Del Carmen, Siargao Islands, Surigao del Norte, Philippines

Lead Applicant: In what country are you located?

Your Selected Place: what’s the name of the Place you’re developing a Vision for?

Siargao Islands Siargao, hailed as the top island destination in Asia for 2018, is a small island covering 437 square kilometers.

What country is your selected Place located in?

Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

Siargao is a rapidly developing island in the Philippines due to it's booming tourism. I've been assigned to work here in 2018 and have grown to consider it a home. Now, I'm working with the local youth to continue the mission in ensuring that locals would not starve in their own land.

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

The island is a rural agricultural land now gaining recognition as a top tourism destination area. Locals grew up eating unprocessed foods such as fish and vegetables with only a few varieties of spices. It has only been recently that the island welcomed new spices and cuisines. The island contains the largest mangrove forest reserves in Mindanao, Philippines. Just like the rest of the Philippines, the island experience tropical weather. It also is one of the east islands that welcome entering monsoons in the country.

What is the estimated population (current 2020) in your Place?

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

.Siargao is known to many as the top island destination in Asia. It is home to more than 10,000 locals and have continued to attract more than 2,000 tourists and expats per day. What many do not now is that 60 to 90% of the fruit vegetables and food crops are imported.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?
