How long have you / your team been working on this Vision?

  • Under 1 year

Lead Applicant: In what city or town are you located?

Lead Applicant: In what country are you located?

Your Selected Place: what’s the name of the Place you’re developing a Vision for?

What country is your selected Place located in?

Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

I have lived here all my life.

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

Montreal is a huge city and has a lot of potential when it comes to food and sustainable food initiatives. I plan to make this city carbon neutral with the project.

What is the estimated population (current 2020) in your Place?

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

Food waste and waste in general are causing Montreal to be a city where so much of the potential it could have as green city to be lost. If all the packages where made out of hemp there would be less waste , with hemp there ar eso many healthy benefits that all Montrealers could benefit from. Montreal is a city with more than 3000 restaurants and if every single waste food everyday , it is devastating to our ecosystem. Not just restaurants but groceries , cafes and all establishments where food is transformed or produced there is waste. Since no restaurants reslly compost there waste , the food ends up in landfull , where it does not decompose properly.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

My vision is that all restaurants be zero-waste with the help of composting being implemented and hemp packaging being created. This will drastically reduce waste on both levels and will do wonders for the earth . Also starting to educate restaurant owners about food waste and waste in general will make sure everyone is one the same page with it comes to environmental pratices

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

People in Montreal are worried , worried about climate change. The place and lives of the people of Montreal will be different because they will be living in a city with no waste and havinh less waste means the places where the food grows and the animals live will be cleaner. People will be proud to live in a city where change is happening and ecological measures are being applied.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

With hemp being used for the packaging that is being thrown away right now , it will make wonders for the environment since hemp us non-pollutant and is a sustainable resource. The fact that the packaging is made with hemp makes it easier for it to be disposed of and with less tress being cut down and more hemp being cut down . This will give a chance to animals living the forest to live freely and not be destroyed by deforestation. Hemp will also boost the economy due to its high value , it can be used to do anything really . It is a super plant and have nothing but good and aiding benefits to our earth. If we don’t save the earth who will ? I believe it is time for a change and hemp is the change we have been waiting for . No more fossil fuels ! On biofuels and biofuel made of hemp . No more single use plastic ! Plastic made from hemp ! No more deforestation, hemp wood is light and stronger than real wood! There are so many reasons to make the switch with hemp . I believe we can save the world from starvation and malnutrition , by using the right ressources that are sustainable . In conclusion , our earth and ecosystems are collapsing more and more everyday , let’s make a change for once , let’s do the right thing and start exploiting hemp once and for all ! Thank you

Nicolas Fortin We love hemp for a bunch of reasons too, because it kills it with our 1 reason rule. (never do anything for one reason) It can grow on marginal land, and has the ability to suck decades of bad things from the soil in a single season. If the plants are contaminated, they can still be useful for industrial (non food applications). in on plant we can use seeds for food, fibre for many applications and same for the cores. James Irwin is the CEO of Point 3 Biotech, and is doing some fantastic work in extractions. Our submission will include a substantial body of work on Hemp, and will be able to share analytics with you. We are happy to help in any way we can.

Hi Nicolas Fortin  Welcome to the Prize Community!
It is fascinating to see a Vision developing for reducing waste and improving composting and organic culture, all of this through the use of one wonder material of hemp.
How might you evolve your Vision to make it more inclusive and systemic for Montreal's local food system and its numerous stakeholders? How can you consider the economy, environment, diets etc. to detail out your Vision further? You can find some guiding principles on Systems Thinking and inspiration in the Vision Prize Toolkit in Chapter 3 under Tools of Transformation.
Here's the link to the Prize Toolkit:

Look forward to seeing your Vision evolve in the coming weeks.
