Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.
This is because of the fact that I am an Ethiopian residing in Ethiopia since my birth date. Food self-sufficiency is a critical demand for the Ethiopian population. Though there prevails different socio-cultural setting, the people will definitely utilize hydroponic farming technologies as a means of addressing food insecurity since we all are living in a globalized world in exchange for food technologies by 2050.
Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.
The challenges that the venture intends to solve are described as of below:
The farm activities are fully environmentally-friendly. Most small-holder farmers in developing countries like Ethiopia produce their seeds and sell at the local markets with a lower current market price which makes them even not to cover their costs of production. These several centuries' production trend of practices and trends have to be radically changed as the traditional way of doing business is not a life-changing process and adversely hinders farmers particularly small-holder farmers not to grow at the expected rate. This can be substantiated with examples. In Ethiopia, for instance, on average, about 9 million people are in food shortage every year for that wider prevailing seeds’ demand-supply gaps in place. For this, only 3.5% of 12 million hectares of farmland are covered by improved seeds. This is the current trend of the Ethiopian context.

✓ The farm engages youth and women small-holder farmers in the out-grower scheme to have a contract with the farm to grow;
✓ My solution is superior to others because it mobilizes the locality's small-holder farmers' potential to produce and get benefited from the products produced;
✓ The farm uses climate-smart agriculture such as crop rotation, drip irrigation and so on as operation strategy during production;
✓ The farm uses technical expertise assistance from the nearby agricultural research center researchers;
✓ Seeds quality is tested and goes through the laboratory test of the nearby Seeds Laboratory Agency so that an approved certificate of assurance is provided before sales; ✓ Seeds are better kept during and post-harvest in a quality manner. During the farm we use fertilizers and post-harvest cleaning of seeds is implemented using rented cleaning machines and hand-picked methods;
✓ The added values are seeds are high yield varieties used and then cleaned and properly packed using our business logo and by explaining the cover of the packing materials explaining the name of the farm, seed type, its quality, quantity, and moisture to keep its quality, quantity and moisture rates;
✓ Apply hydroponic farm solution of Barley grass production in a green-house for efficient and smart use of water without soil;
✓ Barley grass for animal feed and produced in a week period and feed production in a week circular manner;
✓ Supply barley grass as animal feed both for own farm and for smallholder farmers &
✓ Use dung as organic fertilizer to regenerate soil fertility.
High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.
Besides the above short-term plans, by Vision 2050, Haile Wako Integrated Farm has the following high-level vision. Firstly conducting evidence-informed researches and realizing hydroponic farming technologies and establishing food processing companies so that food insecurity challenges of the region, particularly of Ethiopia, will be completely solved and ensure food security. Urban agriculture by vertical farming will be practiced so that climate smart-urban agriculture & water-smart technologies are fully applied, skilled labor force and specialization in vertical farming vis-a-vis hydroponics farming specialists will be graduated and recruited in the food industries so that other means of addressing not only food security but also combating climate change will then be fully addressed. The socio-cultural attitude of the people will be radically changed and the works towards hydroponics farming as an alternative farming system will be applied. Full political will and commitment of the government will via its adopted policies be in a place towards growth in hydroponic farming is in a place, social and economic inter-linkage between urban, semi-urban and rural agriculture will be realized, recycling of wastes and proper waste management of wastes will be realized, a minimal post-harvest loss will be actualized, other aquacultural activities will be developed along the hydroponics farming, resilient in employment of youth and women created, reliance on traditional rain-fed agriculture will be dropped to the minimal level, hydroponics farming by then addresses green & climate-resilient economic growth in a very smarter manner, higher probabilities of attracting local and foreign investors to invest in the sector and free movement of labor will be in a place within a food system, reliance on soil will gradually be eliminated via hydroponics farming, competing industries and smart industries in the food system.
