Wikifarmer - Towards a New Farmers Democracy
Create a global platform where every farmer in the world can find growing information and can showcase his/her products.
Since June 2017, more than 3 million unique users from 240 countries have visited our platform, with zero marketing budget. About 50% of them are 34 years old or younger. These are the people that will carry out the 4th Agricultural Revolution and will reshape Agriculture for the next 40 years.
We take sustainability and environmental protection very seriously.

This is a screenshot of our Greek Marketplace. We have created a platform in which every farmer in the world will be soon able to make a profile, showcase his/her production, name a price and thus have greater chances to find a market. Our vision is to make every farmer in the world searchable. Google has crawled and indexed every single line that is published on the Internet. In the same way, we want to crawl and index all farmers and all crops around the globe.
We have multimedia content in 12 languages. Our challenge is to help every country, state, region, and neighborhood become food independent by growing sustainably their own food.
We have useful videos in 12 languages and we work towards educating people on how to grow their own food.

Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.
I have worked as an active farmer in Greece and I have seen first hand the difficulties the average farmer faces. I have also visited Cyprus and Turkey and I have interviewed several farmers that face the same difficulties.
Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.
Greece, Turkey and Cyprus are traditionally Farming Economies. Tens of millions of people earn their living through Agriculture. Unfortunately, farmers in these countries do not have educational resources on how to sustainably grow existing or new crops. They also struggle to sell their products at a fair price, due to oligopsony. This means that for every agricultural product in a given region, there are only one or two buyers that create unfair conditions. Thus, farmers do not have choices and -fearing that their products will be wasted- they sell at low prices. We have created a platform where first every farmer in the world can find useful information, and secondly, every farmer in Greece and Turkey can create a profile and showcase their products. Soon, we will extend our Marketplace globally. Wikifarmer will lead a regeneration in Agriculture and Food Systems by connecting smallholders to local buyers. Thus, food waste and environmental footprint will be reduced. Wikifarmer will enforce accessibility, transparency, fair prices, security and honesty across the food chain.
What is the estimated population (current 2020) in your Place?
Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.
Food waste and Environmental Footprint of our current food system are great challenges. Farmers produce enough food to feed everyone, but it is estimated that one every nine people go to bed hungry every night. Moreover, one-third of the food produced is wasted. The other two thirds that are finally consumed, have created emissions from their transport and storage, whereas a great portion of them could match local demand as fresh. Smallholders produce a small quantity of food, but they do not have storing facilities. They need to sell their products quickly to a local buyer, and at a fair price. Until now, there is no technology through which a smallholder can inform the world of his/her production and find a local market to sell the products. Things will get worse by 2050, as all the previously mentioned challenges will get worse (population, emissions, food waste).

Through our platform, every farmer in Greece, Turkey and soon in the whole world will have the chance to showcase the fresh products and deliver them locally to a buyer. We have already achieved proof of concept. We launched our platform in Greece during November 2019, and we have already 750 active farmers, 426 active buyers, and 620 transactions. We have already 120 active farmers in Turkey. As far as our library is concerned, we have 200.000 unique visitors every month from 200 countries, with zero marketing budget.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.
Every farmer in the world will become searchable and will have the chance to compete in the local or regional marketplace. Every buyer of agricultural products will have the chance to buy safely agricultural products, as (s)he can read reviews and critics of the farmer. Wikifarmer will lead a regeneration in Agriculture and Food Industry by forcing transparency, accessibility, security and honesty across the food chain and by eliminating unfair prices imposed by middlemen.
Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?
Through our platform, farmers will have more resources and choices to grow sustainably their crops, by reading thousands of contemporary growing guides in their mother language. Soil erosion and pollution by chemicals will be reduced, whereas biodiversity will be safeguarded. The environmental footprint of Agriculture will be reduced because people will spend fewer resources on storing and transporting agricultural products. Consumers will be also benefited because they will be able to find fresh agricultural products that are grown locally, rather than buying packaged and processed products that are shipped from overseas. People will be encouraged to engage in Agriculture because the whole ecosystem will be more fair, transparent and with greater financial motivation.
