  • Under 1 year

Lead Applicant: In what city or town are you located?

Lead Applicant: In what country are you located?

United States of America

Your Selected Place: what’s the name of the Place you’re developing a Vision for?

Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area (Washington – Arlington – Alexandria)

What country is your selected Place located in?

United States of America

Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

In addition to living here, I have recently been made aware of food deserts in the Washington DC area and the thought of certain subdivision not having adequate access to fresh produce in the capitol of the United States of America is completely mind boggling.

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

Diverse communities from all around the world; The food is as diverse as the people but access to food is not uniformly easy across the area!

The climate consists of hot humid summers with plenty of sunshine and cold winters with lots of precipitation.

Fast paced and young multi cultural life in the city while being surrounded by open farm land, rivers, hills and forests.

Washington DC is probably best known for its huge culture of politics and being a melting pot of ideas and ideologies.

The food production here provides for (partially) the needs of the growing population and the local farms also serve as a near by getaway for city folks.

What is the approximate size of your Place, in square kilometers? (New question, not required)

What is the estimated population (current 2020) in your Place?

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

income inequality and social injustice have contributed to the rise of food deserts in lower income neighborhoods and future over population threatens to bring more congestion more pollution and more problems on a global scale.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

By utilizing the Virtual Villages Platform we can:

- measure, track and analyse and share the data for every aspect of the food production and supply chain for every contributor and consumer to help fine tune and drive growth.

- create new economic opportunities by creating new markets and new industries in support of individual and community owned micro-farms.

- provide transparent and equitable virtual/actual market for exchange and sale of produce.

- create incentive for local government and grassroots organizations to sponsor individuals and communities to grow their own food by utilizing the resources of the platform.

-engage policy makers and stakeholders to facilitate required changes to regulations of locally sources food production.

-bring transparency and awareness using data analytics gathered by the platform to inform the changing and growing needs of the community by early identification of trends.

-empower individuals, entrepreneurs, communities to collaborate and grow our new food industry.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

By bringing back the production of food in to our community this will lead to:

-stronger more socially engaged communities

-provide access to more nutritious fresh food with greater diversity

-healthier diet through reduction of over processed and none nutritious foods

-regaining the benefits of the knowledge and culture of producing our own food

-creating a sustainable, eco-friendly resilient food system that grows with our future

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

The Vision:

Facilitate and accelerate home grown food production solutions by connecting like minded individuals with hard data gathered from IOT enabled micro-farms.

By capitalizing on the upward trend and interest of families that are wiling to invest resources in food growth and contribution to the food supply chain this platform can provide a feed back mechanism that facilitates the exchange (barter or purchase) of the excess food these families produce; this in turn will help sustain and maintain the engagement of these families and promote the culture of growing food locally.

The platform also provides access to knowledge and technics using social media engagement of the community on how to grow more efficiently and responsibly as well as providing real time analytic data on other local growers to promote a balanced supply and demand of food and eliminate waste and increase productivity in the community.

By tracking and sharing the information of food growers and suppliers on the platform greater transparency is achieved and more trust is built in the food safety and security of the local community food system and ultimately results in driving down costs by eliminating refrigeration and storage needs as well as long distance transportation of goods.

As the trend to produce high quality locally sourced foods progresses there will be a shift from big agriculture practices to new micro-farming practices and this in turn will bring new rapid innovations in the new interconnected local food industry.

As more and more people join the "Virtual Village Platform" the local food economy will continue to grow and become more resilient.

Even densely populated urban areas can participate by forming community owned micro-farms on rooftops or local public and private grounds. These populated areas will also drive the demand for production from near by suburban micro-farms.

Eventually all the benefits of local farming will lead to facilitating policy change and help strengthen the new emerging economies created by this platform.

The annual National Gardening Survey

Overall, American gardeners reported spending a record $47.8 billion on lawn and garden retail sales, the highest ever, with a record average household spend of $503 – up nearly $100 over the previous year.

Imagine a world where growing food is part of our every day routine and sharing it is our favorite past time.

Imagine a world where we pride our selves in our ability to produce the highest quality sustenance for our selves and our neighbors to not only survive but to thrive in the healthiest way imaginable.

Imagine a world where decentralized farming has led to more entrepreneurship opportunities and guaranteed supplemental income bringing new jobs and education opportunities in the food sector for all communities specially lower income communities; Producers and consumers all benefiting from built in fair trade practices and a competitive transparent market provided by the platform.

Imagine a world where through the power of computing, every platform enabled micro-farm contributes to the our collective knowledge and promotes the advancements of the related technologies; And by utilizing the data gathered throughout the food supply chain we will be able to forecast the future needs of the local market and enable suppliers to react to any changes in the environment, climate, consumers demand etc. in real-time.

Imaging a world where opensource technologies from the fields of computer science, health and agriculture converge to seamlessly integrate in to our daily lives in the service of re-connecting us with nature and enhancing and enriching our physical and mental well being.
