Our long journey toward a sustainable city has just begun. We work with diverse communities to create community gardening in vacant or underutilized lands around Bandung to become productive urban farming using companion planting approach. We conduct social mapping to search for potential land and community as well as approaching them through the Community Association (RW) as the reachable local government. Every community association is targeted to have two community gardens. We aim at working with 15 community associations (equals to 30 community gardens) in Bandung. So far, the city of Bandung has 1580 community associations. We believe that this program could cover and work with at least 10 percent of the community association (158 RW) that having vacant or underutilized lands and aim at impacting approximately 1000 households within 2020. Our mission is to create 2 garden in 158 community association in Bandung city, with minimum area cover 100m2. 31,600 m2 community garden

Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

Our concerns about the city of Bandung are raised based on some facts. First, the inability to be self-sustained. We realize that the dynamics of citizens are also interdependently close with the ability to arrange their food supply, which then affects their food security. Despite having better access to technology, most urban citizens do not have the independence to fulfill their basic needs.  According to the data from the food and agricultural department of Bandung, approximately 96 percent of the food supply is highly dependent on other regions. Therefore, the citizen of Bandung is highly sensitive to the increasing food prices that also become a significant burden for low-income households.

Second, there is a limited space caused by immense population growth as well as the massive city development. We see that the city crowdedness has inversely disproportional with numbers of vacant or neglected underutilized lands belong to individuals. In reality, it is profoundly affecting the degradation of social capital and social institutions, which is now quite faded.

With a strong desire to assist the local government in creating a sustainable city, we initiate the Teras Hijau Project. Based on the definition of a sustainable city that aims to address healthy economic growth for its people as well as achieving a sustainable environment, we collaborate with proactive societies from the lower and middle-income citizens in Bandung to develop their city collectively. Hence, expanding their access to the fairer economic system at the same time.

Below we also attach you an sample of our community garden that was used by local government as location of world's three day 2019.

Although the our program to promote urban farming with companion planting approach is not limited to any specific  community, but our priority target will be  focused on helping family from low income families.  We come to them and doing social mapping to see and explore their  gardening intention as well to promote our mission.  We also work with local community association to help community engagement.  

We want to share our values to every body that  starting from gardening and being followed by other practices to support sustainable  at our home  could be a opportunity to improve our well being as well as economic resilience.

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

1. Generating community interest in gardening as well as willingness to collaborate to work in a community gardening

2. Introducing companion planting needs  hard efforts. many people do not believe that they could reduce their gardening costs only by planting crops and it companion such as  flowers and herbs.  Majority urban people look agriculture as difficult and high cost.

3. Because our priority target is low income families, their orientation of agriculture should produce them new incomes 

4.  Due to the limited access of our main target community to the technology, so the technology adoption may be time consume.  We use different technology at different road map of our vision

We have three pillar actions: education, empowerment and entrepreneurship.  this pillar become our guidance to introduce and encourage people to do real actions for sustainability and urban farming with the community gardening is the initial stages

from 2019 until 2022 will be focus on increase awareness and intensively introduce companion planting to the society.  We will approach the community carefully and convince them through learning by doing practices.  We maintain our communication using what app group to discuss any issues related to the gardening.  During this year will target to increase the number of community garden and maintain community engagement on gardening both in their community gardens as well as their home.  

2022-2025 we will also develop the system as well as supporting technologies to assist us creating collective efforts and collaboration to optimize our program impact. We wish we had initiated some entrepreneurial practices in the community based on their interest and capacity

Our program actions is not a single issue of food security for urban, but also distribution of knowledge that agriculture is a large bio potential that could contribute us economic independence with various ways both new bio industry as well as Eco-tourism. we will invite youth to explore the various bio potential from community garden and develop their own bio tech business.

Toward 2050, the model that we develop in Bandung we wish could be copied and adopted for other city in Indonesia.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

In our imagination, there are many positive changes could create in the target community as well other society in Bandung.

1. The low income families could reduce their daily cost for food by getting chipper food from their community gardening as well as direct consume from their own garden at home

2. Generating new business development with community based approach 

3. Generating new start ups in bio tech concern

4. Generating new income from Eco tourism programs

5. Many youth will be more interest work in agriculture
