Lead Applicant: In what country are you located?

The processing plant is based in Lusaka, Zambia and we have an outgrower scheme in Chipata, Zambia but we want to expand to Luapula, Zambia

Your Selected Place: what’s the name of the Place you’re developing a Vision for?

To operate in a catchment area of 11,000 Sq Km in Mwense district in Luapula province, Zambia due to good rains ideal for peanuts growing

What country is your selected Place located in?

Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

Luapula is in the region 3 which receives above 1,000mm of rains per annum. The soil is ideal for peanuts farming. The people have been growing peanuts for many years, there is adequate labour, experience and knowledge in peanuts farming. Aflatoxins prevailance is much lower in the soils of Luapula.

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

We have been operation in Zambia, a country with stable political system, good governance, stable economical policies, access to 8 neighbouring countries, reasonable communication channels and accessible roads.

People in Luapula now depend on peanuts as a major source of protein after the fish was depleted in the rivers. The major sample of carbohydrate is a thick porridge made from either cassava or maize. Luapula is in the region 3 which receives above 1,000mm of rains per annum. The main language of Luapula is bemba which is spoken in varous dialects. The lifestyle is predominantly rural based and nearly 90% depend of subsistance agriculture and the main produce is Cassava, maize and peanuts.

What is the estimated population (current 2020) in your Place?

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

The biggest challenge to food systems is climate change! This is affecting household level food security. Generally, at national level Zambia covered, the effected is diminished incomes from agriculture related incomes. Effects of stunt growth in children below the age of 5 years, as the case now in Zambia, 48% of the children below the age of 5 are suffering from severe acute malnutrition.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

The Peanut plants are relatively drought resistant and can be farmed without any fertiliser it be basal and top dressing because it can fix nitrogen on its own. Local farmers are given a headstart, peanuts doesnt need much automation nor much chemical application. Its a good source of protein for improved household nutrition.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

SHARE Africa Zambia has focused on food safety and nutrition. we fortify our peanu butter with micro nutrinuents as well Bio fortfication with Moringa powder.

We have formulated an instant cereal with maize and peanuts as a source of protein, all need is funding to get started.

The same formulation targets the most critical 1000 days.

We have plans to start RUFT ( ready-to-use therapuatic theraphy) which is peanut butter based for children who are stunted in growth. An administration of a 92gms satchet to a stunted growing child for 6 weeks will generally bring a child to good health.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

Peanuts are widely consumed in Zambia and Africa in general without any complication on allergies. Peanuts farmers have a radily available market for their produce, other benefits are their income is much better per season as compared to other crops grown in Zambia. Peanuts are enviromental friendly, no fertilizers needed which results in sustainability, there is alot improved seeds that are high yielding.

As an organisation we are peanuts focused and we shall continue in peanuts line for a long time. We grow certified peanuts seeds as well as we process peanuts grain for food value-addition.
