Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.
We are able to gain market access into these locations due to having a base in Singapore, other countries are within close proximity.
USA because we have a strong network from our 500 Startups accelerator programme.
Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.
People today are currently consuming the few main livestock: beef, chicken, pork and lamb. The farming and processing of these livestock is regarded as archaic and highly unsustainable requiring vast amount of resources such as feed, land and water. This is becoming a major problem for a fast-growing global population.
It is also found that red meats contain a high level of carcinogen linked to cancer. Our meat today contains a high level of steroids and antibiotics (95% of total antibiotic sales in USA goes towards livestock).
With all these factors, consumers are increasingly looking towards alternative and more natural protein sources such as plant based, insect and cell based diets.
ento offers insect based protein as a highly natural, nutritious and sustainable form of protein for the future.
Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.
10 billion people in the world by 2050.
We need to increase our current food production by 70%.
Demand for alternative food sources is growing. Consumers are increasingly looking towards more nutritious and sustainable form of food in response to climate change. Plant based protein has been huge but a lot of plant based products are highly processed. ento is looking to offer all-natural protein products for our consumers in burger patty, granola and other forms.
Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.
When more people consume ento products, we are diverting resources away from traditional livestock. Farming ento products require 12x less feed, 20x less land, 2000x less water and 100x less greenhouse gases compared to beef production.
High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.
When people are able to adopt ento products as a mainstream food source, we will ultimately require less resources to feed our fast-growing global population. This means, less land deforested, less water wasted, less land required to grow feed, less carbon emissions.
In the whole, our food production will be a lot more efficient.
Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?
My Vision will encapsulate all the six themes mentioned through a better use of our resources to produce a more nutritious and sustainable output.
Consumers are currently relying on an archaic food system where we utilise our resources inefficiently with added harmful substances such as steroids and antibiotics.
I believe that the diet of today is largely influenced by brilliant marketing. ento aims to educate consumers to make a fundamental shift in our diets much like what the lobsters have done in 18th century USA, or sashimi in 1980s USA.
