Central Region of Kenya

What country is your selected Place located in?

Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

We have been using the Central Region of Kenya as a piloting region before we can go country wide by the end of this year (2020).

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

People from the central region are peaceful, loving, kind, generous among many. They love vegetables and fruits. They also love farming as its one of their largets source of income.

What is the approximate size of your Place, in square kilometers? (New question, not required)

What is the estimated population (current 2020) in your Place?

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

Farmers struggle to gain access to adequate seed, fertilizer and other inputs. Uptake of new technology is low. The effects of climate change is a source of grave, albeit familiar, concern for many people in Kenya and in East Africa generally – present formidable threats to farmers and pastoralists. Also, Kenya's agricultural sector is a high dependence on agricultural imports which renders the country vulnerable to fluctuations in global markets, increased national debt and variable weather patterns and can contribute to food insecurity even in the future.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

We are Enhancing  adaptation measures such as hydroponics farming and low-cos- small-scale irrigation projects, and in post-harvest technologies, to improve yields and reduce losses. Improving smallholder farmers’ access to markets through better supply chain management is also our critical area to making agriculture more productive.

Through these efforts, Kenya will increase agricultural productivity, lessen its dependence on agricultural imports and, in turn, contribute to strengthening food security across the country.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

More jobs will be created, turning around the country's economy, Another positive development will be the rapid expansion of farmers markets.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

People across the country will have access to food at an affordable prices, jobs will be created and and the country's economy will grow with over 10 digits.
