River Cess with a coast line of 62k, and situated in the south east of Monrovia at a distance of 220km.

What country is your selected Place located in?

Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

The Queen and Peace Parish in Cestos city was established during the 80s by the Catholic Arch Diocese of Monrovia to carry out the spiritual and corporal work of the Catholic Church. The Government of Liberia went through an agreement with the church to set up a trend system for both the River Cess Health Center and the Government Central Elementary school. The agreement led to the River Cess Health Center to be renamed the St. Francis Health Center. After a protracted period of operations, the county experienced a great set back over a period of 15 years from the national civil war.

Since the uprising ended, the parishioners of the church and community dwellers are finding it difficult to rehabilitate the center, self reliance to carry out the purpose for the establishment of the mission.

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

Cestos City is the capital city of Rivercess County, Liberia. As of the 2008 national census, the population stood at 2,578. It received its original name Cestos from Portuguese traders in the early 16th century from the baskets that were produced and sold in the town. Cestos in Portuguese and Spanish means basket. Cestos City has a tropical weather, located in the southeastern potion of Liberia (costal zone). The mother tongue of the People is Bassa. The people are Friendlyloving, they are involve in agriculture and fishing. The people hope is to be self reliance in farming and finishing so that they can alleviate from poverty.

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

The actual challenge of the people is the lack of support to enable them undertake agricultural initiatives.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

Our Vision will provide means for the sustainability of communities dwellers.

To Create the environment for taking initiatives.

To help curtail the need for cassava and vegetable on the market.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

Create employment and reduce the number of vulnerable/disaffected youth who are victims of exploitation and violence.

Fight poverty among young people, to restore their dignity and self esteem in society and to equip youth with the skills to become self supported.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

The county is rich in terms of timber reserves and fishery, but has a very little road infrastructure. The mean livelihood activities today include palm oil, hunting, food crops production and fishing.

Acute and chronic malnutrition rates are alarmingly high. This in part could be explained by the geographical isolation of Cestos City which makes most households to be completely without access to improved drinking water and health facilities. Our Vision will help and encourage others cities and counties due to our interconnected cultural system to copy our agricultural initiative base on the positive impact on our community dwellers.
