Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.
This place was selected because i have observed an uninterrupted growth of many indigenous crops and fruits. The place is important to me because these are folks whom i can approach at any time, even in the face an interview, they can freely give a feed back. Am connected to the place because it is my home area,
Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.
Iganga district is along the Trans African Highway that runs from Mombasa Kenya to Kigali in Rwanda.It is found in Eastern Uganda, 37 kms from Jinja Town. It is basically dominated by Basoga speaking people, a tribe among a large ethnic group of the Bantu. There are some scatty Indians especially in the Main town centre of Iganga, and other scattered tribes from other parts of the country who are attracted to carry out trade. The main town is very small with only 6Km^2, but very busy with many economic activities. The Main food is Posho and sweet potatoes. These are backed up by other foods such as matooke, rice. yams, pumpkins and millet . Its climate is tropical, with a generally flat topography. The culture is a kisoga culture with a strong belief in ancestors, and having many children as a source of wealth (girls) and security (boys). They have a traditional ruler (Kyabazinga) who is hereditary chosen and some times, he is chosen from the princes from the 11 royal clans.The language is Lusoga. The unique cultural trend is that, visitors have to be welcomed, since no home has a pathway. There has been a rural breakdown because of globalization and the rural electrification effect, and the role of information technology, it is a little hard to distinguish urban from rural centers. Agriculture is still the leading economic activity for both subsistence and commercial sustenance, with maize and sweet potatoes as the dominant crops. People hope that if the government can fully back them up and regulate the prices or even being the sole buyer, and revive stores and home storage facilities like granaries, as it was in early 70s. Because of the few foreigners and the globalization effect, local people especially in urban centres have coped foreign deities, modification of crops and this has affected their health, as many are suffering from several cancers.
Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.
The biggest challenge emanates from technology and policy, where the government policy is on new gene editing techniques; call it gene modification, which modified crop species survive on spraying. This affects their resistance, diet and environment. It has ruined the indigenous crop species and even the crops that can survive without modification , spraying and addition of inorganic fertilizers such as yams, pumpkins, cocoa yams millet among others are very unpopular and considered less tasty especially in the young generation. Yet these are foods that have stood a test of time because of their ability to withstand any weather condition and never attacked by pests and diseases.
Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.
I envision that, if these indigenous/traditional crops are restored and reinforced, there will be no need of modification and hence no diet related challenges. These crops play arole in environmental conservation because most of these thrive best on trees which have been cut down by the current farming system. But also their rate of production is pretty high to cater for a fast growing population by 2050.
High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.
Once the above is adopted by the populace, even the lifespan of people will increase, because food will be naturally generated and will not be poisonous as it is currently. The crops am advocating for do not need spraying nor modification as it is the state currently.
Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?
Food that is naturally cultivated and needs trees to thrive, does not require sprays, herbicides and no need for modification and can thrive on any soil type will by all means address environmental, diets, economics, cultural, technological and policy concerns.
