If part of a multi-stakeholder entity (i.e. team), provide the names of other organizations and types of stakeholders collaborating with you.

Herenboeren Nederland is (at this moment) a foundation that assists groups of Dutch consumers to start and run their own sustainable cooperative farm. In 2020 Herenboeren Nederland wil become a 'cooperative of the cooperatives', a democratic organisation that is directly connected to the Communities around the country. Some of our partners are mentioned at

How long have you / your team been working on this Vision?

  • 3-10 years

Lead Applicant: In what city or town are you located?

Lead Applicant: In what country are you located?

The Netherlands

Your Selected Place: what’s the name of the Place you’re developing a Vision for?

We developed our vision for The Netherlands, a densely populated country of just over 40,000 km2, inhabited by 18 million people

What country is your selected Place located in?

The Netherlands

Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

The Netherlands are a densely populated country in Europe, probably the most intensively farmed country of the world. Although the Dutch farmers are world champion in high outputs per km2, the system they work in is cracking. Biodiversity is tumbling down, so is e.g. the quality of the soil end the average farmers income. Many farmers are competing in a race to the bottom, in a market that is orchestered by a few huge retail companies and the world market.

For years Dutch farmers organisations have been searching for ways to improve the well being of the farmers. But the challenges (according to e.g. environmental problems, climate change etcetra) remain big, and the number is growing. The amount of farmers is reduced to about 50,000, the size, intensity and impact of their farm has gone up.

Although some of these 50,000 farmers feel happy with this situation, a vast majority is struggling with the future of their (family)farm. And more and more of the 18 million consumers, demand a more sustainable way of food production.

Herenboeren is enrolling our vision of Farming Communities in The Netherlands first, because the inventors of this new system live here. But it is interesting too, starting in The Netherlands, because we think that if it works here, it might work in every other country.

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

Most information is written at our Perspective Farming Communities:

What is the approximate size of your Place, in square kilometers? (New question, not required)

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

Most information is written at our Perspective Farming Communities:

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

Most information is written at our Perspective Farming Communities:

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

If people are directly connected to their food, their farmer, the soil the food is being produced, you wil automatically get the most sustainable way of food production. If you bring the Farming Communities together at / around their farm, lots of social benefits will ocur.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?
