Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

I am born in Ekiti State Nigeria and I grew up there Ekiti/Ondo State. I knew the terrain, climatic condition and language of communication very well. I understand the ecosystem and familiar with the annual crops, cash crops and over 500 forest tree species used as food in the two areas.

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

The people of Ekiti/ Ondo are culturally homogeneous and they speak Yoruba language consisting of various dialect. The homogeneous nature confers on the them some uniqueness among the states of the federation. Slight differences are noticeable in the dialects of the Yoruba language spoken by the communities compared  to other states.

Ekiti/Ondo land is naturally endowed with numerous food resources including yam, cassava, potato, oil palm and also grains like rice, millet and maize. Other notable crops such as kola nut, varieties of fruits and vegetables are also cultivated in commercial quantities. Typical Ekiti/Ondo man can not do without pounded yam in a day, with melon soup, Okra, bitter leaf or Isapa crowned with bush meat. Other common staple foods include eba, amala, fufu etc.

Ekiti/Ondo land enjoys tropical climate with two distinct seasons. These are the rainy season (April–October) and the dry season (November–March). Temperature ranges between 21° and 28 °C with high humidity. The south westerly wind and the northeast trade winds blow in the rainy and dry (Harmattan) seasons respectively. Tropical forest exists in the south, while derived savannah occupies the northern peripheries. Topography is mainly an upland zone, rising over 250 meters above sea level. It lies on an area underlain by metamorphic rock. It is generally an undulating part of the country with a characteristic landscape that consists of old plains broken by step-sided out-crops that may occur singularly or in groups or ridges. These out-crops serve as sources to various rivers.

The people are culturally homogeneous and highly intellectual agriculturalist Yoruba-speaking people that forms a sub-group of the larger Yoruba ethnic group in Nigeria. They are well-known for their diverse and quality of traditional arts, music, poetry and witty sayings. The people are highly rich in culture and have their own unique traditional way of: Dressing, Dancing, Festival,religion and other ways of life. The rulers of the Towns are Obas like other Yoruba Towns. Traditionally, the natural rulers in these places, ,are usually described as sacred or divine kings. Egungun or Imaleidiroko Festival is one of the unique cultural trend in the place. The festival is done to invoke the deities believed to be in-charge of ethical and moral standards of the people. The festival is sometimes performed during the death of a very important personality in Yoruba land more especially old men and is also done annually.

Agriculture is a major occupation, providing income and employment for more than 75% of the population. The major cash crops grown in the place are cocoa, coffee, kola nut, cashew and oil palm. Arable crops grown are yam, cassava, maize cowpea and cocoyam. The consumption of freshly produced food and particularly forest vegetables as food and medicine has a positive impact on the health of the people.

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

Current Challenges to food system in Ekiti/Ondo include:

- low income generated from food producers (farmers) as a result of enormous waste generated in processing

-high volume of wastes capable of contributing to environmental challenges

-lack of storage facilities resulting in wastage of food products

-disease outbreak (Typhoid and Cholera) from the uncontrolled disposal of food processing wastes.

- demand for the development of efficient and environmentally friendly food processing technologies

- non-integration of food processing waste in production processes as a key to more efficient and environmental friendly food processing

- non-recovery and exclusion of fiber from food by-products in the production of value added panels.

-lack of deep understanding of communicating languages between food producers and processors

Future challenges to food system in Ekiti/Ondo State will include:

- ways to develop of environmentally friendly packaging solutions for food products

- how to utilize non-biodegradable/non-compost-able plastics that are used in packaging of food.

- ways of mitigating the contribution of these packaging materials (plastics) to environmental challenges.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

My vision is to develop value added panel products from the use of food processing wastes (rice husk, groundnut shell, coconut husk, yam stem etc) and common weeds,  using food packaging wastes (plastic bags), cement and car battery case as binders, through the application of developed simple, innovative and adaptable technologies in the manufacturing processes. Such affordable value-added products can:

 - be used for core and low cost housing for low and high income earners in Urban and Rural communities worldwide.

-generate additional income for food producers (farmers) through the sales of food processing wastes

-utilize the wastes generated from food processing thereby minimizing environmental challenges and outbreak of diseases.

- result into the development of efficient and environmentally friendly food processing technologies

- provide suitable and environmentally friendly application for non-biodegradable/non-compostable plastics that are used in packaging of food.


High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

Capacity building in the utilization of food processing wastes, for the production of value added products will no doubt secure ecosystem biodiversity through enrichment plantation establishment and a quality environment conducive for good health, well-being and wellness of the people living in Ekiti/Ondo, improved productivity of fauna and flora resources. It will also improve the people's standard of living through the generation of income from the sales of food processing wastes.  It will also compliment the effort of reducing emission, forest degradation and deforestation and also support the realization of the National Sustainable Development Goals, a dream of the world. It will result into eradication of poverty, diseases and increased prosperity

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

The  world requires urgent and concerted efforts in the utilization of food processing wastes  economically to develop durable, efficient, available and affordable housing infrastructures for construction of low cost and core housing delivery, electronic industries, automobile industries etc., capable of providing an avenue to reduce pressure on the forests biodiversity; enriching forest resources; mitigate climate change; control of all form of erosion and flooding; and conservation of wildlife and fruit trees.

The realization of this vision will:

  • Increase farmer’s income and alleviate poverty;
  • Increase raw materials supplies for construction industries;
  • Create job opportunities for low and high income earners;
  • Increased food production;
  • Reduce pressure on forest resources biodiversity;
  • Develop innovative science and technology in engineering, architectural designs and building mega structures;
  • Produce innovations in products manufacturing, processing and utilization;
  • Mitigate climate change through the provision of value added panel that can favourably serve as substitute to sawn timber.


Food processing wastes that have been identified as suitable raw materials for the development of value added panel products include:

  • Yam stem.
  • Maize-stalk & Maize-cob.
  • Coconut fiber.
  • Coffee chaff.
  • Palm kennel fiber.
  • Cassava stem.
  • Banana stem residues
  • Rice husk
  • Ground nut shell

  • Water hyacinth etc.


The realization of this vision will support technological, institutional and policy changes that would trigger a lasting transformation of rural and urban economies. The project will empower rural populations (farmers and indigenous people) to improve their incomes in an environmentally sustainable manner through the sales of wastes derived from post-harvest processing and will complement the efforts of reducing harmful emission, combating forest degradation and deforestation. The realization will also solve environmental related issues by giving adequate consideration to the following important issues: loss of domestic and wild animals; loss of trees and shrubs; compaction and baking of the soil; loss of fishes and marine animals; inadequate percolation of water due to highly compacted soil surface; and blinding of land surfaces with constructions hindering water percolation.

Way to go. It will be awesome to have a technology to converts waste to durable materials for housing here in Nigeria. I came across such tech in recent past used in building homes in an African country. Can't recall which.
