Yopal is a city of Departamento del Casanare, in Colombia. It covers 2.771 km².
What country is your selected Place located in?
Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.
I selected Casanare because of its potential to be a part of new regenerative and nourishing visions for the Colombian beef system it has talented and hard-working inhabitants, extensive lands and resources like water, pastures and strategic location. This place is important to me because I worked there many years ago and am impressed with its vastness, landscape, and biodiversity. I am connected to it for more than 30 years ago when I started my professional life. Unfortunately, I had to leave due to violence during the '90s. Today can be the time to get back due to the peace process signed between Colombian guerrillas and President Santos in 2016, for which he won the Nobel Peace Prize that same year. On the other hand, I am working on a multidisciplinary, consumer-centered and systemic Ph.D. research about Bos indicus beef which is an important activity in that territory.

Casanare is located in the vast and rich eastern plains of Colombia
Casanare is a vast, unique, and biodiverse region of the eastern plains of Colombia (5° 21′ 0″ N, 72° 24′ 36″ W, mean temperature along the year is 26.3 oC or 79.34 oF, 350 m average height over sea level). Traditions of the inhabitants of Casanare are the mix of South American Indians, Spanish and African immigrants over the centuries. Music or “musica llanera”, is unique and one of the most important cultural manifestations and traditions. It is characterized by harp, “maracas”, and “cuatro” (a small Spanish guitar-like instrument) playing accompanied by singers and dancers describing many of the social, cultural, environmental, and historical aspects. Their diet is characterized mainly by grilled/soups of beef and fish, cooked green plantains, maize, cassava, and rice. People from that zone have been dedicated to the production of rice, maize, plantain, African oil palm, and associative artisan aquaculture projects. Despite its richness, food security (utilization) requires more organization for better diets, overweight and size delay occurrences in children have occurred (12.7% and 12.8% respectively). The main production activities are beef cattle (more than 2 million bovine heads), oil (about 20% of Colombian oil), coal, and cast for decades. Cattle production is based on extensive livestock systems characterized by low productivity and grazing requiring more than 3.5 million hectares causing deforestation, pressure over water sources and cycle, soil sources and land conflicts. Many Colombian territories have been struggled with armed groups for decades reducing the capacity to re-think and generate better social and productive models. After the peace agreement signed the Colombian government and the most dominant guerilla “Farc” in 2016, hope is leading the future of this region. Due to the territory´s physical majesty and beauty, new activities like Eco-tourism is becoming an important source of income. Peace consolidation not only with “Farc” but also the remaining violent groups such as narcotraffic organizations, corruption, weak management practices, low levels of superior education, low employment, environmental degradation and extreme events (droughts and extreme rainfalls) some of the associated to legal and illegal activities are the most Important transitions needed to positively impact the community. On the other hand, as many territories in Colombia, in Casanare is a clear differentiation between urban and rural development, in other words, the farther a town is from Yopal, the capital city, the less developed it is.

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.
Environment (En)+Diets (Di)+Economics (Ec)+Culture (Cu)+Technology(Tech)+Policy(Po) 2020: Expensive, low quality and high environmental impact of beef for consumers originated from the production to consumption chain due to intensive use and pollution of water, soil and air (GHG, solid waste, sewage, and deforestation).By 2050 it will need to ensure biodiversity, food security and consumer health based on a more regenerative and nourishing beef system.Di+En+Ec+Cu+Tech+Po2020: Percapita consumption of beef in Colombia is 18,2 Kg/Yr. About 10% of the total beef consumed is produced in Casanare. The beef system needs better management practices, i.e lack of diversity in animal protein consumption, long intermediaries chain and processing effects on quality. By 2050 it is expected for the Colombian population to grow from 45.5 million to 61 from. Meat and-meat like proteins will need to be more diverse, affordable, desirable, safe, nutritious, standardized, easily stored, processed, transported and consumed while reducing waste. Ec+En+Tech+Cu+Di+Po2020: Despite the rise of oil royalties, infrastructure, and food security strategies, socio-economic improvements (i.e 19.1% multidimensional poverty) face delay and carelessness explained mainly by corruption and weak management practices. 2050 will require a more collaborative management network along with the system´s stakeholders for administration and economic diversification for more sustainable, social, and profitable practices. Cu+Ec+En+Tech+Di+Po2020: Corruption/Narco/Violence/Illegal activities subcultures, against women violence (i.e in 2017 were 232 cases/100.000 inhabitants). weakening public and private management practices have been present for years. By 2050 new collaborative networks among public ministeries, academics, cattle´s men and consumers associations, will need to be engaged to design systemic policies for system transformation involving stakeholders

We´ll need to build new social and environmental scenarios. I´d start finding the right/credible/powerful allieds to work on culture implications and early success projects associated to my vision related to multiple stakeholders engagement networks for specific/interdisciplinary/systemic educational efforts towards common objectives, definition and encourage local/real/practical/solid changes achievement, short terms cost acceptance while pursuing long term/high level goals to structure collaborative management-technological networks, like cooperatives, formed by system´s stakeholders and population that permit to engage of academics, private companies, cattle´s men and consumer´s associations, public institutions (Agriculture, Health, Education, Communication, Infrastructure, Finance, Work, Energy, Environment, Culture, Technology and Commerce ministries), and waste recycle organizations to accomplish adjustments of desirable/feasible/viable/empathic food system policies, more efficient corruption control, reduction of inequality along beef system stakeholders, reduction of “machismo” and improvement of women´s leadership, capability, and added value in the beef system; increased value and consumption of local sustainable meat like (Tasteful/nutritious) foods; innovation in products and processes, entrepreneurship; education plans and actions to pursue better integration of whole system, mitigation and adaptation to climate changes, resilience to disasters and vulnerability reduction, soil health and restoration, better use of soil destined to cattle production, carbon capture and sequestration strategies, water and air pollution prevention, sewage treatment, forest pasture alternatives, collective land possession, biodiversity conservation; malnutrition reduction. Sustainable/healthy dietary patterns, consumer studies to find meat alternatives. Strengthening of urban-rural linkages for sustainable development for both, more efficient food chain links in transport, wholesaling, retailing, food processing and vending, Industrial ecology moving from a traditional linear system to a circular production system, increase support for education in rural and rural communities, economic diversification structures, fewer subsidies for fossil fuel use. Research and development on technologies to manage waste and pollution ( like biorefineries or clean energy production), sewage and air, and micronutrient loss in high added-value products and intermediate technologies; Artificial intelligence in real-time and historical data software for mobile devices to forecasting, future casting, and precision services of environmental issues, cattle production (water/soil/land use), commercialization, retail, cooking, waste management, processing, and diets.
High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.
The place will be more bio-organized, more green, more biodiverse (pollinators must be protected), surrounded by healthy air, water, the soil where healthy animals, plants and humans will prosper. A place where meats (beef, fish and poultry and meat-like products) will be classified under local quality seals and origin denomination. On the other hand, lives will be based on a vision that permits planetary purposes, objectives, and goals, a new focus that commits to understand more the businesses that can be done On land instead those that are done With land to reduce environmental, land, and wellbeing conflicts, there will be more conscious about “the others”, more engaged, informed, healthy, creative, participative, productive, and autonomous lives.
Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?
The vision addresses the six interconnected themes: Environment, Diets, economics, Culture, Technology, and Policy by collaborative management networks conformed by local people/stakeholders that can address individual and specific challenges along with the beef system into systemic thinking. To be informed by people engaged with the food and agriculture in the place, I propose to make personal interviews and direct observation of their belives, behavior, needs, hopes, impacts and added value activities throughout the beef system. I will use storytelling methodology to inform and instigate change towards the vision for education, government, intermediaries, consumer and waste management organizations healthy discourse is also imperative to know their opinions and receive feedback on how to improve future actions. My vision is aligned to a systemic approach because it considers where I am, where I want to go, and what I need to do to reach defined goals, considering beef system boundaries, and multiple stakeholder's challenges, wth strategic actions to solve them. My vision considers stakeholder´s functions, impacts, and the way they can be correlated to address challenges to reach the goals for a more regenerative and nourishing beef system by 2050. My vision has the potential to transform the beef system as a part of a local food strategy based on the improvement of sustainable practices by stakeholder´s empowerment in a transversal and longitudinal way along the beef system not only to prevent and address environmental challenges but those associated to the other elements such as to promote future food security including climate and ecosystem-friendly production, intermediation, processing and consumption methods by local participation and community actions (Blay-Palmer et al., 2018). I hope these practices can catalyze change/transitions towards sustainability as mentioned by Almered (2019). My vision is a community rooted because it encourages local engagement and participation to become the main beneficiaries of their own work to steering creativity for a systemic and better future. My vision is aligned to being inspirational because it considers humans and only humans as the main factor to change their own lives based on the right focus. My vision proposes and will show a creative “pandora´s box” that will be motivating many others to think and act from the focus, and soon a vision becomes reality.
