Your Selected Place: what’s the name of the Place you’re developing a Vision for?
Los Nevados covers an area of 126 km 2
What country is your selected Place located in?
Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.
Los Nevados is a touristic and agricultural area, located very close to Merida. It is very productive and environmentally sensitive.
Currently it has been heavily intervened by uncontrolled agricultural practices, which have deteriorated Paramo ecosystems, which will be hard to recover.
Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.
Los Nevados, a wonderful town located in Mérida State, Venezuela.
Los Nevados, is a population founded in 1591, located in the Sierra Nevada National Park in Mérida, Venezuela, located at 2,710 meters above sea level and with an approximate population of 650, distributed in 9 villages. Average temperature=15°C.
Its name is due to the glaciers of the Leon, Toro and El Espejo that could be observed from Los Nevados before its disappearance in the 60s.
The main activity of the area is tourism and agriculture. The cultivation of potatoes, corn, wheat and garlic stands out. They make long journeys to sell their crops to the state capital, Mérida.
We can get there through horses and donkey rides via the Loma Redonda cable car station (Mukumbari Cable Car System). You can also reach Los Nevados through a steep race (approximately 4 hours on the way).
The residents of Los Nevados want to know and work on less invasive and more environmentally friendly practices, produce healthier foods and thus maintain their touristic activities.
What is the approximate size of your Place, in square kilometers? (New question, not required)
What is the estimated population (current 2020) in your Place?
Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.
Environment: recovery of degraded areas due to uncontrolled agricultural practices.
Diet: cover the nutritional needs of the population with organic, non-toxic and sustainably produced food.
Economics: contribute to the increase of tourists and agricultural production through agroecology, as an alternative to the current means of production.
Culture: recover the ancestral agricultural means of production as well as the original seeds. This town has a strong indigenous roots that must be preserved.
Technology: introduce methods associated with biotechnology to accelerate the processes of transition to agroecological production and train the population for its use and sustainability over time.
Policy: involve social and government actors in this initiative in order to socialize and scale this process.
Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.
Our mission basically breaks the paradigm that traditional agriculture is the best means of food production. Basically with education, use of biotechnologies and participation of both residents and civil society, a transition from a tourist and agricultural area such as Los Nevados to a locality example of a sustainable agroecological model can be achieved.
High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.
The lives of the inhabitants of Los Nevados will be better and different because they will be protegonists of a change in their way of life when they return to their roots, to produce food in a friendly way with the environment, to recover their ecosystems and to be an ecotourism model for Mérida and Venezuela.
Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?
