Your Selected Place: what’s the name of the Place you’re developing a Vision for?

The primary place for which the project is proposed is Ilaro Ogun State. The site is 250sqkm North between Lagos and Ogun State, Nigeria.

Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

Client-customer relationship. I am a consultant to the commercial farm which deals in commercial rice and maize production. the entire farm has more than three hundred hectares of land under cultivation, 15% of which is currently cultivated to upland and lowland rice

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

The location chosen is largely agrarian with crop farming being the major occupation of the residents.The terrain is flat with vegetation of derived Savannah and humid climate. Soil type sandy and clayey and rice, the major crop is their major food. Being a location close to the border town between Nigeria and Republic of Benin and Nigeria, there are some immigrant residents from Benin who participate in farming and trading in the community. There are food and commodity markets in the area. It is hoped that establishing the projects in the location would improve the standard of life of the people in the area through job creation and technology transferred by the foreign experts coming while sustaining their environment through waste recycling

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

Nigeria has been the world’s second largest importer of rice, spending about N356 billion annually for about 2 million MT of milled rice. In view of the land border closure and ban on importation of rice to the country by the current administration, impacts on youths and the general populace, governments at the Federal, State and Local levels in Nigeria in recent time has prioritized formulation of agricultural development policies, which guarantee sustainable food rice production in Nigeria. Challenges of commercial production include: Lack of improved varieties, good processing technology with consequent unsatisfactory local content, poor value chain among others. Constrain to local content and acceptability of local rice in Nigeria is poor grain quality in terms of purity, colour, taste and packaging. The consumer-dream of quality rice can actually be actualized through transfer of same technology of production home from the source.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

1. To promote agriculture through integration of high-yielding rice varieties from Thailand with livestock in Nigeria for food security. 2. To use the Thai technology for production. 3. To use same technology for its processing. 4. To utilize same technology to improve grain yield of local varieties. 5. To add value with same technology to grains of local rice in terms of purity, color and taste. 6. To use bye products: Straws and bran to feed cattle and poultry respectively and use the dungs as organic amendment for cropping

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

1. The selected farm would become contact point for quality seeds for empowerment projects. 2. The trained farmers would be our ambassadors for further activities on rice within Nigeria. 3. The farms would become a point of reference for commercial production of quality rice in Nigeria 4. The project would be self-sustaining three (3) years after commencement 5. It would have created employment for more than one hundred youths the first three years of commencement

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

By 2050, this proposed project would have standardized a waste recycling procedure that would address pollution and global warming associated with wastes. production of quality rice, which will be grown in organic ways and using purely organic inputs, devoid of GMOs would guarantee good nutrition for the people. The chain of operation from planting to processing would created employment for youths, middlemen and market people and the success would be replicated to other states within Nigeria. The farm would be the major source for quality seed multiplication while facilities would continue to be utilized in trainig several other intending farmers who subsequently would be ambassadors to the project

Great project. Hope with time there will be technology transfer between Thailand and Nigeria by which our local can be improved upon to yield better. There is a similar project on rice submitted. A collaboration between the two project will be a plus.
