Optimizing the lifecycle of (food) waste.

Eden is a system of behavior change that is centered around maximizing the use of the "whole food" from cradle to cradle. We plan to implement tracking technology at different lifecycle stages to illustrate the full value/opportunity within a food/waste item. We walk through a sample lifecycle of an apple:

1. The moment it's harvested in a community garden,

2. Waiting patiently in a stack at a supermarket until purchase,

3. Time in a person's home (sitting in a fridge until consumption),

4. Hopeful repurpose as food, seeds (future apple tree), or compost.

What early, lightweight experiment might you try out in your own community to find out if the idea will meet your expectations?

We'd first focus on the educational materials/content around the "full use" of waste and run tests in multiple environments/key lifecycle nodes: supermarkets, restaurants, farmer's markets, community gardens, etc. For example, "How to use the whole apple" content with visuals and a step-by-step guide.

What skills, input or guidance from the OpenIDEO community would be most helpful in building out or refining your idea?

The most helpful skills to refine the idea would be technical and content/messaging. Specifically, technical guidance on QR codes, "smart sticker" (temperature detection), and "waste meter" tracking components of our solution. We are also focused on structuring content to drive behavior change (best use of food waste). We would love opportunities to work with folks engaged in agriculture/food supply chain, as well as community members engaged in sustainable design for further validation.

Hello, Ariella Chivil Thank you for sharing your team's idea. I was reading your post and thought if the direct manipulation or attachment to produce is not readily available(technology or investment to create such technology) to inform the buyer how long the freshness would last, we can start creating behavioral changes by informing average freshness dates on all produces at the market. It would be similar to nutrition facts on boxed/canned products.

Thanks Ariella for sharing what you came up during the NYC OpenIDEO Chapter Hack your waste event. I like the idea of creating awareness to drive behaviors' changes and there's quite a bit of research showing that this can work. I am curious to understand better what would be the experience of your users and how you are planning to achieve behaviors' change. From what I understand, you're thinking of making any customers aware of the life cycle of food products such as an apple. How will this information be displayed? How can a user learn about the life cycle of a product?  Thank you!
