Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.
was born in Bukavu, I grew up there and I know the environment very well. Having carefully studied the different economic spheres of the region, I noticed a deficit in terms of food and economics in general. We import more than we produce, the big firms and big customers interested in our agricultural products deal with the big landowners, buy them almost all their production and bring it back in the form of finished products (corn flour, rice, ground coffee) at 5,10 times more expensive than the gross product. thus creating uselessness for the small producer who finds himself with almost worthless production and is forced to sell it at a very low price. To remedy this problem, for 5 years I have decided to make a contribution by creating a harvest bank, we bring together more than 400 small farmers in 20 agricultural cooperatives to increase the volume of harvest (high productivity).
<< As small scale farmers couldn't export their production,we bring them expertise to process their products and facilitate links to worldwide consumers >>.
Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.
Bukavu, formerly Costermansville or Costermansstad, is a city in the Democratic Republic of Congo located on the southwest shore of Lake Kivu and the capital of the province of South Kivu. The city has about 1 012 053 inhabitants. Bukavu is adjacent to the Rwandan city of Cyangugu. The inhabitants of Bukavu are called "Bukavien", they are welcoming and helpful in the face of foreigners.
Typical Bukavian meals are bean rice, foufou (corn leg) with fish or goat, cow or chicken meat. Griades are also popular in Bukavu.
The most used means of transport are the boat, motorcycle, vehicle.
The Bukavian lives on small businesses of all kinds and mining. Little producer on the agricultural level, the Bukavian almost completely depends on other cities and dddddes foreign countries to feed from where the great potential of food in the region.
What is the estimated population (current 2020) in your Place?
Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.
CongoFresh group Limited being made up of members (peasants) who for the most part have not had enough schooling, the challenge we are currently facing and which could be topical in 2050 is complex:
Technological challenge: we need a capacity in terms of managing an industrial production (modern machine, internet tools ).
Economic and environmental challenge: productivity going to relatively slow growth at the level of small farmers (main cause: lack of solidarity between small farmers, which makes their production cost 5 times cheaper in certain corners of the region). On the environmental level, until 2050 we need to make a lot of effort to generalize the application of good agricultural practices to increase agricultural productivity and ensure its sustainability in the region.
Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.
To face these challenges, CongoFresh group Limited sets up a "harvest bank" system,
knowing that the word "bank" is likely to cause confusion to our kind and attentive readers, we explain: it is not a money bank but a central point for collecting crops.
not a traditional bank (deposit counter and cash withdrawal) but harvest deposit warehouses and cash withdrawal counters. money. That is to say: small farmers are registered and then divided into agricultural cooperatives according to their area of production. They deposit their harvest during the season (3 months) at the harvest bank. CongoFresh group Limited receives the crops, weighs them, transforms them (added value) ensures the sale and returns gives money back to the farmers, money to be distributed monthly. So farmers have a salary around 6 times higher than their expectations in the past.
High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.
The greatest testimony is the economic recovery and the change of life of our 400 current members,. Starting from an income of -20 USD / month to 200 USD / month, progress is continuous and our goal is to educate more farmers to increase the volume of crops to be processed, create more wealth to share with other farmers for improve their standard of living.
Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?
our vision will ensure until 2050 and beyond 2050.
the philosophy of our vision makes it possible to make it sustainable since the beneficiaries (small farmers) are also the main actors in the functioning of the vision.
our food vision allowing them to earn money from their harvest, no need to read or to pay a membership fee. here the only condition is to cultivate "organic" and be a member of an agricultural cooperative. because we know that the strength is in the union especially when one is regarded as weak.
Our vision for the sustainability of a promising and beneficial agriculture for all is that of having a focus primarily oriented towards the "base", and for food, the base is the raw product and before the raw product, we see the producer , the least seen of all, the first in the supply chain.
On the environmental level, we demand from our cooperatives, that all production is "organic" and respectful of good agricultural practices (our agronomists make sure). All this to allow these farmers to have soil in good condition and to perpetuate their agricultural activity.
Our economic model is a federative community system which has made it possible to employ 400 farmers to date and the number will grow as we evolve.
On the economic level, our Harvest Bank is firstly a unique economic model in the whole region and a better example of added value (economic recovery).400 small farmers who made almost nothing but left from -20 $ to 200 $.
