Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

I resided in Plateau state throughout my childhood. Plateau is located in the middle belt region of Nigeria with which means, it is situated in the tropical region of the country a higher altitude means that Plateau State has a near temperate climate with an average temperature of between 13 and 22 °C. Harmattan winds cause the coldest weather between December and February. The warmest temperatures usually occur in the dry season months of March and April. Which make it ideal for the cultivation of food crops on a large scale.Growing up, I watched people engage in traditional methods of farming all year round as a source of livelihood.Only to discover that it was tedious on both their standard of living, Security, their health and total market availability or scarcity (e.g irish potatoes cultivated in most parts of Plateau State especially Bokkos) for Nigerian markets as a whole. Also, witnessing first hand the effects of insecurities, most rural dwellers are scared to return to their farms. IoT technology food system can provide farmers with adequate tools to monitor their farms without physically being there, it can reduce mortality rates and increase the agricultural yield of the people pending the restoration of absolute stability in security.

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

Plateau State is a serene and temperate region with beautiful hills and grassland covering the area. the region is home to many species of wildlife as it provides a perfect condition for them to thrive. Over 300 species of attractive birds has been discovered. The mountains provides an amazing sunrise and sunset view, it also provides caves for the people which served as a source of defense in the olden days and beautiful tourist sites of waterfalls.Plateau State has a near temperate climate with an average temperature of between 13 and 22 °C. The state has over forty ethno-linguistic groups which includes;Berom, Afizere, Amo, Anaguta, Aten, Bijim, Bogghom, Buji, Jipal, Chip, Irchip, Fier, Gashish, Goemai , Irigwe, Jarawa, Jukun, Kadung, Kofyar (comprising Doemak, Kwalla, and Mernyang), Montol, Mushere, Mupun, Mwaghavul, Ngas, Piapung, Pyem, Ron-Kulere, Bache, Talet, Tarok, and Youm with seventeen Local Government Areas. The most common meal eaten by the people is a meal of 'Gwote' prepared with Acha grains also known as Digitaria exilis or Wolof foño. Leaders of these Local Government areas are elected by the people from amongst several contestants who may not be related to any past chiefdom leaders. As at October 2018,eleven out of the seventeen areas have elected Chairmen while Management Committee Chairmen have been appointed by the governor Simon Bako Lalong. Each ethnic group has its own distinct language, but as with the rest of the country, English is the official language in Plateau State; Hausa is also a common medium of communication and commerce as is the case in most parts of the North and Middle Belt of Nigeria.There have been cases of attacks away from the state capital, most recently, one which drew international attention as the site of multiple attacks attributed to Fulani herdsmen. These included a series of attacks carried out on Christian communities in Plateau State beginning on June 23, 2018, which were estimated to have taken the lives of at least 200 people and left many others homeless.many crops are cultivated on the plateau these includes cereals (rice, maize,millet, sorghum, Acha, wheat),tubers(sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes,yam), fruit( orange, strawberry, guava, avocado,apples),legumes. These crops serve as a source of revenue for the country through exports, the serve as raw materials for many food manufacturing industries and the provide food for farmers and community members. Through the use of IoT's people in this region can produce on a global scale,generate resources for their country and through security methods of IoT such as surveillance camera's, save lives. Recently, most people displaced internally by insurgence have not been able to farm or feed themselves leading to malnutrition and hunger, or send their children to schools because their livelihood has been taking away due to 'fear of what is lurking' leading to illiteracy and diminished mental health.

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

*The absence of technology is what causes poverty in most developing countries like Nigeria. However, most people only consider the harmful effects of technology such as information theft and Environmental pollution which results from technological misuse and lack of important polices of control. Over the years large quantities of CO2 have been emitted because of modern technological advancement such as cars and industries. This has been witnessed firsthand by the people of this region in modern times, the absence of rain for crops or flooding, very harsh weather conditions rather than the temperate one they are used to making any new form of technology difficult to trust.

*IoT makes it easy to track diets and recall unwholesome products which when consumed could lead to sickness. But, farmers are skeptical about this method of technology as they are already used to consuming certain products a certain way( consuming a diseased tomato or orange). Making it difficut for the system to operate.

*The challenges facing this system is, lack of development most of the people resident in the area are mostly likely unable to operate this technological sensors and training may be time and cost effective. Secondly, the insecurity facing the region will be a particular treat to the lives and property of the people and will make it highly difficult to assure security because of past experiences. 

*Thirdly, lack of funding will pose a major challenge as the government predominately focuses on petroleum for capital investments. therefore major polices regarding agriculture and food are not of modern standards.
*Also, the culture in that region of the world emphasizes that children should be out of school and struggle to make a living it may be difficult to convince their leaders to call for a change of rule that will allow children to learn IoT in and out of school to develop both themselves and the community.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

A statistical analysis through community mobilization has been reviewed and the system of mobilization is going to be adopted by members of this team. Training centers would be established to educate members of these communities on how access this technological advancement through their community leaders and social group. Thereby leading to technological advancement and education from sources they can relate to.

IoT-connected devices throughout the supply chain and food unit-level tracking will make recalls quicker and more narrow, allowing companies to identify exactly where tainted products are located and which have been consumed. like a smart fridge whose optical scanner alerts you to a spinach recall or an alert from the grocery store saying that you recently purchased a tainted product.

New technology which will boost food production, improve infrastructure, improve healthcare and provide sanitation facilities could dramatically change the quality of life in the developing world.

Security challenges would be addressed through surveillance and resource management which is one of the major constituent of the current farmer-herder clash which leads to insecurities.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

The future of IoT in Plateau State will encourage a set of already willing farmers who farm despite unsavory security, environmental and economical conditions to farm with more ease and generating profit for not just themselves but the whole nation at large in the long run. This system will restore the education balance for the children living in these communities, secure the future of environmental and agricultural tourism, improve standards of living reduce the prevalent rate of e.coli through diet monitoring which will reduce the mortality rate of children and adults in the community.

The system aims at improving the environment, improving nutrition, saving water, improving methods of irrigation, educating and mobilization of community members and the use of internet to control and manage various devices that will improve the food future by the year 2050.

Hi. Great project. One can get a small community to implement the project by aggregating farms within the selected community. A nucleus of a small number of farmers can be selected for the project. The success attain by nucleus group will be the catalyst to motivate farmers within the region to adopt the technology.
