Nairobi is important because it houses more than 4 million people from all over the country. With this population, there are challenges such as pollution and congestion that eventually affects the food supply and consumption.
The slums in the area, for instance, Kibera, Mathare, etc houses large number of people with low income resulting in increased poverty. The people living in these slums cannot acquire safe food hence poor diet. A lot of food consumed in Nairobi comes from neighboring counties such as Kiambu, Kajiado, which is not enough to feed the growing population.
The area is of great importance to us since it is our permanent area of residence. As members of the area, we know the challenges facing our people hence the need to address the situation to make it better for all of us.

Nairobi is a very ethnically diverse city, and Kenya’s major ethnic groups all reside here, including Luo, Luhyia and Kamba. There are also many Asians, Europeans, and Somalis that call this city home. A large number of expatriates live here because of the job opportunities, which has led to the city’s explosive growth.

Located in between Kampala and Mombasa, Nairobi stretches itself across 684 square kilometers of land. It lies adjacent to the eastern edge of the rift valley and is situated 5450 ft (1661 meters) above the sea level. The Ngong hills occupy the western part of the city. Mount Kenya is located to the North of the city and Mount Kilimanjaro lies towards south-east of Nairobi. Placed on a high altitude, Nairobi experiences a moderate climate with sunny summers and cool winters. The city is pretty warm between December and March, while in June and July the temperatures drop down leading towards chilled evenings. Rainfall is moderate. The drizzles are enjoyed in between late summer and autumn.
This city is usually a platform to showcase the latest trends of clothing, bags, jewelry, accessories, makeup, hair and beauty products, homes and other products. On a weekend in Nairobi, this market gives you the opportunity to shop for good quality products, as you sample what’s trending in the Kenyan fashion scene as you enjoy the sights sounds and beautiful people of Nairobi. Everything is displayed with that perfect touch of class because there is a story behind it. More people move from rural areas to Nairobi in search of jobs.
Agriculture has been the sole provider for food that feeds the whole population since the staple food in Nairobi is 'ugali'. The residents here hope to access safe, reliable, affordable and sustainable food supply. Due to poor diet, the people are exposed to dietary diseases such as marasmus in children and obesity.

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.
Increased disease and pest incidences, making farmers use large volumes of chemicals. The traces of chemicals end up in the food we consume, thereby compromising our health.
Increased production on garbage sites and sewage lines due to scarcity of arable lands, resulting from real estate construction on arable land. This has resulted in the production of contaminated food.
Production of insufficient food, leading to the importation of cheap and harmful food products from other countries. This interferes with the market for locally produced food products.
Climate change has resulted in unpredictable and unreliable weather patterns, causing low production of food since the farmers are dependant on rainfed agriculture.
Poor harvesting techniques and lack of knowledge on maturity index, making farmers harvest immature products. This affects the quality, quantity, and shelf-life of the products.
Poor handling and storage techniques causing accumulation of toxic substances that are unfit for human consumption.
Poor diet due to food inaccessibility, unreliability, unaffordability, and unsustainability. This results in dietary problems.
Ignorance about the kind of food to eat and what a balanced diet is.
Under-diversification and under-utilization of food resources.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.
Our vision will address the challenges in the following thematic areas;
Planting of trees, not only ornamental but also fruit trees to supply fruits that completes our diet. It will also reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to release much stress on the ozone layer.
Use of drought and disease-resistant varieties to cope up with climatic changes and reduce the use of chemicals that are hazardous to our health.
Organic farming helps us produce safe food free from toxins.
Adoption of solar energy other than biofuels which pollute the environment.
Rooftop and vertical gardening will help solve the problem of insufficient land for production.
Use of fish farm tanks hanged in between flats to solve the problem of limited land for pond construction and insufficient animal protein for our diet.
Adoption of an online marketing platform for foodstuff, that will ensure every individual is able to sell and buy food with ease.
Adoption of the hematic bag in the storage of cereals. This bag has a layer of moisture and pest-proof materials the will keep our cereal safe and free from aflatoxins.
Value chain addition. During peak periods the excess foods can be processed and stored for future use and this will increase and diversify our consumption.
Adoption of formers cooperatives to help them sell their produce, process and store the excess and ensure cleanliness in food handling.
Educating people not only to depend on their cultural type of foods but also accept other foods and be ready to incoperate in their diet.
Diversification of foods. People to move from other alternative sources of nutrients apart from one to solve the problem of malnutrition and dietary-related diseases.
Sensitization on the importance of a balanced diet and food handling for us to achieve the food to be the medication in our body system.
Fortifying our food products this will enable individuals to access a feed with al the nutrients need at ease and cheaply.
Revisiting food policy and implementing them to ensure good hygiene for food sellers and proper handling of our food hence access to safe food.
Revisit land-use policies will make land meant for agriculture not to be used for construction and cultivation along sewages in line with the use of sewer water for irrigation be stopped.
Environmental policies are revisited to ensure those polluting our environment to pay for what they release in the environment hence protecting our environment creating a favourable climate for agriculture.

By 2050, our people will be able to access safe, reliable, affordable and sustainable food products locally produced by our people.
By 2050, our people will have the knowledge and be able to eat a balanced diet.

By 2050, we will be able to have a good marketing system to avoid loss through food spoilage.
By 2050, our people will have a variety of food products which are not only safe but also provide medicinal impacts in their lives.
