Your Selected Place: what’s the name of the Place you’re developing a Vision for?

ZIMBABWE

What country is your selected Place located in?

ZIMBABWE

Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

Lifewalk Foundation is a youth organization found in Zimbabwe by young people from across the country united to address socio-economic and political issues facing the nation. We understand the food system challenges that are faced in Zimbabwe and the uncertain future if innovative food systems are not employed. Zimbabwe is a country that has a lot of arable land which can be exploited to feed the whole continent, it is also an area where our families, culture evolve around.

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

Zimbabwe is a rich country in minerals, arable land, and culture and tourism industry. Zimbabweans from years back are considered to be in sync with nature, giving as much as they take from the land. From the earliest known inhabitants, this place has been best known for two major lines of production that is mining and agriculture. They are considered to be the best industrious people in Southern Africa. For some time, before the 21st century it used to produce food for themselves and export to the whole African region. Its climate is very favorable for agriculture and during off seasons farmers can leverage on irrigation farming. There is a dry season, including a short cool season during the period May to September when the whole country has very little rain. The rainy season is typically a time of heavy rainfall from November to March. It also has a population of 14,771,437 and the food production levels are worrisome.

What is the approximate size of your Place, in square kilometers? (New question, not required)

390757

What is the estimated population (current 2020) in your Place?

14771437

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

Currently, 34% of the 14 million Zimbabwean population is under abject poverty due to contraction in agricultural production, high rate of unemployment, rapid rise in cost of basic commodities as well as electrical power shortages. In addition, environmental pollution which is being caused by the lack of proper waste management practices and rise in human consumption of non-organic food products that are toxic to human health has resulted in many diseases such as cholera, obesity, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

Zimbabwe’s problem is lack of self-sustainable farming practices that has resulted in food shortages and rise in consumption of unhealthy and inorganic food products. Lifewalk team is introducing the Hexagon Self-Sustainable Production Plan for farmers, governments, NGOs e.t.c to put into practice and experience a high increase in production of healthy agricultural products. The Hexagon Production Plan is a six way production cycle that involves poultry, piggery, fishery, bee rearing, energy production & organic crop production; these projects are interdependent, zero waste and they minimize farm production costs. Hexagon Business Model ensures that there are six sources of income (projects) that are mutually beneficial to each other, that is ¾ of the sources (projects) must not only contribute revenue to the business but also raw materials to the next project reducing inputs cost by 60%.In Zimbabwe there hasn’t been any farming production practice like ours that maximizes in exploiting natural synergies, giving the market more than six agricultural products cheaply.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

In a 5 year plan, the model ensures maximum production of food that will be in surplus for export from the country. This will help the health of many Zimbabweans and eliminate poverty due to massive employment creation that comes with the implementation of this project. Adoption of the plan by government, farmers and NGOs will play a vital role in educating the nation on sustainable farming practices. Also the contribution of the model in policy making will be of paramount importance.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

The Hexagon Production Model is a six-way production cycle that involves poultry, piggery, fishery, plastic recycling, energy production & organic crop production; these projects are interdepended, zero waste and they minimize farm production costs. It ensures that there are six sources of income (projects) that are mutually beneficial to each other, that is ¾ of the sources (projects) must not only contribute revenue to the business but also raw materials to the next project reducing inputs cost by 60%. Once the implementation of the Hexagon Production Model starts, the project will start realizing sells from chicken, horticultural products, floor polish sales, and plastic manufacturing in 6-14 weeks from the start date, because the system has been developed in such a way that at any given time there would be a product ready for the market i.e during the six-month time for pigs & chicken layers growth or maturation,  broilers can be sold weekly because they mature in 6 weeks, and also vegetables can be harvested from 6 weeks and other crops maturing in 3 months; living energy generation without season. The full cycle would be completed in nine months giving the opportunity to break even in 32 months on a 3-hectare land, due to the 60% less production cost involved supplying 200 000+ customers and the project is expected to scale from 3 hectares to 27 hectares in 5 years, also the interdependency property reduces overall farm operating costs i.e. fewer power costs, fewer fertilizer costs, less fish food

hi Panashe: Good afternoon from India. Nice submission. will love to learn if your farmers are facing water shortage in summer and winter? Are they having their rainy period crops disturbed due to water logging or flood in monsoon period? If yes then we will love to help you. For last 30 years we are working in this subject. we are helping our smallholders with our World Bank, UNFCCC, Securing Water for Food (USAID) and Millennium Alliance (DFID) awarded innovation BHUNGROO which saves farmers from drought and flood, doubles farmers income and improves soil fertility. Will love to give you our innovation BHUNGROO. It will be our poor farmers' gift for your farmers. We can guarantee the result within 1 year. we are currently helping more than 100000 farming families across India, SEAsia, EAsia & Africa. We have also designed Youth Climate Leaders and Women Climate Leaders programs. I am sure both will add strength to your endeavor.
We also applauded your entry. Will appreciate your feedback on our entry ""Antodaya" through Food".
