Lead Applicant Organization Type

  • Small company (under 50 employees)

Website of Legally Registered Entity

How long have you / your team been working on this Vision?

  • 1-3 years

Lead Applicant: In what city or town are you located?

Nairobi

Lead Applicant: In what country are you located?

Kenya

Your Selected Place: what’s the name of the Place you’re developing a Vision for?

Lake Naivasha basin in Kenya

What country is your selected Place located in?

Kenya

Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

I was born on the shores of Lake Naivasha in a farming community and I saw how year after year, it became harder to grow crops profitably and in a sustainable way due to climate change

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

Lake Naivasha is a fragile ecosystem with wildlife and water bodies as well as millions of smallholder farmers. To maintain the fragile ecosystem as well as promote the well-being of farmers new and sustainable ways of agriculture have to be championed including use of satellite imaging and drones to monitor farms and providing organic alternatives to chemical inputs

What is the approximate size of your Place, in square kilometers? (New question, not required)

2000

What is the estimated population (current 2020) in your Place?

2200000

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

Climate change is making it harder for farmers to grow crops profitably and in a sustainable way. Moreover, the Lake Naivasha basin is a fragile ecosystem with thousands of species of wildlife that require the ecosystem to survive. With over 2 million farmers living within the ecosystem, it is important to advance new ways and technology to make agriculture more sustainable and providing farmers and their families with safe and nutritious food.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

We use satellite imaging, drone imaging and ground based sensors to provide farmers with insights such as when to plant, when to irrigate and when to scout for pests and diseases. Our crop models enable farmers to apply fertilizer at variable rates reducing the overall usage of chemicals on the fragile ecosystem

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

People living around the lake ecosystem will be prosperous and happy. The soil, water and air will be clean. Farmers will have a good harvest without harming the environment which in turn will offer bio-diversity and diversified incomes through tourism.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

Using precision agriculture technology and soil regenerative techniques, farmers yield will increase without a negative impact on the environment. Demand for food in urban areas has seen farmers use more and more chemicals to the detriment of their soil, their health and to the detriment of the flora and fauna around them. Precision agriculture and organic farming reduces the need for farming with chemicals. With higher yields, farmers can sell surplus produce to urban markets and have income and improved livelihoods. This together with supportive economic policy will result in healthier and happier communities living in a clean and healthy environment.

Hi. I think drones could really change the food system. Do you think the farmers could also use the drones to transport their food? This might save them time, and reduce environmental impact of food transportation.
