Lima's population is very varied, as it is mostly made up of immigrants from all over Peru, who have brought with them different cultural expressions, including gastronomic ones, which have enriched Lima´s landscape.  As Limeños, but above all as Peruvians, our cuisine is a source of pride, it identifies us as a society and unites us.

For Peruvians, Lima is considered the city of opportunities, since all the powers of the State, the economy and the best public services of the country are concentrated in it. Lima is the reference of development for all the populations of the interior of the country.

However, there is overpopulation, disorderly urban development, insecurity and the living conditions of a large part of the population are not the most suitable for the development of a healthy society. For us, it is necessary that we Limeños live in a more equitable and empathetic environment, where opportunities are equally available to all sectors of the population.  To achieve this, we are committed to innovative education methods beginning in early childhood, which will bring about the change we need in order to have an informed population.

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

Peru is a country centralized in its capital, Lima: a complex city, with very marked differences and which receives the largest national immigration.

Although the idea of Lima speaks of a large urbanized and developed metropolis, we also find rural, agricultural and agro-industrial areas in landscapes that range from coastal areas, deserts to snow-capped mountains above 4000 meters above sea level.  We also find a variety of economic activities related to the food system, such as fishing, aquaculture, livestock and small-scale agriculture to agro-industry and agro-export.

People inmigrate to Lima looking for a better life with more opportunities, access and possibilities of development.

It is a city with great diversity and different realities in which a little piece of each region of Peru is found.  Lima encompasses customs, traditions and knowledge from all over the country,

Thanks to the gastronomic boom, preparations, customs, traditional knowledge and inputs from all over the country were put in value, recognized and applauded locally and worldwide. Also, the use of some ancestral ingredients in our food has been recovered.

Unfortunately, we have not yet managed to get the population to identify and recognize the value of this local knowledge and inputs and the relationship between food and personal and collective well-being, the conservation of biodiversity and the health of our ecosystems for the future.

The relationship with food has not improved over the years, despite the gastronomic boom the population does not have reliable information on nutrition and this is reflected in the high rates of anemia, malnutrition, overweight and obesity in the population at the national level.

This is a cycle of poor nutrition that is not related to purchasing power, age, gender or region, making it a major public health problem.

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.


- Although the great diversity that Peru possesses represents great value at the natural and cultural level, it also represents a challenge when it comes to generating consensus, development plans or specialized programs to the realities of the different regions.

- Serious problems of malnutrition in more than 50% of the population - obesity, malnutrition and anemia - generated by a sick society

- There is no connection (in terms of information and actions) between the role of the final consumer and the effect of their decisions on biodiversity conservation.

- Deficient educational system, which homogenizes the population, therefore its needs and potential. It does not provide relevant education on issues such as food, biodiversity, the environment, citizenship and well-being.

- Lack of access to reliable information, which educates the consumer on issues of biodiversity, environment, health and welfare.

- Due to all these problems, we currently have a large number of citizens who, not having received a good diet from early childhood, have not developed their full potential, having grown up at a disadvantage.

- Lack of interest by the government for research and development in all fields relevant to our food system.


- Lack of access and availability of water for basic needs and food production.

- Loss of traditional knowledge.
- Current problems (increased migration, more natural disasters, increased vulnerability) will worsen.

- If the system hasn't changed, another generation will have been lost.

- Increased rates of anemia and malnutrition, and chronic non-communicable diseases.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

Attacking the problem with education.  Inserting a food education methodology into the National school curriculum, which makes learning organic and in accordance with the needs of the student at each stage of development.  Additionally, that it can be replicated in other parts of the country.

By generating content, activities and experiences that raise awareness and awaken curiosity in learning, we seek to generate a change in paradigms: children who access this program develop critical and analytical thinking and become participatory actors in society and its processes. As future consumers, they will be able to make decisions according to their reality and the challenges of the food system.  

To establish ourselves as an articulator of sustained information and advice to public and private entities, teachers and caretakers of these enterprises so that they can function as multipliers of knowledge with their clients and students.

To insert training for teachers in topics relevant to food education so that it can be transmitted to students efficiently.

To be able to advise the QaliWarma and CunaMás programs, state programs that include early childhood caretakers.

Finally, to build food citizenship for the well-being of future generations.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

By 2050 we hope to have citizens who have developed their full potential, who have not suffered the burden of malnutrition and its physical and cognitive consequences. Who have received a well deserved quality education that is relevant and in line with the needs of a changing world.

We hope to see a city articulated with consumers who are aware of their role in the productive food chain and who assume their responsibility with their body and the environment when choosing their diet correctly.

People who consume food thinking about the whole productive food chain: taking into account the environmental impacts, the conservation of biodiversity, the role of the producer, the importance of knowledge and the capacity to criticize products of dubious origin.

To have a state capable of generating policies that promote healthy eating and well-being and that people with fewer resources can benefit from our food biodiversity and access reliable information.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

We believe in the transformation of the food system from within, where the actors are the generators of change. We believe education is the main and most powerful tool to acheive this.

Where people have within their reach, the minimum necessary for optimal development, by valuing our diversity and the knowledge associated with it.

We seek to generate food citizenship: a population that understands and recognizes the real scope of involvement and decision making about food.  Of consuming real, healthy, fresh and seasonal food; that understands that eating is a political and powerful act, that values its ingredients, natural resources and preparations as well as the knowledge and technology that accompanies them.

We understand ourselves as the facilitating entity that integrates the information generated by public and private entities, in order to democratize their access and generate new information, and seeks synergy in order to achieve positive changes in the food system to reach the optimal development of future generations.
