Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.
I was born and brought up in Bangalore. Since I am a local to the city, it provides an advantage in terms of knowledge and familiarity about the urban profile, demographics, dynamics, communication and most importantly, the people. We selected this BTM Layout ward because it is one of the most densely populated areas with 24881 persons/sq.km according to BBMP, the municipal corporation responsible for the administration of Greater Bangalore Metropolitan Area. Also, another reason is because the area houses a large working (white-collar and blue-collar) migrant population who mainly depend on external sources for their food requirements. Since the target of our endeavour is to choose an area with a high population density mainly consisting of working migrant population, this locality significantly aligns with our vision and presents a great opportunity to pilot and fructify our idea.

Bangalore, popularly called India's ‘Silicon Valley’ is an amalgam of the old and new. Craft-beer joints, pubs and quirky cafes peacefully coexist with the temple town, parks and its striking vestigial Victorian architecture. Officially called Bengaluru, it is the capital of the Province of Karnataka in Southern India. Bangalore was also in the news this year as it was ranked as the most dynamic and the fastest changing city in the world based on its ability to change, innovate, and adapt to constantly evolving conditions as determined by the leading global realty firm Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL). The city has changed massively, an 'urban metamorphosis' of what once used to be a 'Pensioner's Paradise', now into an 'Industrial Hive' rapidly changing every aspect of its living ethos and its quintessential simplicity. Coupled with its growth, the city takes pride in being the centre of India’s IT-high-tech industry and a rapidly growing start-up ecosystem drawing youth from different parts of the country and the world adding to its growing diversity. With a population close to 8.5 million and still rising, it is also one of the most cosmopolitan cities in India reflected in its urban potpourri of people, language, culture and food. With the gift of benevolent climate throughout the year, the city has also adopted this benevolence in welcoming diversity in all aspects, including its long dining table ranging from crispy golden Masala Dosas of Vidhyarthi Bhavan to buttery Mushroom Risottos at Little Italy, Bangalore's astronomical gastronomy! If it takes 80 days for Passepartout to travel the world, it only takes 10 menus in Bangalore!
Lying in the vicinity of South Bangalore, BTM Layout is a ward or an administrative division sprawling over 2.13 sq km with a burgeoning population of 52250. When expanded, BTM stands for Byrasandra, Tavarekere, and Madivala. BTM Layout’s proximity to the Central Business District (CBD) and IT industrial areas such as Electronic City, Marathahalli-ITPL, Bannerghatta Road along with commercial centres like Koramangala makes it one of the more desired residential and commercial areas for young working professionals. With planning, good connectivity and physical infrastructure consisting of adequate road network, public transit system, supermarkets and gyms, it also enjoys good social infrastructure having a good share of quality educational institutions and hospitals making it attractive to different segments of the urban population which explains its high population density. The demography mainly consists of middle class young working people and families who have migrated from different parts of the country particularly from Northern India looking for lucrative careers in Bangalore's growing economy. Since working conditions get hectic amidst busy cycles of work, it impacts the general diet increasing their external dependencies for food which explains the massive growth of restaurants and food businesses in this area.
