Before the official creation of the NGO-TRAVAILLONS, we already evolved in this activity in Kongo-central but on a small scale. We are working on the production of broilers and laying hens. We make food in a rudimentary way.

Location: the farm is located in KIMPIKA, an agricultural village located ± 30km from the city of Kinshasa. Being a village close to the capital that has over 20,000,000 inhabitants, its impact is very significant. Kimpika is located in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kongo-central Province, Kasangulu territory ± 30 km from the city of Kinshasa. We evolve in the place because, it makes it easier for us to source inputs in Kinshasa and we sell our products daily to traders coming from the capital. The community also helps us to produce certain cereals for the manufacture of food. Ex: Soybeans, corn, cowpeas ...

KIMPIKA is an agglomeration of more or less 50,000 inhabitants. This population is called BAHUMBU. She uses the KIKONGO dialect. They are a very social people, less aggressive, their diet is more dominated by green leaves, cereals, cassava and corn flours, fresh and smoked fish, salted fish and broilers.

At their parties of any kind, chicken meat never fails. This is the signal that the party has been successful. When a visitor arrives, they are well received with a chicken sauce. BAHUMBU loves low cost farming and poultry farming. However, this ethnic group undergoes the integration of BATEKE, BATANDU. Culture knows the influence of the capital, which is a great center for mixing civilizations.

Due to food monotony, growth in children is retarded. The hope of these people is to introduce new eating habits through the consumption of eggs and fresh chicken meat to increase animal protein in the human body.

What is the estimated population (current 2020) in your Place?


Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

The population of KIMPIKA is estimated at ± 50,000 inhabitants (2019 statistics)The major challenges to be met are that, in relation to demography, the production of both agriculture and livestock is in deficit. Reason why, a great effort is made so that by 2050, each household is able to consume 20kg of fresh meat per day and at a cost accessible to all, because, in certain families, a chicken of 6kg is not consumed only on January 1 and by 10 family members. Up until now, at KIMPIKA, eating chicken has been a luxury and a prestige.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

This activity will make KIMPIKA very attractive because, visitors will be at the daily meeting, commercial activities will increase especially the restaurants and small markets; there will be a reduction in unemployment and an increase in agricultural activities because the waste from these poultry will be used as fertilizers. The diet will automatically change due to crop interference. So KIMPIKA will have an influx of visitors that will attract sustainable development.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

The population of Kimpika being totally peasant, the standard of living is also too low because of lack of vision. With the presence of the modern poultry farm that we are going to set up, there will be a technological revolution, because the environment will become a commercial center. The population will start to sell a lot, so there is a lot to produce. There will be a significant reduction in unemployment because there will be many activities which will require a large workforce; there will be a reduction in the rural exodus. To this end, sedentary life will take root; the high commercial activities will reduce poverty and with the presence of other people foreign to this tribe, there will be an improvement in eating habits. Thus, around 2050, Kimpika will become a major center of trade and the standard of living of the population will even increase to 75% compared to this day.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

Like evoking above; Kimpika’s modern poultry farm will bring innovation to the community because poultry farming requires a well-sanitized and well-drained place. This activity will influence the improvement of the food system by the introduction of new dishes from the production of eggs and broiler chickens. With the influx of people, trade, the economy at all levels will grow and this will bring about the reduction of poverty, there will be increased agricultural production, processing of both agricultural products that livestock will settle and finally, state services will also have a considerable boom.

Impact: the criteria for evaluating the impact will be defined as soon as the project is launched, an ad hoc framework will be implemented to determine the level of impact acquisition.
