Lead Applicant: In what city or town are you located?

Malang city, East Java

Lead Applicant: In what country are you located?

Your Selected Place: what’s the name of the Place you’re developing a Vision for?

East Java, the province in Indonesia that has area of 47,800 km^2.

What country is your selected Place located in?

Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

Beacuse i have been experienced about this area. I was born, stay, and study in a different city in East Java. I also know about mainly city in this area.

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

Mostly of east java area belongs to Java island. But it also has the other island such as Madura and bawean island. This area is surrounded by many mountains. There are about 65 mountains and 7 of them is volcano. The climate in east java is tropic which has two seasons they are rainy and dry season. The society in this area has a unique characteristic. Most of them use Indonesian and Javanese language. Population of east java in 2017 is about 39,29 million. The mainly people around here has a habit such as eat more carbohydrate than fiber. So, mainly of the farmer in this area is planting rice and corn. The agricultural commodity is the one of the most contributing sector in this area. Because the majority of the society is a farmer, and their income is considered as a low income. The rural society of this area has a problem such as low affordability of the access and has low-middle income.

What is the estimated population (current 2020) in your Place?

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

15% of the Indonesian populations live in east java. About 39.29 million people resided in this area. Population growth rate in Indonesia is about 2 million per year. So, for east java there will be population addition about 15% of 2 million or about 133,000 per year. There will be a high necessary of the food commodity. But, there is problem in food system in our region such as high chemical residue of the food, land degradation is spread every year, low production compared to the food demand, and the intensive food production will make worse environment and climate change. Mostly of them use synthetic fertilizer and pesticides to produce agriculture commodity. The organic farming implementation in this area is very rare. They don’t care too much on their health as long as they can eat. Their health awareness is very low. Besides that, the land in this area is converted into other function such as property, industry, infrastructure, etc. Besides that, the intensive food production will decrease tree population and reduce biodiversity which is affected on ecosystem and climate condition because the carbon storage in the earth is getting lower. So we have to do food production system that can overcome the problem above and can be a solution for the climate change. Besides that, this system should be an advantages and profitable for the local society.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

We know that the farmer income average in some region is considered as low-middle income. The price of the food and horticultural commodity is very fluctuating, that makes the farmers often get a low price and get disadvantages. We choose Moringa plant because this plant can save more carbon storage compared to other annual and perennial commodity. This plant just need very little cost because this plant is very resistant to the extreme climate condition such as less water area, unfertile land, and can grow even without fertilizer. Besides that, this plant also has very high economic benefit for the farmer because this leaf contains very high nutrition inside. This plant is considered as superfood or miracle plant by FAO. So this leaf has a high price that can increase farmers’ income. Usually, the farmer or communities don’t want to plant trees for better environment and climate because they will not get any economic benefit from it. According to, one of the methods to against climate change is making an incentive for the society to plant trees. Instead of making incentive for them, why don’t we make partnership with them to plant high economic tree commodity and the production will be bought by us with high price. It will make them interested to plant this tree because they get better income sustainably. According to, the most profitable farm made $275 per acre. But with this program, the farmer can get an income about $666 per month or about $8000 per annum with 3000 m2. It can be solution for rural farmers’ problem which their income is considered as low income, and can be solution to avoid price fluctuation of the agricultural commodity. It also can be solution for the environment and climate problem in the earth. Besides the nutritious food like moringa leaves, we also need the other food or horticultural commodity for food ingredients and seasoning such as rice, garlic, onion, chili, tomato, and many more. So, we have to plant other crop beside the Moringa plant in agroforestry system. We choose organic system because it can use the resource from organic waste and don’t need any synthetic fertilizer. So it will reduce organic and food waste because there are so many unused organic wastes produced every day in the world. The organic system also has a healthier product that can make better health for every human being. Healthy product from organic farming will make farmers’ income increased because it has very high price compared to the conventional product. Also, the organic system is considered as a sustainable farming system. We can produce healthy food and restore better climate at the same land. Then, it will be better because it is combined with the moringa trees in agroforestry system that makes it more sustainable. So we will be able to produce healthy food, make better climate condition, and increase society income at the same time.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

The society will get more income after implement this program. Because this plant just need very little cost and has a high price of this leaves. We have a role to collect fresh moringa leaves from the farmer and buy it with a high price. So, it will increase their income and shorten the supply chain. It will be better than present condition because nowadays the farmers' main problem is the price fluctuation, and the farmer income is considered as low. Besides that, it also make better climate condition compared to the conventional or general farming, because the general farming doesn't provide tree plantation that can support climate change from this carbon storage. It will convert full farming system into agroforestry which is more eco-friendly. Because the people nowadays will choose the farming system compared to plant the trees or make agroforestry system. Furthermore, it can change the society lifestyle to eat healthy food. This lifestyle can be a solution for human health and prosperity.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

This program will provide healthy food/horticultural commodity that is produced organically. Besides that, the moringa tree will provide high nutritious food that can complete human nutritions. It will also make better income for the farmer because they get price insurance from us. The agroforestry system will provide more food and also make a better climate and environment. Beacuse agroforestry provide more trees to restore environment and climate condition. This program can also be a solution for the reforestation.

This project is not only provides nutritious food for human. Its leaves have multifunction for food availability as human food, animal feed, and crop production. It provides high nutritious feed for livestock, poultry, and fisheries production. Because the animal production can grow optimally when they get enough nutrition. It can be a solution for animal feed cost. Its leaves can also be used as organic fertilizer for crop production. Then, it can enhance food and horticulture commodity without using chemical fertilizer. Besides that, it also can be a solution for contaminated food. The food which is contaminated by heavy metal like seafood can be neutralized by its leaves and seed.

If this project is implemented in my area, it will provide enough food for the area that i have chosen. This project is not hard enough to be implemented because this tree commodity is very easy to grow with less treatment and can produce leaves optimally for food necessary.
