Your Selected Place: what’s the name of the Place you’re developing a Vision for?
Berlin, the capital of Germany, covers a total are of 892 km2
What country is your selected Place located in?
Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.
Berlin vibrates with young people looking for change, alternatives and new ways of thoughts. It wants to change, and it is where I chose to live for this reasons. I find it a great place to start, because people are looking for initiatives to change habits, to grow more sustainable, but at the same time there is also a lot of industry, and disconnection, and a need for education and raising awareness. I find Roots Radicals to be part of the 'chain reactants' for sustainable change, and moving forward from Berlin to other needed cities, to create more social impact.
Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.
Berlin is the capital and largest city of Germany by both area and population. Its 3,748,148 inhabitants make it the second most populous city proper of the European Union after London. The city is one of Germany's 16 federal states. It is surrounded by the state of Brandenburg, and contiguous with Potsdam, Brandenburg's capital.
Berlin is a world city of culture, politics, media and science. Its economy is based on high-tech firms and the service sector, encompassing a diverse range of creative industries, research facilities, media corporations and convention venues. Berlin serves as a continental hub for air and rail traffic and has a highly complex public transportation network. The metropolis is a popular tourist destination. Significant industries also include IT, pharmaceuticals, biomedical engineering, clean tech, biotechnology, construction and electronics. It is also a very important city for sustainability and circular economy with constant efforts from the city to change the way things are now.
Berlin is the city of art and freedom. Vibrates with young people, various languages, embraces migration and respects culture.
What is the approximate size of your Place, in square kilometers? (New question, not required)
Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.
Current challenges englobe the legal aspect of rescuing fruits and vegetables as well as modeling a circular economy when regulations and prices are so strict and cheap towards initiatives that ask for mono and over-production. Making the financials work for that matter.
The future will be challenged as ideally, foodwaste will be reduced and so our business will have to iterate to become an efficient and circular business, but with more regional production, not necessarily with rescuing but more with connecting to traditions to continue teaching and growing generations through this aspect, to respect our land, our soil by respecting what we eat and how.
Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.
1. We are finding ways to have certain products or more aspects of the business that feed and sustain others which right now are harder to sustain - but that we know will soon be better.
2. As said iteration will be continuing to be circular but not rescuing fruits and vegetables, where by 2050 ideally this is no longer a problem to be envisioned.
High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.
The impact of initiatives around circular economy and sustainability , focused on community building and education is that we can learn to value our lifestyles more and make healthier decisions regarding that. Not only by healthy meaningn our food, but anything that nourishes us by being more in line with nature and our planet, and by being more connected. Roots Radicals wants to extend in the future to teaching and helping women in difficult and poor areas as well, as we believe they are the teachers and nurturers of our future.
Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?
Roots Radicals is an authentic, handcrafted and Zero Waste food project that aims to reconnect people with food.Food is a vehicle of values, culture, and identity. It builds communities. It has the power to change us, reconnect us, and raise our consciousness and awareness. At Roots Radicals we want to bring the idea of the 'production kitchen' to our community, by creating a hub in Berlin: an open kitchen, food store, and Café. We believe that showing all processes of how our food is prepared will offer a window to reconnect to a process we sadly no longer experience. Community, education, information and transparency are fundamental to us, and we will offer workshops to fight food waste at home. Care, time, and love are our added ingredients, as we believe that they carry the magic and wisdom needed to channel lost traditions.Roots Radicals is taking part in the fight against food waste! We believe in the Circular Economy, and we cook focusing highly on efficiency, zero waste and upcycling. Through culinary innovation we create new products and processes that help Us design the so-called “waste” out of the food system: we up-cycle rescued food into delicious products and we also up-cycle from our own processes. With a seasonal, regional, and cultural focus our products are mostly long-lasting conserves such as pickles, ferments, sauces, soups, vinegars, fruit preserves, and spices. All delicious products suitable for day-to-day cooking as well as for special occasions. We look to inspire and empower people into changing habits of consumption by shifting our participation from a 'throw-away' economy to a participation in a 'circular economy'. Roots Radicals conducts our effort in transitioning from competition to cooperation, from manipulation to emergence, from hiding and over-protecting to being open source. We are part of the change we want to see in the world.
