What country is your selected Place located in?

Nigeria

Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

Taraba has a massive landmass that is not been cultivated and is very fertile for rice farming. I met a trained rice seed producer that enlighten and took me on tour of Taraba and it land mass.

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

Taraba is one of the north central state in Nigeria that consists of different ethnic groups but the general vernacular is Hausa. The people of Taraba are friendly accommodating and mostly peasant farmers.

Taraba has a massive landmass which is fertile for rice production both in wet and dry season but unfortunately the land is not utilized to it maximum capacity in the farming and processing of rice. The land mass in Taraba is enough to produce rice for Nigeria as a whole.

In 2018 after my company registration i went in search of land for rice farming and in the process i meet an IITA trained rice seed producer and we started rice farming in our little capacity but we intend to make it nationwide and stop the importation of rice and make Nigeria one of the largest rice producing country.

What is the estimated population (current 2020) in your Place?

2300764

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

Rice is the number one food in Nigeria, with Nigeria been rice sufficient it will not only provide food for the mass at affordable prices but it will also provide jobs for the citizens from farming to processing of rice and selling, jobs will be provided at all levels depending on skills and qualifications.

Rice is prepared in Nigeria in different ways depending on cultures or ethnicities, we have the jollof rice that is widely eaten all over Nigeria, we have tuwu chikafa (rice pudding) eaten by the northerners, ofada rice and stew eat western part of Nigeria and the general rice with stew, vegetable rice.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

The government has stop importation of rice in order to encourage and promote rice farming in Nigeria but this has been difficult considering that most farmer's can't access loan to farm or increased their productivity, we will assist farmers in providing them with machinery, improve seeds.

Since rice is a staple food found in every household in Nigeria, we will educate the housewife, mothers, cook and household members how to cook and combine rice with different foods to complement each other to achieve adequate nutrients.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

Rice will become affordable in Nigeria, jobs will be available to the citizens, there will be regional rice cooking competitions to encourage people to learn new ways of cooking and eating to achieve adequate nutrients

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

Provision of jobs

Affordable foods

Rice cooking competitions
