Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.
We are Beekeepers from one of the most pure and remote places on earth - New Zealand. New Zealand has a total land area of 268,000 square kilometres (103,500 sq mi) and a population of 4.6million. New Zealand has just under 1 million bee colonies. The United States of America has a total land mass of 3,805,943.26 sq miles and a population of over 300 million. Yet Americas bee colonies are at just 2.8 million.
Not only is that an issue, Beekeepers worldwide and especially in America face the devastating effect of fake honey from China and other parts of the world. This has negatively affected the American beekeeper to the point that beekeeping to produce honey is no longer a financially viable model and have turned to pollination as the demand for pollination of the west coast of America has exploded.
To bring about perspective, just the USA almond industry requires 1 million bee colonies to pollinate the trees.That's over a third of all the bees in America and is more than the total number of bees in New Zealand. Simply put, there are not enough bees for the job required.
To compound this issue, from the perspective of American, New Zealand and other beekeepers; they fear that the long-term financial viability of beekeeping could be unsustainable, due to the current price of honey and thus, in turn could decrease the population of bees in general which would have an adverse effect on the food supply.
Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.
Honey bees provide essential pollination services to US fruit, vegetable and seed growers, adding $8-14 billion annually to farm income and ensuring a continuous supply of healthy and affordable foods for the consumer. About 2 million colonies are rented by growers each year to service over 90 crops. The almond crop alone requires 1.3 million colonies and is predicted to require 2.12 million by 2012 (about 95% of all colonies currently in the US). Increasing demand comes at a time when beekeepers are confronting the most serious challenges the industry has ever faced. A steady supply of healthy colonies remains cannot be guaranteed as parasitic mites and the rigors of migratory beekeeping continue to cause significant die-offs. A weakened beekeeping industry affects not only beekeepers, but also growers and consumers who pay higher prices for fewer goods. A weakened industry also contributes to social stress in rural America and increases our dependence on foreign sources of food. To ensure an adequate and sustainable supply of healthy honey bees, it is imperative that a new degree of cooperation be attained among researchers, beekeepers and growers, supported by elected and appointed government representatives.

For us, it’s about helping all Beekeepers worldwide, with focusing on America as the bee crisis is affecting the USA the most.
Bees and Beekeepers should not haveto only survive but they should be able to thrive.
Americas bee colonies are at just 2.8 million (2019)
The challenges that beekeepers face are the rates of growth and trend of foods that require pollination by bees (almonds,blueberries, cranberries etc). In addition, the pathergies, disease and management of the bees is underdeveloped and under supported. The bee industry in general is born out of hobbyists and has attempted to become commercialised, however the current models of commercialisation of beekeeping are not sustainable. This is a challenge for the industry.
Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.
Our vision addresses the above challenges in three ways;
Bee Wild. This addresses the challenges of bees not being treated like a commodity. Its focus is about allowing the bees to be as close to possible in their natural habitat and in locations where they will flourish.
Stay Pure. This addresses the challenges of beehive management,not using antibiotics, working together and sharing knowledge to solve and mange pathergies such as varroa mite in as eco-friendly way as we can.
Nourish Life. If we do the other two things, then we will have a natural output of nourished life for our bees and for our own lives’ as the food supply will be secure and our pollinators will be happy and healthy.
High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.
Beekeepers live for the artistry and passion of the bees. They truly are keepers of the bees. Their lives will be different as they will be able to enjoy the art of beekeeping knowing that there is support, places to go for help on managing beehive health and wellbeing. That society respects the bees to ensure they consume real honey. All providing sustainable beekeeping, being; financially, environmentally, bee health and wellbeing.
Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?
2050 would see exactly that. Nourish life.
Technology would be at the point that hives could be cost effectively remotely monitored, policies around the classification of what you can call honey would be in place to, protect the real honey from the fake honey. Culture would not be accepting of fake honey to protect the artistry of beekeeping.
Beekeeping would be a financially sustainable industry, honey would be pure, pollination for crops would be managed in a sustainable manner and threats to bee health would be eliminated or managed to a point that they no longer posed a threat to the bees.
All resulting in an abundance of food to nourish life.
The vision of the future would see; Passion and pride that drives a beekeeper to rise early to tend to their bees knowing that their artistry and age old tradition is benefiting society with products from the hive, pollination of foods and happy, healthy bees. Society and culture would hold the same understanding and value that pure honey is made with love and passion and should be enjoyed with the laughter and warmth of families at breakfast; with friends enjoying each others company on a cold winters day snuggled up with a hot cup of honey in tea; with restaurant owner's being proud to serve their patrons with whole food from the goodness of nature; with a mother being able to comfort her unwell child from nature and with people of all ages, backgrounds and cultures being able to enjoy the fruits of that early rising passionate beekeeper, in a way that's economically, environmental and socially sustainable.
