ADDIS ABABA CITY,covers an area of 526.99 km^2. Shewa zone, covers an area of 40,000.45 km^2. Arsi zone,covers an area of 19,825.22 km^2.

Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

Addis Ababa is the place i am living in now. shewa zone is the area surrounding the city i am currently living in. The other is the place my father had lived in and has a farming land.

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

Addis Ababa is the capital city of Ethiopia. Shewa zone is the area surrounding the city Addis Ababa. These areas are currently highly dense in population and has a lot of demand in food and other facilities. The area's supplies its food demand from neighboring cities. The main type of dish in the area are poultry products and vegetables. Some part of the area has an aqua-cultural food culture. The area is highly urbanized and becoming dense in population. Mainly the oromo people live in the area. The languages mainly spoken in the area are Oromifa and Amharic. There is highly increasing unemployment rate in these areas. The hope of the people in the area is mainly on agriculture but the old trend of agriculture can't sustain the current increasing population in the area. there are mixed ethnic groups living in the area. In this area, the climate is warm and temperate. The summers are much rainier than the winters in Addis Abeba and shewa. The average annual temperature in the area is 16.3 °C. Precipitation here averages 1143 mm.

What is the estimated population (current 2020) in your Place?


Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

Currently there is a high demand of food in the area to feed the dense population. Still now the area can't insure the food security of the people. The current farming system is old and can't supply the demanded amount of food. The demand of food cause the price of food to be higher and the community in low and middle status can't afford to get proper and enough food. As a country, Ethiopia imports 8.4% of the total demand even-though there is a potential to supply to other countries.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

We need to produce a high amount of food to feed the population in the area. But the old system of farming can't help the current population and the increasing population. So, our company design a system that can be implemented anywhere in the country without considering environmental factors like temperature, humidity and others. The system basically combines 4 types of farming to make it sustainable and reduce the production cost of the products. The types of farming which are combined are poultry, horticulture, aqua-culture and insect farming. This will reduce the production cost by 40% and uses less water than the conventional ways of farming and the environment of the system is automatically controlled. The system works by supplementing each other. The food demand for the chickens and fishes come from insect farming which are high in protein. The west of the chickens is used to grow the insects and the remaining will be used as a source of fertilizer together with waste of the fishes to grow vegetables. The system is implemented in a greenhouse starting from 100 m^2 and can be scale able up-to the demand. Our company is planning to implement this system up to 100 places in the next 5 years. By doing this we can fight the food insecurity we are facing now.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

The basic thing is we are planning to do is insuring food security of the area. We will produces high amount of food products in the area and sell it to the market with affordable price. The other thing is the people in the area will get employment opportunity which will challenge the current unemployment problem. The other thing that will be done by our company is giving training for the youth for free to engage in the same field of work in order to face the problem of our country and continent which is food insecurity.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

The system basically don't depend on soil or environmental factors. It also don't have a negative environmental factor to the surrounding. The environment is controlled so the food produced is highly organic for the people consuming it. The system will reduce the amount of food imported to the country by supplying the demand within. The system uses temperature and humidity controlling technologies which are not new. Our company is partner with institution which are working in the food sector. The adaptability of the system makes it to be implemented anywhere in the country.

Way to go. Insect as source of protein for animal feed on a commercial scale is new and seemingly the next best action to avert environmentally challenges in the future due the growth in demand for meat and meat products.
