Lead Applicant: In what city or town are you located?
Kalomo,Southern Province of Zambia.Lead Applicant: In what country are you located?
ZambiaYour Selected Place: what’s the name of the Place you’re developing a Vision for?
Kalomo, southern province ,Zambia. What country is your selected Place located in?
ZambiaDescribe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.
It is were our cooking oil.business takes place.
Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.
With the estimated population of 280.000 people by 2020,kalomo.district is a district where way above 60% of the population live on agriculture.
Maize farming and livestock farming are the main.farming activities taking place here.
But now with national lose of. Over 50% of the crop due to low rainfall needs solutions to be created for farmers, because low rainfall natural vedt has also reduced and animal food has also reduced as grass deteriorates.
Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.
The challenges faced in our area are environmental, due to climate change in the general national production.which is 3.8 million metric tonnes reduced to less than 50% and southern province was the worst affected including our dustrict ,in other cases farmers harvested zero, because of low precipitation.
The economic signicance the main crops maize, cotton and sugar cane which were previously maize contrbuters to the GDP will be dubulated as follows.
Maize out put has kept on.deducing in.last two years because of low rain, cotton because of fall of prices on.international market and lack of country 's capacity to process the crop. Locally has terribly reduced its growing because exporting raw materials is also exporting money.
On the other even if nothing has changed by growing and procceaing sugar cane, the problem.is that it has poor traction.of the people who need other people to help them,it is grown by commercial farmers mostly, small scall farmers are many and poor and they are the ones who need help.
Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.
The challenges are extreme rural.poverty, low house hold food security, poor livestock production
Our vision will address these challenges by providing a lucrative market to the farmers for their sunflower.
In the midist of producing nothing because of low rain affected maize, the farmers will at least harvest something in the low rain situation to earn money.
Because the veldt is dry animals have no food, because of the coking oil.processingprocessing we do ,farmers have an opportunity to buy sunflower cake from us to supplement their animals.
High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.
We expect to have a community of population of the about 240,000 people accounting for about 70% of the population to have an assured crop to sell atleast because of the draughty tolerance of sunflower
We expect farmers to be able to have sustained production of milk, beef and eggs despite natural veldt being deterioted..
Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?
By 2050 multiplier effects our project like education, closing of rich poor gap will.have closed.
How did you hear about the Food System Vision Prize?
