Lead Applicant: In what city or town are you located?
Ayeduase New Site, Kumasi
Lead Applicant: In what country are you located?
Your Selected Place: what’s the name of the Place you’re developing a Vision for?
Northern regions of Ghana ;Yendi (1446.3km^2), Wa(579.86km^2)
What country is your selected Place located in?
Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.
The Northern regions of the country have notable towns that have favorable conditions for the cultivation of cereals like rice, wheat, maize, soybean, and other food crops. Some of the towns include Yendi, Tolon, Wa and Savelugu. It is therefore common to record a large number of smallholder farmers within these places. However, unlike other large scale farmers that have agricultural machinery to aid their production, the farmers in these sectors have to resort to traditional methods of cereal production; cereal threshing to be specific.
After working for a year as an employee in one of the areas in these sectors, I acquired the first-hand experience of how these smallholder farmers face human drudgery after crop harvesting. Most often, children of school-going ages have to forfeit school to help relatives or guardians in the threshing of harvested cereal crops which is not only tiring but time-consuming as well as takes several hours to reach a neatly threshed cereal devoid of any impurities. This accounts for increased post-harvest losses.Health implications are also common to these smallholder farmers all because of this tedious method of threshing.
This boils down to explain the reason why these places have been selected all to provide agricultural machinery at a subsidized amount or in batter agreement to these farmers. This will not only stop the human drudgery but it increases the crop yield and see more children in schools just as they should.
Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.
The selected places of achieving this vision are located in the northern parts of the country with an estimated population of 5.4 million people. The areas have a low population density and this can be attributed to the case of emigration in the sense that these areas are farthest from the capital town of the country where there is easier accessibility to infrastructure and resources. The main economic activities are farming, hunting, and forestry. Together, they account for the employment of the economically active population, aged 15 years and older.
The Northern Region particularly is much drier than southern areas of Ghana, due to its proximity to the Sahel, and the Sahara with a majority of the inhabitants been agriculturalists specifically farmers. The vegetation consists predominantly of grassland Between January and March is the dry season. The wet season is between about July and December with an average annual rainfall of 750 to 1050 mm (30 to 40 inches). The highest temperatures are reached at the end of the dry season, the lowest in December and January.
In terms of their political administration, there are paramount chiefs that oversee the local affairs of the town. There are various indigenous languages spoken by the locals like Each dialect has a distinctive feature even though some similarities can be noticed.

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.
The old-fashioned method used by the local small holder farmers causes the low quality of food consumed. These farmers are known to be unschooled. The farming they carry out as an economic activity is normally a work passed on down by relatives hence it creates some sort of circle that never ends. The traditional method they use in cereal crop harvesting has resulted to human drudgery in farm operations, low scale production, food insecurity, post harvest loss and poor grain quality.
The manual threshing of cereals specifically soybean is done by a large number of labor force with sticks or by beating grain stalks on hard surfaces in order to pull it off. During harvesting seasons, children are obliged to stay out of school to help with the manual threshing. It requires more than enough energy of the farmers which is quite unfortunate and has caused human drudgery. Regardless of the efforts of these small scale farmers, the grains which come out as a result of manual threshing are normally of low quality and contain a lot of impurities. The grains are usually not as refined as the ones threshed by modern agricultural implements. This makes the grains less lucrative for the market and less appropriate for consumption. Then again, the manual threshing by the farmers leads to post harvest loss. They harvest enough cereal crops but then through their method of threshing ,most of the grains are not collected right. This makes it quite difficult to get favourable prices for their produce leading to financial instability. The ignorance of modern agricultural machinery application has also been a major challenge among these farmers.
Using the traditional method moving forward creates foreseen increased rate of human drudgery and health implication coupled with low productivity, financial instability and an impossibility of achieving a zero-hunger policy.
Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.
Our products are engineered to meet the African condition and well built to withstand pressures of the African farmer and Agricultural service providers. The multi-crop thresher which is our premier product is designed for more than one crop. With a single purchase, customers have a thresher for rice, maize, soybean, cow-pea, millet, sorghum, and bambara bean. This leads to increased productivity among farmers and high quality of grains. One unique feature of our product is that it comes with IoT, embedded GPS to smartphone monitors aided by a mobile app for smart control and tracking. The app helps to make real-time yield collection while threshing, links buyers to grain owners thereby bridging the market gap, aiding the block chain system, big data and others.
The thresher successfully separates grains from earheads, pods, and stalks of cereal and leguminous plants. It is 60 times faster than manual threshing, reduces post-harvest losses by up to 35% and increases farmers’ income by 50%. Hence, farmers record high crop yield and have the assurance of more refined grains without much labor consumption. This reduces the rate of human drudgery among these farmers. The number of people usually needed to carry out thee threshing phase thus reduces to enhance more work to be done. Particularly, children of school going ages do not have to forgo school during the harvesting seasons to help on the farms.
In the long-run, harvested crops are threshed to meet the market and general consumption requirement and farmers are been paid adequately for their produce which increases their financial stability and the drive to produce more cereal crops.
High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.
Eradicating the old-fashioned method used by the smallholder farmers will now see an improvement in the farm operations and consequently improve the standard of living. Using the multi-crop thresher which is our flagship product will see to the refinement of grains during the threshing phase of the crop.
The farmers without having to exert a lot of effort in threshing will now have high-quality grains free from contamination to present to the market for sale. This not only enhances value for their grains and increases their incomes but most importantly of providing high-quality grains for human consumption thereby improving diets.
Using the agricultural machinery will also attest to the level of agricultural machinery know-how of farmers in these areas and tend to bridge the gap between large scale farmers and the local smallholder farmers.
Children will not have to stay out of school to work on farms during harvest seasons. All the time and effort will be channeled to acquiring education to become leaders of change someday.
Farmers within these areas are not going to face the drudgery that comes with threshing the cereal crops after harvest and health implications are going to be reduced.
There will also be increased crop yields and productivity since the number of hours needed to complete a threshing phase by the hand beating method is greatly reduced all thanks to the multi-crop thresher. Because farming is one of the economic activities of the people, tackling the challenges bothering their operations will increase their drive to produce more and better still put smiles on their faces.
Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?
Our multi-crop thresher with gps tracking device
The threshing phase of cereal production done by children
Our vision seeks to have a place where farmers within rural localities are provided with agricultural machinery to assist in farm operations with the aim of putting a stop to the traditional method which causes low quality of grains, increase post-harvest loss, create unhealthy diet and other adverse problems. We seek to ensure the accessibility of agricultural machinery to these farmers by means possible.
With our vision, farmers would no longer have to beat harvested cereal crops on the bare ground with sticks as means of threshing which creates the platform for grain contamination. Rather than that, the multi-crop threshers would replace this tedious and unproductive method. Grains would be threshed to be of high quality and cases of aflatoxin would be minimal. People would now have nutritious cereal grains to consume thereby improving the general diet of the populace.
Threshing using the multi-crop thresher would create a serene environment for locals. The area of land used for the manual threshing would now be valuable for other beneficial activities .Beating the harvested cereals for long hours tends to increase air pollution. With our vision, this problem of air pollution would be curb when using our modernized designed machinery. In the long run, farmers are increasing productivity without endangering their health and environment.
Farmers using the thresher would record increased crop yield and high productivity. The farmers would now have to rely on the thresher to do the threshing which previously would have been done by 10-15 farmers with children inclusive. The thresher does so within couple of hours thereby encouraging the farmers to cultivate more cereals . Farmers would have an increase in land of The number of bags of grains collected increases and farmers are able to sell enough bags of grains for an income. Ideally, an increase in sale of grains leads to an increase in income. This goes a long way to improving the financial stability of farmers.
Children would not be deprived of a sound education because farmer parents and guardians would not prevent children from going to school in order to help with farm operations. There would be increase therefore be an increase in number of literates in the society to help in local and even national building.
Our multi-crop thresher which comes with the GPS-tracker will serve as a means of tracking the threshers. The gap between these local farmers and modern technology would be bridged in this situation. Farmers would be able to incorporate a form of technology in their activities regardless of been unschooled. Then again, a mobile application is in place which helps tell whether conditions within their regions and places of farming. This app run by employee operators also allows farmers list their bags of grains available to locate and get buyers for their grains in real time.
The thresher and other agricultural machinery come with smart monitor devices that will overtime measure the production of farmers. This gives information on productivity of farmers policy makers and all stakeholders involved which influences decisions to support farmers in operations in terms of fertilizers and subsidizes. We envision a large number of farmers using our threshers to consequently increase cereal cultivation because our system put in place to provide these farmers of relatively low incomes are flexible. We allow farmers have our threshers with part payment made and take the balance payment in forms of equivalent grains which are sold to get the money back.
Joining hands and receiving necessary supports goes a long way to dealing with the troublesome worries of food systems in our selected place to ensure effective and increase production of food while improving socio-economic conditions.
