How long have you / your team been working on this Vision?

  • 1-3 years

Lead Applicant: In what city or town are you located?

NAROK

Lead Applicant: In what country are you located?

KENYA

Your Selected Place: what’s the name of the Place you’re developing a Vision for?

We are working in siana division,in narok west

What country is your selected Place located in?

we are aiming at developing siana devision

Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

I am a member of this community, and i identify with their struggles in searching for safe water for animals and for accessing proper diet.

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

the main economic activity Is pastoralism, due to climate change, this activity has not been doing well due to long periods of droughts, therefore there is insufficient produce of milk and meat for food.80% of women and children in siana suffer diet related illnesses.

According to siana health center, 69% of women do not have the correct information regarding menstruation and menstrual hygiene.91 percent of women have undergone Female Genital Cutting of which they are forced to be married which constitute to child slavery.7 out 10 women live with depression because of the torture they undergo in Female Genital Cutting and early marriage. Mental illness is common among the women in siana and it is unfortunate that they hardly find a platform to address their issues. Teenage pregnancies is leading in our county at a high rate of 40% and it is 70% in Siana. most of this girls are victims of rape but they are afraid to talk about it in public since it is a taboo to discuss matters sex openly among the maasai community.

In Narok county, tuberculosis is the leading cause of morbidity at a high of 30% percent. The siana community fear tuberculosis because they believe that it is incurable, therefore many patients are traumatized because of being neglected by their relatives, while a good number suffer because they don’t have access to medical care as they are forced to travel to up to 200 km to get treatment.

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

the maasai community have a good relationship with the environment and nature, cows are a symbol of dignity.and when one looses cows to drought they marry off their young girls in exchange of cows and hence increase of poverty in the community.

harmful cultural practices is the major challenge in my community.child marriages have resulted to women growing up knowing how to observe a proper diet and that of her children.

women also fall the victim of drought and food shortage, being a male dominated community,a man has to eat them women and children will eat if there is plenty of food or eat nothing when there is little.

the community is bordering the game reserve ,hence those who want to farm are dicouraged by animals attack on their crops.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

my vision will  address the challenges in the following way:

provide education:through a series of community forums ,we will educate the community on the link between child marriage and poverty.we purpose to make them understand that marrying off girls for cows is a temporary solution.

we will also educate them on the alternative options of economic activity for example crop farming, bee keeping and poultry keeping as well as training them to be enterprenual and multiply wealth wisely.

policy marking:we will involve the government in implementing policies that will protect the communitys crops from being destroyed by animals.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

the change will be evident,as women and childeren will have access to proper diet, and girls will have access to education, the community will be empowered as when women are healthy the entire community will  be healthy because women contribute to 80 percent of the community welfare.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

access to a proper diet for a healthy community is my vision.when the community has food insufficiency have dull people who are stressed and sick and therefore they cannot engage in economic activities like trade.consequently they engage in activities that are destructive to the environment like charcoal burning, poaching, child marriage among others.

my vision shall address the environment, culture, technology and policy issues by providing training on engaging on various methods of farming like poultry, bee keeping and poultry farming, with adequate knowledge on various methods of farming and enterprenureship skills,we expect a community that is healthy and economically empowered.the harmful culture of marrying off girls will have no space becaused our vision would have carb its route cause.

with the collaboration of the local government,we intent to make policies that will protect girls against female genital cutting and those that will protect the community right of practicing crop farming,

when girls are educated,we expect that there would be change in the community as the level of dependence shall reduce.women and children shall have knowldege on how to take care of themselves and observe a balanced diet.
