Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

Oyo State is a predominantly agrarian state with lots of natural resources for agriculture. There are large expanses of virgin land that are affordable to acquire or lease to create a farming community of 3000 and above hectares of land.

My company operates from Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State. Ibadan is approximately 100kilometres from Iseyin. Iseyin has adequate affordable landmass to set up farm communities being sparsely populated.

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

Oyo State is an inland state in south-western Nigeria. It covers approximately an area of 28,454 square kilometer. The landscape consists of old hard rocks and dome shaped hills, which rise gently from about 500 meters in the southern part and reaching a height of about 1,219 metre above sea level in the northern part. Some principal rivers such as Ogun, Oba, Oyan, Otin, Ofiki, Sasa, Oni, Erinle and Osun river originate in this highland.

The Climate is equatorial, notably with dry and wet seasons with relatively high humidity. The dry season lasts from November to March while the wet season starts from April and ends in October. Average daily temperature ranges between 25 °C (77.0 °F) and 35 °C (95.0 °F), almost throughout the year.

The State which is homogeneous, has a population of about 6million and is predominantly occupied by the Yoruba people. Within the State however, there are sub-ethnic groups with distinct dialect peculiarities. The people of Oyo State may be divided into five broad groups which are: the Ibadans, the Ibarapas, the Oyos, the Oke-Oguns and the Ogbomosos.

Agriculture is the main occupation of the people of Oyo State. The climate in the state favours the cultivation of crops like maize, yam, cassava, millet, rice, plantains, cocoa, palm produce, cashew etc. There are a number of government farm settlements in Ipapo, Ilora, Eruwa, Ogbomosho, Iresaadu, Ijaiye, Akufo and Lalupon. There is abundance of clay, kaolin and aquamarine. There are also vast cattle ranches at Saki, Fasola and Ibadan, a dairy farm at Monatan in Ibadan and the statewide Oyo State Agricultural Development Programme with headquarters at Saki. A number of international and federal agricultural establishment are located in the state.

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

The current challenges are absence of an enabling environment to encourage young people invest and sustain their livelihood in agriculture. 

1. The present culture does not give room for large scale production of food due to issues with land ownership and tenure system for individuals.

2. Absence of appropriate technology for sustainable farming has led to lots of environmental related problems with farming whereby deforestation is on the high side with resulting low soil fertility. In addition, chemical use has been rampant and abused affecting the soil and water system for agricultural production.

3. Agriculture is largely dependent on weather condition thus limiting access to nourishing diets during off seasons as appropriate technology and amenities to utilize available technology to convert produce to products is grossly lacking.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

Creating new farming communities of an average land size of 1000 hectares will provide the right environment to accommodate and sustain a minimum of 220 farming families and 200 non farming families within each farm community.

Each farm community is expected to have basic infrastructures and amenities to cater for the families within the farm community. Such facilities includes: accommodations, farmlands, schools, processing centres, security, recreational centres, marketplace (general merchandise), mechanical workshops etc.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

1. Increase in Farm productivity.

2. Cultivation of tree crops in over 100 hectares of land for each farm community.

3. Improved standard of living in terms of per capita income, diet and education.

4. Mitigation of rural - urban migration through developed rural farming communities.

5. Establishment of industries close to farming communities to offtake raw materials from the farm.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

Creating a new farming communities that is self sufficient will encourage existing farm communities to restructure itself to promote development.

Over the years, the neglect of rural farming communities have created a culture of apathy, disenchantment, distrust and poverty. These and more factors had led to massive migration of youths from rural communities to urban centres in search of white collar jobs.

With fewer and fewer young people in agriculture, food security is threatened.

The drive by the federal and state governments in Nigeria to make agriculture a worthwhile enterprise can only be achieved when new communities are created with the right principles and people. 

Our people believe in what they can see and only when it has been proven to work will they put in their effort.

With new farm communities actively engaged in making their livelihood from farming and related activities, food security is assured by 2050. Environmental degradation is curtail through systemic and eco friendly farm activities that converts waste to wealth. The stander of living is raised to above $100 per day. The people drive favorable policies and help creat e a sustainable community for growth and development.
