Bristol County, MA has a total area of 691 square miles (1,790 km2), with 553 square miles of land and 138 square miles of water.

Bristol County has immense potential with our combination of a successful fishing port, food-oriented diversity with several dozen different nationalities represented in the region, resurgence of local farming, and strong commitment from local educational institutions to incorporate local foods into our students' diets. There is also a strong labor and human rights tradition dating back to the abolitionist movement that emphasizes the importance of quality of life.

With the incredible diversity in Bristol County, the food culture is incredible, especially with our rich connections with Portugal and Central and South America.

What is the estimated population (current 2020) in your Place?
Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.
While we live in a region of relative abundance, shifts in labor and technology have left the region behind the rest of the state when it comes to economic and educational success. We also have higher than state average rates of drug abuse, obesity, cardio vascular disease and diabetes. As a coastal region, we are also facing challenges related to global climate change.

Creating stronger community through food system linkages will be central to not just making our eating better, but helping our region thrive economically and educationally.
High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.
By 2050, food harvested from the sea and the land will be central to the region's economy, providing living wage jobs for the workers, better nutrition for our citizens, and drawing innovators and entrepreneurs to our region to enjoy the quality of life here.

Our vision links all participants in the food system, from workers to consumers, across both land and sea, with strong hubs through our educational systems, towards a shared connection around that which literally sustains us.
