted and how that waste could be prevented. Also, maybe you could ask NDE or your elementary school if they would be interested in using your book!

Hi Veronica! Thank you for sharing your idea. I really like your design for Spud and the story behind Spud. There has been another idea about a 'Choose Your Own Adventure' story. Maybe there is an opportunity to get some ideas from each other and share thoughts. The post is here -
