Southwest zone of Nigeria which consists of Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Ondo, ekiti , and osun. it has approximately 70,500 square meter land area.

Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

it is the South-western zone of nigeria where the company is based. It is majorly a Yoruba speaking area, although there are different dialects even within the same state. it has more than 70,500 square meter land area with over 48 million population. The south-west zone was chosen because it has less exposure to agriculture when compared to the northern zone. There's quite a number of arable land yet to be cultivated, thus giving us potential for remarkable impact and also its nearness to the market makes it more comfortable to farm in this area. The standard road system also help in reducing the cost of production of our crops.

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

The south-west region of Nigeria offers a wide range of sights and experiences; from the beaches in Lagos to the natural springs in Osun state and from the historic city of Ibadan to the mountain caves of Ogun state.
South West Nigeria has six states; Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo. It is majorly a Yoruba speaking area, although there are different dialects even within the same state. The weather conditions vary between the two distinct seasons in Nigeria; the rainy season (March - November) and the dry season (November - February). The dry season is also the bringer of the Harmattan dust; cold dry winds from the northern deserts blow into the southern regions around this time.

Ekiti people are one of the largest ethnic groups among the Yorubas, with an ancestry in the migrated people of Ile Ife. They speak English, Ekiti and other varying dialects. However, dialect varies across different locations.

Lagos (meaning lakes) is known as the 'centre of excellence', as it is the commercial nerve-centre of Nigeria, having more than half of its industrial investments. It is a Yoruba speaking, south-western state, but the population consists of people from all tribes in the country and many different nationalities. the city also has a large, versatile sports stadium.

Ogun Also known as the 'gateway state'  Ogun deals in traditional arts, carving, sculpture, smithery amongst others. The state covers a landmass of 16,409sqkm,

Ondo popularly referred to as the "Sunshine State.The state boasts subsistence farmers, fishermen and traders as well as a seasoned crop of educated elite which led to its classification as one of the most educationally advanced states in Nigeria. The lifestyle of the people includes energetic dancing, the production of clothes, wood crafts, carved house-posts, decorated doors etc.  Ondo, with a land mass of 14,789sqkm.

Osun is an inland state with Osogbo as its capital city. Here you will find mostly traders, artisans and farmers, producing hand woven textiles, leather-work, and woven mats. Osun State has territorial boundaries in the West by Oyo State, Ondo and Ekiti States in the East, Kwara State in the North and Ogun in the South. The State operates an agrarian economy with a vast majority of the populace farmers.

Oyo is known as the 'Pace Setter State'. Ibadan, the capital and most important city, is the third largest metropolitan area (by population) in Nigeria after Lagos and Kano. Oyo enjoys a similar dual climate condition to the rest of the south-western states, with a rainy season and a dry season. The climate is ideal for the cultivation of crops like maize, yam, cassava, millet, rice, plantain and cashew.

Oyo State covers a total of 28, 249 square kilometres of land mass and it consists of old hard rocks and dome-shaped hills. A remarkable natural feature in the state is the Old Oyo National Park.

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

Environment: In spite of the oil, agriculture remains the base of the Nigerian economy, providing the main source of livelihood for most Nigerians despite the fact that there is still 34 million hectares arable land uncultivated. Nigeria's wide range of climate variations allows it to produce a variety of food and cash crops . However, food (crop) production increases have not kept pace with population growth, resulting in rising food imports and declining levels of national food self-sufficiency (FMARD, 2008). Economy: Nigeria is facing a lingering food crisis. Between 2008 and 2013, production of staple cereal foods (maize, millet, rice, sorghum, wheat, and other cereals) declined by 11.8% from about 28.8 million tons to about 25.4 million tons. Also, spice (pimento and other spices) and tomato production shrank by 1.7% and 14.1%, respectively over the same period. National Bureau of Statistics data analysed by Daily Trust showed that from 2016 to the first half of 2019, Nigeria spent N54.51 trillion importing manufactured goods, mostly food, and agricultural goods. Within the period, agricultural goods import gulped N38.24 billion while manufactured goods import gulped 19.54 billion. Diet: Also looking at diet, Nigeria ranks 42nd out of 195 countries with the highest rate of diet-related deaths, with low intake of whole grains being the leading dietary risk factor for mortality and disease in Nigeria, United States (US), India, Brazil, Pakistan, Russia, Egypt, Germany, Iran, and Turkey. A study published in The Lancet by the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) estimates that one in five deaths globally - equivalent to 11 million deaths - are associated with poor diet, and that diet contributes to a range of chronic diseases in people around the world. According to UNICEF, six million children are affected by life threatening severe acute malnutrition in West and Central Africa with statistics revealing that one-third of Nigerian population where the south-west fall are malnourished with more trend of diet-based disease. Malnutrition is a major public health concern in developing countries and the most common cause of childhood blindness in the world. Technology and policy: In June 2017, it was ascertained by the minister of agriculture that Nigerian wastes 30-40% of the food crops grown and its likely to increase by the years due to lack of technology from the farm leading to decrease crop yield to lack of storage to properly store this crops before it gets to the final consumers. Also there hasn't been favorable policies that guides how and where food crops should be stored to prevent this wastage . Culture: The south-west culture due to the level of literacy sees farming as a poor man job because it has not brought the type of money people will actually expect as compared to other sectors and this poses a threat to sustainability of agriculture in this sector as the millennial who will then represent more of the population by 2050 have loss interest in agriculture.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

From our vision, towards healthier nation is a movement to help improve the diet of the people in our place thereby having a positive effect on the economy, technology, environment, cultural beliefs and importantly diet. Diet: Several approaches have been attempted one of which is the fortification of common foods with micro-nutrients, improvement of dietary quality through the diversification of foods. Orange fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) is a good source of the basic nutrients and different vitamins, minerals, polyphenols and antioxidants (Sateesh and Solomon 2019). Traditionally, sweet potato varieties produced and sold in southern Africa have a pale colored flesh, but new bio fortified orange flesh sweet potato varieties (OFSP) have been introduced. They present high concentrations of β-carotene (provitamin A) (Oirschot et al., 2003; Oki et al., 2006; Tomlins et al., 2012). Orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) is one of the bio fortified staples bred for high provitamin A potential (CIP, 2006). Burri (2011) reports the importance of orange-fleshed sweet potato, as an intervention food to prevent vitamin A deficiency. One of the ways we will use in tackling this challenge is the production of OFSP bread, Orange fleshed juice, orange fleshed cookies and other home-made diets. OFSP has enormous health benefits recommended for domestic consumption Economy: Production of healthy food products which has a high consumer rate using the Orange fleshed sweet potato is one of the ways of improving the diet and economy of the people and place. Bio-fortifying one of the most consumed product to a desirable taste and replicating this in over 50 locations will help improve accessibility. Also, the ingredient to be used is affordable which makes it more economically viable and affordable for people thereby reducing import rates of flour which is the major ingredient used in bread production. Environment: Cultivation of more food products like the high consuming food products will require cultivating and making use of more percentage of our arable lands, also helps in increasing our nation food self sufficiency, knowing fully well that our climates is suitable for growing crops like potato. Technology and policy: One of our approach is to use digital technology because of the large scale production, the Nigeria bread industry worth over 120 billion naira as at 2018 with larger percentage from the south-west. To be able to meet up this demand with incorporation of the fortified crops, digital technology is needed for ease of production, increase in yield and harvest . Culture: One of the important facts we've realized is that millennial are important in a regenerative and nourishing food future, and to position rightly for 2050, our vision is to train young people on the good agricultural practices, help them see the potential of agriculture and its value addition which will make them stand out from other sectors within the next three decades.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

Nigeria, with her huge endowed natural and human resources is not spared. Nigeria still has the potentials to be food-secure if the our vision is adopted and implemented: The people will have access to affordable healthy food products through the incorporation of balanced nutritious meals such as production of the Orange fleshed sweet potato into food products and bio fortification of staple food crops by increasing vitamins and minerals. Reducing vitamin and mineral deficiencies is an important tool in achieving the sustainable development goals and this will also be felt by the people. Fortification is a relatively inexpensive strategy, benefiting everyone who eats fortified food made with fortified crop, plus it does not require consumers to change behaviors and management of diet-based diseases and environmental degradation. our people will be health and our malnutrition rate will decrease.There will be awareness to people in the place about how the fortified food products can benefit their health and the technology involved in making this possible. Production of this fortified products will also create employment to many youths in the place. . Also it will help to rebrand agriculture from the current cultural belief and make government make favorable policies as regards the sector.This vision will help to address the goals of sustainable development and help create platform for foreign investors in order to exchange value. it will help increase the technology awareness of the people and position them rightly for the competitive market. Also, agriculture will be seen as the new white collar job, which will draw the millennial to the sector, People will be ready to farm and produce their food and for other nations. The import rates will decline and help improve our strength as a nation who is self sufficient. There would be a decline in wastage percentage making the efforts of the farmers more valuable.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

Nigeria’s agriculture sector is the most vibrant non-oil sector contributing significantly to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and economy. However, Nigeria still remains largely food insecure as shown in the 2019 Global Food Security Index which places Nigeria 96th out of 113 countries examined. Interestingly, we see our place and the lives of our people changing greatly. Each step in our vision is set to address the environment, diet, economy, culture, technology and politics Economy: Our vision will create a platform that provides Enhancement of farmer to farmer information sharing system which requires continuous knowledge updates and logistical backstopping, the farmers will be educated on the multiplication, production and maintenance of the crop. Recognition of government programs for community service delivery. Wider market linkages for roots, chips and pastry products from orange fleshed sweet potatoes. Broadening of the orange fleshed sweet potato utilization by incorporating it into livestock feed production to minimize on wastage at farm level and pest breeding. Accessible, viable and low cost vines to farmers especially during dry season. All this will help and have a positive effect on our import rates and economy in general because it will require more labor in production and processing of the food products, also the value addition into finished goods will also help increase the return on investments in the agricultural sector. Technology: Catching up with the rate of technology change e.g. variety release,education in soil management in order to conserve our soil nutrient and get maximum yield from our crops when planted e.g. using of cover crops such as orange fleshed sweet potato to form boundaries etc., proper quarantization of our seedlings before planting and innovative ways of dealing with the pest and crop diseases in our place. We are also set to adopt new ways of improving our technology through training and provision of required facilities to enable innovate higher yield variety of products, through use of advanced technology like satellites and drones etc. This will help place the agricultural sector in the right position to attract favorable policies to the sector, enabling more partnerships and collaborations. Diet: Food fortification has been considered as a public health strategy to enhance nutrient intakes of a population. With the knowledge that one-third of the country is malnourished, our vision creates a platform to produce affordable nutritious meals by regenerating our highly consumed food products into more nutritious products through bio-fortification e.g. the use of orange fleshed sweet potato in production of juice, bread, flour etc. through diverse research and development of how the different varieties can be grown at low cost and suitable for the health. Environment: Our vision is set to help illuminate the agricultural sector by training and educating people in the place on how to increase their yield and observe global agricultural practices to make our food more nutritious and safe. Adequate nutrient intake increases productivity in adults, leading to improved productivity in agricultural labor. This will increase agricultural production, subsequently providing growth in the food supply and helping to combat hunger.Also, creation of small agricultural businesses that will help put our arable land to use and make wealth from our natural resources and also guarantee to farmers for off-take of produce to be processed into more nutritious food products. This will also help increase number of farmers and people's attitude towards farming. Culture: Our vision is set to help re-brand and make our locally produced food products more desirable by training young people on the need for agriculture and importance of value-addition in this sector and ways to do agriculture better and see it as the most desirable sector to work and invest in. Policy: Our vision is set to create a platform where the agricultural sector will rightly position itself to adapt to changing policies and government laws, also engaging the government in the production of volumes of food products that will help us harness foreign exchange benefits to attract foreign investors for exchange of value
