Eastern Region of Uganda (Eastern Uganda) covering an Area of 39,478.8 km^2, with very diverse ethnic people some spread into Western Kenya.

Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.
In Eastern Uganda, particularly in Sironko district, am a son of the soil (meaning that I both originate from the area and have had some of my livelihood in the Place). Half of my target communities are mountain dwellers whose diet is mainly vegetarian and the other are scattered among flat lands mostly flooded over 9 months of the year thereby forcing only few food varieties to be feasibly accessible to the 9 million stomachs here. I selected this place because I feel these vulnerable communities should not suffer malnutrition and hunger due to food scarcity likely to take hold in the near future when the climate changes irreversibly.
Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.
Eastern Uganda is composed of Bantu people with varying cultures and language, with few words cutting across the 10+ languages spoken in this most diverse region of the country. Eastern Uganda is a region of abundant rainfall most of the year with a topography that ranges from flat-land plateaus towards the ranges of the volcanic Mt. Elgon towards the border with Kenya. The people in the entire Place here are have at least one farmer in the household who grows one of the four major crops of the area (coffee, bananas, maize and rice). The swampy flat-lands, where rice is grown, are mainly around shores of rivers such as, River Mpologoma, that draw water out of Mt. Elgon's crator lakes and drain into L.Kyoga while others drain into L.Victoria, the largest fresh water lake on the continent. Therefore the low-land people (the Basoga and the Bagwere) are heavily reliant on rice production and feed on rice most days of the week. The mountain dwelling people (the Bagisu) mainly grow coffee upslope and cultivate bananas and maize down-slope. For those food crops that cannot flourish in volcanic soils under montane climate, these communities struggle to access them. Due to this constraint, the Bagisu of the olden days became more vegetarian, feasting on a wide range of vegetables, some of which are inexistent in other parts of the nation and probably beyond. Chief among these still consumed today is a bamboo species locally called maleewa/maleya (pronunciation changes depending on which positioning along the Elgon slopes a community lives). Some are (almost endangered) tubers harvested from the ground weighing from 5kg to 150kg. Meaty diets are a rare dish in most households of this Place.
The Bagisu are the most ardent followers of cultural norms of which the most well known is the (even-year) circumcision ceremony held to initiate boys into men. Even with the urbanization trends, communities still gather to present their adolescent boys to be transformed into men worthy of fathering offspring. Recent changes in climate, however, are bringing about landslides and frequent mud-flows all of which are working together to make accessibility to other diet-enriched foods harder. The future appears to be unsustainable for the dwellers especially in the upper slopes of the many ranges of the mountain.

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.
Access to variety of healthy foods is the major problem for the largest number of the inhabitants of Eastern Uganda. The Environment makes the terrain nearly untraversable making the end-price of those foods that reach the communities very high to the community residents. Their bodies eventually suffer deficiency of some important nutrients. That is the current trend as of 2020.
30 years into the future (2050) it is likely that most mountain dwellers will have been probably washed down-slope, and the remaining low-land settlers probably drowned, all not fully because of a circumstance of their making. This will be due to scarcity of food which will have forced the communities to cut down all vegetation anchoring the mountain's rocks to make way for food-crop agriculture. Why starve to death when there is land covered by inedible forests?

3 Plates per stomach means we envision all the people of the Place enjoying all the major food nutrients in three independent meals of every day.
Poor nutrition leads to reduced immunity, increased susceptibility to disease, impaired physical and mental development, and reduced productivity. 3 Plates per stomach ensures all dietary needs of all residents of the Place are met. A healthy diet involves preparation of food and storage methods that preserve nutrients from oxidation, heat or leaching, and that reduce risk of food-born illnesses. Only then will macro-nutrients (such as carbohydrates, fats, fiber, proteins) and micro-nutrients (minerals, vitamins) be made available to the masses dwelling in the place.
Integration of proven Smart farming techniques will make each acre produce enough to feed hundreds of stomachs for months. When we integrate some automation into yields processing, post-harvest losses can be minimized. Our solar-powered vegetable freezers will ensure that harvested foods stay longer and reach the open markets while still in edible form. That is how our Vision will work together to ensure our Place is well fed and well nourished before 2050.
High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.
By 2050, thinking about food will be a thing of the past. It will be a universal right to have a minimum of three plates each day all pre-made having all the macro and micro-nutrients our natural bodies need to thrive. The Eastern Uganda community will be using less land for agriculture, eating their fills and preserving their relevant leftover foods for longer.
Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?
Our Vision, 3 Plates per stomach, encourages a regenerative and nourishing food future for the people of Eastern Uganda for 2050. The Environment of the Place will no more be affected by extensive deforestation, Diet will be embedded in the meals made available and affordable to the people, while using culture to promote new foods. Technology will be integrated in many farming processes and post-harvest handling. Policy of the place encourages and will still encourage diversity in feeding culture.
