Some grocery apps already keep track of what you're buying daily. What if it informed you before you milk goes bad?

Things it could include:

-A list of everything you bought/have

-Reminder eggs are going to expire soon (or the broth you bought a year ago)

-Suggestions for recipes with the items you bought (which some grocery stores already have)

-Ability to keep track of things in your fridge (take them off of the list/delete from app)

I'm always constantly forgetting I have lettuce in the back of my fridge or can't remember when I bought my eggs. I get mad at myself for throwing things away (spending $3 on lettuce instead of coffee). I've often googled "How long are eggs good for?" And sometimes they're good even after the expiration date. Or even living by yourself can be it's own challenge. You might not use a half carton of eggs, and might need suggestions of quick things to cook.

This is a simple thing that can be adapted.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

Having a hand written version of this on my own, with my family and friends. See if we're more conscious about our food if we know when it might go bad, keeping a list on our fridge. Trying the "Best by" date v.s. what the internet suggests for food expiration.

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

Do other states, cities or individuals use a rewards card or app for their grocery store? Do you forget that you have food in your fridge? Would you be willing to do a trial keeping track of your own food and expiration?

Love this idea too! So a couple questions: does the barcode of a product contain its expiration date? To your knowledge, do any grocery stores currently associate purchase history with your membership number, and then let you view it online? That would be amazing so the user doesn't need to manually enter any data.

Jacob Schual-Berke I found out there are barcode types that can include the information of the expiration date, but it's not the type that is on most foods. It could still give you a general idea, like check your eggs after three weeks or something like that. Otherwise, it could be something food producers change into.
