NARFA FOUNDATION is a relief organisation that has the vision and mission objectives of alleviating poverty amongst women and children. They partner with SIHP organisation to advance the needs and aspirations of the needy. MYFARM Africastartup has the objectives of introducing children to education production and marketing of farm products. Our members are beneficiaries of so many self-reliance entrepreneurship trainings and value addition to raw materials for preservation. BeeCause are renowned bee trainers that gave lot of trainings to SIHP membership

Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

SIHP has a very close and cordial grassroots support base in Jenung Kunda and it's 5 satellite villages. Jenung Kunda is a semi-Urban/Rural community that is comprised of committed youth and women volunteer capable of upholding SIHP visions, missions and values of year round livestock and horticultural production. It's vital to be in Jenung Kunda as the community supported by 5 surrounding villages and has offered 120

hectares of land as SIHP accelerator lab with plans of regional replication and restitution on the Gambia. SIHP's stances is, given requisite knowledge, skills and resources, local communities can withstand the

environmental pressures; thus made SIHP highly connected to these communities.

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

Jenung Kunda village historically emerged from three indigenous household families setup, that  opens its arm to more than 200 family compounds of diverse ethnolinguistic, tribal and cultural background. The village head, Alkali has adopted a traditional system of accommodating strangers on sound democratic governance, in such a way government security interventions to crimes, (if any exist) is sought after exhausting developed traditional dialogue and reconciliation, upon which only ALkali is mandated to order such requests. SIHP as a beckon of hope to house migrants, disadvantage youths and women, welcomed SIHP with committed, receptive and accommodative community to strangers; thus increasingly attracting more lands for residential.

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

SIHP 2020 and future 2050 food challenges are hindered by many factors such as education, environment, technology, policy.

SIHP already commence vegetable gardening and currently undergoing series of challenges.

Education, cultural and environmental analysis: SIHP found a big challenge to shift the local farming community mindset from cultural one seasonal subsistence farming to commercial farming with potential of value addition. However, with strategic initiatives and tactical implementation plans of partnership and collaboration, has helped not only host community, but satellite communities an improve environment of transfer and share knowledge gained to few members of many in our community step down training, monitoring and evaluation to ensure transformation towards future needs become a reality.

Dietary system: Average Gambian depends on rice as stapled foods such as rice (3 times daily) has rendered many post harvest lost. SIHP target focus in future food preservations has endeavours it's membership access training in value addition methods to transform our raw materials into finish goods.

Policy implementation bedsides land, estate agents are going extra mile in securing all Agricultural lands into residence. However, SIHP holistic approach, inclusive policies with community driven development design plans, community remains agile and loyal for SIHP to achieve future community food system. 

Technology: a daunting challenged that hindering SIHP to fully operate it's 120 hectares. However, local technology has kept us all the way moving with the help of good partnership relationship and cooperation to all and sundry.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

SIHP will address these challenges by:

 1. Putting the 120 hectares into full production 

2. Establish good partnership collaboration with local community/communities, government, and donor agencies, philanthropist supporters in order to establish good agricultural practices.

 3. Establish a manufacturing solution to process and distribute our products. 

4. Lobby to change government policies in relation to cheap imports which affect our food security. Implement environmental friendly technology in order to prevent soil and environment degeneration.  When SIHP objective is achieved, We will not only provide employment in agriculture, manufacturing and processing but in all sectors with support staff needed to facilitate its continued growth and development, eg. Plumbing electrical solution to future food self sufficiency drives through, year round livestock and horticultural production in the Gambia and beyond. 

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

In our shorter and medium term plans 14,500 Lives and livelihood of Jenung Kunda, SIHP host community and  5 surrounding communities namely: Jiboro Kuta ( new settlements) with population of 5000, Duwasu 1500, Sinchu 1000, Omorrto 2500, Jiboro koto (old) 4500; is expected to positively undergo a successful transformation in their social and economic endeavours, with increased education and awareness, increase and improve community food systems translating into better health, peace and progressive socioeconomic community development, secured household/food as well self-reliance Employment.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

In the long run of 2050 when SIHP would have been fully operational on her 120 hectares with much broader collaboration and partnerships with all stakeholders,  my anticipation of SIHP future food renewing and sustainability under microscopic view juxtaposition with environment, dietary systems, economic, culture, technology, policy...etc, my community/communities and Gambian people in general would be:

Environment: SIHP environment would be seen as a land designed into sections say 30 hectares be allocated to year round horticultural and livestock production, including apiculture and aquaculture. Another 50 hectares could be allocated to rice, been, maize, groundnuts, cassava, banana plantation...etc; another 25 be allocated ruminants, poultry production...etc; another 5 be a production centre for manufacturing and marketing...etc; 5 recreational and vocational centres and remaining 5 could be allocated to accommodation & lodgements, stores and research centre.

Dietary supplementation with value addition: SIHP hope to transform raw into finish good, well packaged, branded and label with SIHP logo for preservations to generation unborn. Examples of the raw materials production of vegetables manufactured in tins readily available for consumption and exportation, fruits such as mangoes into jam, bananas into cake, tomato and pepper into paste, cassava and been into flavour milk power, maize into cornflakes and popcorns... etc

Economic & Culture: SIHP would have economically empower youth and women as targeted beneficiaries such that every young stars and women are capable of being successful self-reliance entrepreneurs, well educated both academically and professionally and will remain society change makers in reviewing, reviving cultural heritage with reduce crime, illegal or irregular migration and sustain SIHP as economic mainstay for African centre for Agric-&-Cultural research Centre.

Technology: SIHP envisage production and preservation of of its products under hygiene technology that can stand the test of time.

Policy: SIHP would have improved standard with international accredited policies sufficient to better the 2050 and beyond. Such policies would eradicate ignorance, unemployment, poverty as a cause and push factors to all youth led vices inimical to socioeconomic development in all spheres of human endeavours.
