Dattabot is one of Indonesia’s prominent Big Data Analytics company with a focus on data integration. Since 2010, Dattabot has been harnessing the power of big data technology to provide an innovative solution to clients from various industries; from FMCG, financial institutions, to government institutions. Sierad Produce, a poultry hatcheries company, is one of Dattabot’s partners and requested to have a traceability system to monitor their production and marketing purpose. Dattabot is providing solutions to this problem by creating procurement tools and monitoring dashboards for Sierad Produce. Using blockchain-technology by HARA, a brainchild of Dattabot, wherein this project, its blockchain dashboard system will be used to store all the information about the whole cycle of production.

Sierad Produce, a poultry hatcheries company, is our partner in this project where it requested to have a traceability system to monitor their production and marketing purpose. Dattabot is providing solutions to this problem by creating procurement tools and monitoring dashboards for Sierad Produce. 

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

Located in Parung, West Java, Indonesia, the Sierad Produce’s slaughtering facilities are among the most modern and hygienic in Indonesia. The facilities and processes are Halal and ISO 9001-certified. Sierad produce has a slaughtering capacity of over 8,000 chickens per hour. The complex process involves scalding, plucking and eviscerating, cutting, deboning and chilling or freezing. Sierad Produce strives to optimize its profits by continuously creating added value through the entire value chain of primary and further processing. Sierad Produce ensures that all its processes and procedures conform to the Halal requirements.  

Sierad Produce takes pride in the quality of its dressed chicken and further processed products, and for which it has become the “supplier of choice” for the overwhelming majority of international franchised fast-food chains operating in Indonesia. The facilities itself is surrounded by mostly industrial sites and residential area.  

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

Indonesia as the largest populated Muslim country, a nation home to more than 12% of the world’s Muslims, has the need for trustworthiness from their faith values to benefit the consumer movement as it is non-negotiable, thus, most food you can find in Indonesia’s markets are labeled “Halal”. Over the years, articles and news on scandals about meat products being contaminated with untraceable and unmonitored suspicious additives are seen globally. Some meat certified as halal was found to contain pork DNA, which horrified the Muslims. The theory of halal inspection and certification offered a framework for improving the authenticity of halal meat, and the monitoring of halal meat looked to have something positive and healthy to offer the wider consumer market.  

In Sierad Produce, a halal-certified poultry hatcheries production company in Indonesia, tracking systems still record production data manually, causing a redundant, double-entry, and repetitive recording and reporting mechanisms. Within the systems in the company, it does not serve data integration from the initial entry of goods to the loading dock and grading carcasses. Therefore, the whole system cannot yet display process monitoring, performance monitoring, and general information that can be accessed by the public, not capturing halal traceability during a halal production process.  


These challenges that separate halal production processes and integrated data systems can bring ambiguity to consumers, where halal requires a greater level of inspection of the quality and provenance of products. In theory, halal integrate animal welfare and care at every step of the supply chain, something that not only Muslims but others feel would be beneficial to society more broadly. For example, Islamic slaughter demands that the blood of an animal is totally depleted from the corpse, resulting in better and fresher meat, free from bacteria. Where around 87.2% of the Indonesian population identifying themselves as Muslims, there is a space where technologies, certification, and the greater scrutiny that halal products could bring a wider benefit to society. This is where Indonesia’s Muslims believe that their Islamic value can improve processes by showing the transparent information about the production to the consumers, at the same time, expanding their target markets.  

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

With these challenges occur in the halal production process, our team has come up with an idea to build an integrated record system to realize traceability in the Halal Production Process based on the blockchain system. This digital data is easier to integrate into the system, it reduces the possibility of human error, and it is time effective. For the employees working at the Sierad Produce, this will be a transformative game-changing action. With the current system, the production team uses hard-copy forms to input production data in each process and report to the data team and send the report to the next process of production, and these data are collected monthly. By using the monitoring dashboard from our team, the Sierad team will be able to input the data every day dan it will be automatically updated, thus the report will be real-time.   


Our team will provide four key platforms including (1) Data Input Automation, a mobile web as an interface used for data collection, requesting responses in each process, and quick action calls. It starts by checking the product in the loading dock and ends at the labeling of grading and product shipping destinations, all this information will be put on the mobile web.  (2) External Halal Traceability Site is where the public can easily access the general information about the products. A consumer can trace the information about his/her product as easy as scanning the blockchain QR code. From there, all the information about the origin of the produce, how it was treated and fed, date and time the produce went through all the processes are available on this site.  


(3) Internal Monitoring Dashboard and Analytics provides intuitive visualization and alerts the management team in making production improvement decisions quickly and effectively for future decision making. The general statistics page presents key data that shows performance and statistical highlights that indicate the completion of the determined halal process. While there is a Halal Tracker that generates the detail processes that occur in each batch of products that are processed in accordance with the provisions of the halal process policy. Lastly, (4) The Blockchain Package Services are the system that sustains the Data Input Automation including traceability information of a product with a detailed description, date, and time in the form of a network graph. 


Aside from that, with a wider consumer market to offer halal products, this is a space where faith and modernity can be combined. It offers the opportunity to contribute to improved consumption and sustainability for a wider consumer audience. Where halal produce focus is put on sanitation and cleanliness based on religion, and the animals must be treated well and given healthy clean feeds. With such activities and information being transparent, it is expected that halal meat will be not just for Muslims but for others as well.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

With these challenges addressed, Sierad Produce will have a transformative and positive shift within the company. Environmentally, by having an internal monitoring dashboard, Sierad will be able to track how much waste they have produced, and their consumers are also able to trace where the waste actually goes.  


The Halal culture in Indonesia is strong, therefore, it ensures the work of laborers in the facilities cannot be 100% mechanized. The human factor has to be present during the process, in practice, a prayer must be spoken at the commencement of slaughtering in the processing plant; the person supervising the slaughtering process must be a Muslim, and the processing plant has to accredited by the local Muslim cleric. Halal is a space for self-expression where faith and modernity can be combined, our team uses high technology system to trace information about the product, on the other hand, it still maintains a human-supervised production.  


By providing training and digitized platforms for data collection and visualization, workers within the company will be more educated and used to the digitalized system. Thus, using less paper for their data collection, reducing waste within the company, making it more sustainable than ever.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

With the tracked waste system within the company is traceable and transparent, it is expected that by 2050, our system will be able to determine the quality of Sierad Produce. For instance, there were cases where processed foods came from poultry’s waste, such as chicken blood. In the Halal terms, Muslim slaughter insists that the blood is completely drained from the carcass, producing healthier and fresher meat-free from contamination caused by bacteria growth. Aside from that, poultry waste, if not being treated and processed, disposed to the river are bad for its environment where water plants and algae cannot grow. With enough data, the system will know whether Sierad produces and treat their waste well. Creating a healthy and sustainable environment in the surrounding area.  


The Halal Traceability program does its job end to end. Currently, Indonesia opens its market to chicken import, mostly from Brazil, whose poultry production is one of the world’s largest. With value-added points to the Sierad Produce products, and improved quality within the company’s effectiveness, where each process’ margin and efforts are being automatically calculated and analyzed, it is possible that Indonesia will be able to export poultry products to overseas and not being dependent on import products with better quality.  


On the other hand, our team promotes the livestock farmers within the community, where we can ensure that these farmers can maintain their job while working with high-technology systems, increasing their knowledge towards technology. Farmers will be able to work towards a better quality of poultry products, with transparent and traceable data, they will work fairly and honestly, empowering themselves.  


In the end, the Halal Traceability project ensures Sierad Produce’s waste processing goes well, high-quality poultry products, efficient and effective productivity within the facilities, maintain the current local farmers' job as partners of the company, and a fair distributed margin throughout the player of the project. By 2050, it is expected that our team’s vision for a regenerative and sustainable halal food future will be a reality.
