Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

Tabora region is my working place since 2017, It has more arable land for agriculture. This region has enough and well distribution of rainfall, it is a leading potential area in the central-western regions of the country, the main staple crops produced in this region are maize, rice paddy, sorghum, finger millets, beans and almost all cereal crops, root crops like Cassava and Potatoes, fruits and horticultural crops. The oil crops produced mainly are ground nuts and sunflower. The main cash crops produced are Tobacco and cotton. The region has plenty of water from different seasonal and permanent rivers. A plenty of water for domestic uses taped from Lake Victoria. Among the western zone regions Tabora is the leading for agricultural activities, this makes Tanzania being an exporter for food in the neighboring countries in the western borders like Burundi, Congo and Rwanda. Currently, upon introduction of cash crops like Tobacco and cotton has been affecting the production of food crops leading to food insecurity in the region and to the dependent regions like Kigoma, Dodoma and Singida. Also the effects of climate changes and poor knowledge on pre and post-harvesting technology are reasons to the food insecurity within the region, these factors must be worked upon to assure the food sustainability and availability for the future populations

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

Effects of climate changes, Poor Pre and post harvesting handling technology and cultivation of cash crops like Tobacco and cotton are reasons to the food insecurity within the region, these factors must be worked upon to assure constant food supply and availability within the area. The following are types of crops cultivated and consumed by the locals, it is a leading potential area in the central-western regions of the Tanzania, the main staple crops produced and consumed in this region are maize, rice paddy, sorghum, finger millets, beans cow peas, pigeon peas and fruits and horticulture crops. people in the area are Sukuma and Nyamwezi by tribes, they speaks Kiswahili the national language and locals Nyamwezi and Kisukuma languages. Although Tabora citizens produces varieties of crops but still suffer nutritional diseases due to lack of balanced diet, this is caused by lack of proper and nutritious meal to women and children. However, most of people can't afford three meals per day. The direct effects of not affording three meals per day is shown by poor attendance of children to school and malnutrition to children under 5 years of age

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

In Tanzania 75-80% of people are employed in an agriculture sector. In most cases farmers in Tanzania especially small-holder farmers are never a single crop growers, they used to cultivate diverse crop per season, for example in Tabora region farmers do cultivate a varieties of food crops rather than Tobacco and cotton which are the main cash crop. However, 90% of all farmers are small holders, whereby only 30% of their produce is sold in a formal market, while the rest 70% is sold in an informal market. Market access for different crops in Tabora has become a problem, as more than 15% of non-perishable crops and 30% of perishable crops are lost in the fields and stores before reaching the market places, this is due to lack of reliable knowledge of handling skills on agricultural products. However, only 10% of all agricultural products sold are processed, while 90% are sold in a raw state, therefore a large number of farmers in the area encounters big marketing and storage problems for their produce. The market problems has been increasing as farmers expands and increases their productions. To address this problems the country need to invest much in pre and post harvesting knowledge from different places in the world. The main problem in the region is food insecurity especially poor health to children under 5, women and youth. THE CURRENT CHALLENGES 2020- (i) The main causative for these problems are small holder famers to not fully participate in production of staple and horticultural crops than they do in cash crops (Tobacco and cotton) (ii) Current climatic conditions has changed the ecological environment, soils and rainfall patterns. The need for research and technological agriculture such as irrigation, use of fertilizers (organic and inorganic), use of certified seeds and agrochemicals is inevitable, there is a need for trainings and building capacity to famers. THE CHALLENGE IN 2050, in Tanzania the expected population in 2022 coming census is expected to be 60 – 65 Million as compared to 50 Million in the 2012 census. This increase of the populations indicate that there are needs to come up with technologies to assure food security for the coming years unless. The solution for this is to come up with sustainable agriculture through improved technologies in cultivations and post-harvest and storage to sustain the 2050 population

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

Tabora region has a potential of available land, small holder farmers are in access to land that is owned in traditional basis. There is a great potentials for different crop varieties. Sustainable food security will focus on making sure that the communities in the area have access to those potentials by improved knowledge and skills for maximum utilization of it. The project will focus on establishment of training centers for food security and health training centers. Different technologies for food storage and preservation will be trained like use of SILOs, air tight Drums and bags, use of integrated pest management (IPM) for cereals and roots crops, cultural practices for fruits and horticultural crops. To improve the health status of individuals and community in general, different training in balanced deity to women and pregnant mothers and in different levels of schools will be given. To reach the goal and objectives for sustainable food security the project will also collaborate with different levels of government leaders, example village leaders, Ward leaders and political figures like ward councilors and Members of parliaments (MPs), District departments and central government officials at the Ministry level. The project will work together with different Media Radio and TVs, Newspapers, publications and social Media like Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

The great future and potentials for the communities in Tabora region and Tanzania national in general is expected after people are assured with food and health matters. Women and youth are the working groups in the area, so when children and pregnant mothers are exposed to a nutritious and health meal, the healthy and powerful community will be built upon. The program will be focusing on the food security and sustainability. People will be taught on the sustainable agriculture practices while conserving the land and protecting the environment for the future population.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

FULL (FUTURE) VISION In the 2050 the access for food is very potential, preparation for food availability is to start in the early stages as we project many consequences for food security in the future, the proof for food insecurity in the coming years has been occurred in different countries worldwide where people and animals are suffering in access for food and water, the cause for this being the climate changes, ecological changes, erratic rainfall, changes of tradition, culture and life styles. TECHNOLOGY, Introduction for new technology for food production to small holder famers is now inevitable, different trainings and workshops are important to transform the agro technology from rain fed agriculture to irrigation technology. Training to improve productivity from 10-15 bags (500-750kgs)/ha to 25-30 bags (1250-1500kgs)/ha., this will be accomplished through use of certified seeds, use of proper agrochemicals and fertilizers, cultivations by farm implements and tools (tractors and drought animals). Farmers will benefit by different trainings and workshops on crop harvesting and storage techniques to avoid pre and post harvesting loses which is more than 15% for cereals and 30% for horticultural crops in the area. To assure the market availability for processed products by facilitating the formations of farmers agriculture marketing cooperatives societies (AMCOS) for cereals and horticultural crop produce. To link the farmers with financial credit institutions eg Banks (Agriculture Investment Banks ) This will go together with advising AMCOS to start their own processing plants so that in future they sale a processed products than raw produce. Different consultations will be done to all levels of Government including central and local government leaders and officials.
