Lead Applicant: In what country are you located?

Canada

Your Selected Place: what’s the name of the Place you’re developing a Vision for?

Farms in Iowa

What country is your selected Place located in?

United States of America

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

We have not decide yet the specific farm/farmers we will be working with for this project.

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

Humans have converted ~12% of the earth’s ice free land surface area to grow crops, fuel, and fibre, and ~22% for grazing cattle, pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, and other forms of livestock. Agriculture represents the largest human land footprint on the planet. Rising demand for agricultural products is currently straining the Earth’s life supporting systems. Can big agriculture in the Iowa state can set an example on how to grow healthy and environmentally sustainable food by 2050? We believe it can.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

The food system in the XXI century is a highly complex issue requiring a view that integrates multiple dimensions and aspects. Food availability, quality, access, utilization, and the stability of each of these components, all depend on agricultural production, employment, poverty, economic growth, climate, human health, biodiversity loss, water, pollution, consumption, and societal norms. With the research and the maps (https://www.colours-of-food-security.com/exhibition/a-cultivated-planet/) we have been creating and the work we have been developing with farmers in the midwest USA, we are confident that will be able to refine and propose a vision where big agriculture becomes part of the solution.
