I was born here in Kaduna state and I have vactually lived here all my life and I have a very strong affinity with this community . Ahmadu Bello University: The first University established in the Northern Nigeria. Till date, it remains one of the best Universities in Africa is a very prestigious institution where I graduated . my connection with Kaduna stems from the rich cultural heritage evidence in her diverse religious ,festivities, value and the flavorful foods.
I believe in the community and I desire to contribute to help build it, I envision a better environment in Kaduna where communities can have a better health, wellness with a transformative food system solution that will contribute to protecting and regenerating the environment, nourishing the body of the people. A food system that serves as a catalyst leading to creativity, while galvanizing multi-stakeholders, key partners and leveraging their various wealth of knowledge and resources through an interconnected food system; Thereby bring about a positive future for all . By developing new ways of thinking and work through innovative game changing approach that is both desirable, sustainable and socially compelling.
The aim is to bring about a positive shift in the food system of my community with a transformative potential to the structure and norms as it is today by taking it out of the current state and lunch it into a new reality.
CURRENT SITUATION :
Poverty alleviation/eradication, control of the factors creating over-urbanization, and sustainable food production are among the top priorities of the kaduna government and most international organizations concerned with the economic welfare of the world. Local aggravating factors that require attention to assist in rebalancing these factors include:
- Utilization of arable land for housing and urban expansion reducing the amount of land available for traditional farming activities.

KADUNA STATE is a popular city in the north-central geopolitical zone of Nigeria with the capital also known as Kaduna. It was created in 1976 out of the old Northern Region of Nigeria. The state derived its name from KADA, which is Hausa word that means crocodile – kaduna is a plural word for KADA. The presence of crocodiles in the river gave birth to the name, ‘River Kaduna’ from which the state derives its moniker. The state has recorded continuous growth to the level of being the commercial hub of northern Nigeria. The major occupation is agriculture, comprising crop production ,fishery and animal husbandry.
Although Katsina state was carved out of Kaduna state in 1987 there are still many ethnic groups in Kaduna, but the major ones are Hausa, Fulani, Jaba, Gbagyi, Bajju, Adara, Kadara, Kagoma, Kurama, Gwong, Gure, Numana, Atyap, Moro’a, Kaninkon, Koro , Ninzo, Kagoro and Ham. The state shares boundaries with Katsina, Zamfara, Kano, Bauchi, Plateau, Niger states and the Federal capital Territory, Abuja.
The people of Kaduna are hospitable and accommodating and its topology, noted for tourism which is evident in its cultural festivals and many tourist attractions that abound in the state. The notable among the festivals are the following:
Kaduna State Festival of Arts and Culture: This is an annual festival organized by the State Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The festival serves as an avenue for the twenty three local government areas that make up the state to come together and showcase their culture, talents and skills. The festival breeds unity among the different ethnic groups in the state.
Durbar Festival: This is an annual festival that takes place during sallah. Men are seen in beautiful garment and regalia. The festival features horse-riding, religious and cultural displays among others. It brings together thousands of people in very happy mood.
In Kaduna 6 out 10 people makes their living out of farming or fishing business activities, important to note is that there is a national policy the modernization of agricultural innovation, while the Government is also virgoriously advocating agricultural diversification for sustainable food system that would boost the economy and also creates jobs and generate employment for the teaming unemployed.
It is imperative to state that the average income of Kaduna farmers has increased 30% between 2007-2018.largely due to improved seed, efficiency, Government support policies, although innovations in some key areas such as technology, processing, storage, distribution and transportation are yet to be wide-scale.
Kaduna also have a flavourful expressions of legumes, vegetables, fruits, whole grains,herbs for food seasoning and spices are in abundant fish is a major delicacie enjoyed by the people, and meats such as children and pork.
Kaduna as a hub for technology innovation, seeks to create stronger ties between traditional farming, culinary traditions, and research development effort for a better future for food system .

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.
Everyday, someone in the world provides a new innovation, taking the developed and developing world to the next level of advanced living. While we are making modern task more advanced and simpler for average user, several necessities in life, such as Food, water, and shelter, remains to be an epic concern for both developed and developing societies.
For instance in my region Kaduna state in particular food shortage and food insecurity are a peresisting problem. With rapid population growth. This region faces the issue of not having the proper resources to provide the communities a sufficient quality of food, the farming techniques present in the region are not modernized to combat climate changes that have occurred over the years, inefficient farming techniques have limited the potential amount of produce available for the region. From this delima, several individuals across the region face several health concerns and growth impediment. According to the WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION the number of children in Africa that experienced "stunting" due to malnutrition grew by 8.1 million from 2000 to 2016. This is only one of the several concerns raising from food insecurity.
With the gravity of this challenges, some countries must rely on outsider resources to reduce the delima; however, several engineers dealing with sustainable farming could provide a solution that improves farming infrastructure within our communities .
The rapid pace of urbanization has dramatically shifted how we approach food system globally. In the 1900,only 2 % of the world's population lived in urban areas. But today, it is over half of the global population, and over the next 30 years that population is expected to increase to about two thirds,while cities offer great potentials for economic, culture, and societal development, cities in particular face a host of challenges, in sustainably feeding their communities, including lengthy supply chains, inadequate infrastructure and waste management system and less opportunities for households to produce their own food ; and less opportunities for women and youth.
Apparently, by 2050,global food system will need to sustainably and nutriciously feed nearly 20 billion and 80% of the world's food will be consumed within the urban areas. Therefore, the challenge to ensure that everyone in the world can feed themselves has become intertwined with concerns around which food are we consuming, where are we eating them, and how are they grown, processed, and delivered.
More so, As food system contributes to the increasing incidences of non-communicable and food borne diseases and represents one of the world's largest employer and primary drivers of climate change. These issues have far reaching consequences on peoples nutrition and health. The potential, to create viable jobs and livelihoods, and the sustainability of our planet.

Our vision is motivated by the need for sustainable organic agriculture and producing food close to urban centers, using aquaponics farming methods this new innovative approach to healthy food will provide equitable and affordable access to healthier, low carbon food in cities, reduce hunger, malnutrition, and food related illnesses, in urban areas; create more efficient supply chains and reduce food loss and waste. It will also promote and support productive economic activities- creation of decent job opportunities and encourage the youth towards creative and innovative new approach in sustainable agricultural farming through aquaponics. Furthermore, it will provide a testing ground for urban food production in Kaduna to promote and educate about urban food production, our greenhouse will be used to grow seedlings that locals communities can grow and will also be capable of growing fresh fish and fresh vegetables.it will be set up so it can provide educational experience for local communities, youth and women and interested community members wishing to learn about aquaponics food production as well as about worker cooperative business.
Sustainable farming can bring forth several positive impact on the environment and economic while, providing efferent alternatives to traditional forms of farming. Aquaponics farming system fall under the umbrella of sustainable farming because the system's goal is exactly that: to use the minimum amount of water necessary, provide a reliable source of food and income, and create the ability for future generations to thrive. With that in mind,
Aquaponics is a sustainable method of raising both fish and vegetables. With this type of farming, we can grow substantially more food with less water, and labour than traditional agriculture. It is a resilient farming system that provides wellness and better nutrition. The project combines raising fish in tanks (recirculating agriculture) with soiless plant culture (hydroponics). In which the nutrients -rich water from raising fish providers a natural fertilizer for the plants and the plants helps to purify the water for the fish.
High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.
The vision will bring about a resilient food system and a regenerative agriculture that will evolve communities around it and build a firm and stable economy for Kaduna state.
It will connect and bring synergy between stakeholders to a new source of fresh healthy local food that is free of impurities, grown in the community and easily accessed.
There will be sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth in food system, full productive employment and decent jobs in the community.
The solution will eliminate food deserts and food insecurity, while contributing to high quality neighborhoods able to meet their healthy and nutritious needs.
One advantage of using aquaponics as a sustainable alternative to traditional farming is its ability to positively impact communities economically,technologically,culturally, environmentally and other wise.
Besides aquaponics being a more reliable system of farming that ensures year-round productivity and optimization of natural resources, aquaponic systems can also aid poorer communities that rely upon food imports to provides essential resources to their citizens.
Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?
It will serve as a means of community empowerment and agribusiness development that will help to shape the life of our community and all stakeholders in the agricultural value chain with the adoption of the aquaponics technology as a beneficial food system for the future.
This food system is sustainable because of its potential to empower the community, provide equitable access, and connects to build social resilience and support their economic situation. Talking about economic is not just about the economy, it also means we can create a local food system that provides personal economic value to the communities.
The project serves as a training and vocational center to train community women farmers, youths, graduates, student and interested community members wishing to learn about aquaponics farming system ,leading to the promotion of aquaponics concept as a sustainable organic food system for the future as a pathway to solving food insecurity, poverty, hunger, malnutrition and unemployment in our community.
There will be access to equitable and affordable distribution of fresh organic food for all such as fresh fruit, fish, vegetable, herbs, quality -breed of fingerling and vegetables seedlings through a credit scheme to help farmers in the community thereby encouraging productivity and sustainability for our food system.
Water conservation -Aquaponics uses 90% less water than traditional farming methods, water and nutrients are recycled in closed -loop fashion which conserve water for the people, the system also protect rivers and lakes from harmful fertilizer run off into the shed. In effort to maintain nutrient rich soil, farms have to use a lot of fertilizers which eventually make it to the rivers , where there are countless harmful side effects .
Gas conservation : "FOOD MILES" will be greatly reduced and our produce will only travels less than five miles from farm to consumers. Only serving the local communities and reduce harmful gas emissions.
Land conservation : our system grows six times more than per square foot than traditional farming. Also, by growing in abandoned warehouse, we are using structures that already exist thereby saving money, energy and other valuable resource, while creating synergy between the farm location, mobility and food production network and levels of biodiversity so as to adopt a zero-waste approach.
Energy conservation : even with grow light, we use less energy than conventional commercial farming! Because all energy used in aquaponics is electrical, so alternate energy system such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric can be used to power our farms.
Kaduna state is very rich in cultural diversity with about 59 different tribes and languages with rich expressions of festivals all connected by food and traditions. Culture and tradition is deeply rooted in the way we approach food system, food is like a tradition that connects and bring the high and low together and express through the diverse food of which fresh fish, vegetables, herbs and spices are indispensable in our culinary arts and diets and aquaponics is like a signature food solution that will cause a major shift in the community.
Kaduna are becoming increasingly concerned with how food relates to the urban environment and are encouraging the development of sustainable food system that contributes to high -quality neighborhoods, meet health and nutrious need of the community, and promote environmental sustainability. As access to fresh, healthy ,and affordable food is a fundermental requirement for healthy living.
More so, as of 20014 in Kaduna 39.8% of low income households and 15.4% of all households were considered "food insecured " meaning they did not have access to enough food for " active healthy living. Many low access urban areas families are limited in what they can buy to what is within walking distance, this restrictions on food can create food decert - area without access to fresh, healthy and affordable food, the only have fast food restaurants and convenience store, which leads to health problems in the community.
Therefore, we can build a food solution fit for local market demand, stakeholders needs, sustainable, maximize food production and enables education.
In our vision solution fertilizer is from cold blooded fish which does not carry the E. Loki or salmonella, unlike fertilizer from from warm-blooded animals. As fish are the fastest converter of plant protein to animal protein, fish have no growth hormones, no mercury, no antibiotics, and our plants have no antibiotics, produces taste better than that purchased at the grocery store because it is not shipped and stored for extended period of time.
TECHNOLOGY:With this farming technique farmers will be able to grow six times more per secure foot than traditional farming with proprietary system, because the system recycles the water in the system, we can grow in droughts and areas with little water as aquaponics uses 90% less water than traditional farming methods; with our system farmers will have less pest to deal with, need no weeding to contend with and plants will grow twice faster due to the naturally fortified water from the fish
Kaduna as an agriaran state has strong policies and legislation on agriculture for transformation and also key policies for success by the ministry of Agriculture such as fiscal policies,domestic content for food (enabling legislation), industry policies, financial services policies and agricultural policies.
imagine a policy that can galvanized 230,000 community members to engage and actively participate in developing a local food system that contributes to high quality neighborhoods to meet healthy and nutritious needs of the residents and promote environmental sustainability, as food system and the amount of food waste generated is borne by many stakeholders, companies, producers, consumers and government.
Imagine again the impact pathways and outcome that would be achieved with a policy that brings all stakeholders together in a coordinated effort.
