Your Selected Place: what’s the name of the Place you’re developing a Vision for?

The Netherlands, covers an area of 41.000 km2. The land is a big delta of Europe, in which a lot of water coming from other EU Countries.

We are living and working in this place.

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

After we constructed floating wetlands to combat poor water quality and produce oil and softboards, we came to a vision to produce also food with floating wetlands. By climate change we have to adopt to larger rains and disintegration of rural soils to produce food. By constructing floating wetlands we are able to produce food. We use the nutrient rich water to produce. Of course we add modern technical features like robotics. This is wat the pictures says. We construct floating wetlands in such a way that the platforms move around in such a way, that a robotically harvest the crop. In the picture are fruits shown, so that is why we came on the name FruitRaft. This can help rural farmers to produce food in a sustainable way. Floating wetlands will become a future trend! Perhaps it is even possible that farmers have land with long ditches in which the floating wetlands are embedded. They help to store large rain floods and produce food at the same time. Even further, perhaps it is possible that after the crops can be harvest, the wetlands can be shipped by a boat from the rural to the urban location to sell the products by the farmer. This instead of trucking the food to warehouses and supermarkets. This delivers super fresh food! Direct from the plants.

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

The environment is getter poor. The diet of the people is getting worse. We have also to combat climate change and we have to go to a sustainable future. In The Netherlands we have to combat more and more problems according to climate change because we get more an more problems with raising sea level and more water coming from other countries to the lands. Also we face a problem with lowering agriculture land, caused by peaty land that is lowering. Netherlands becomes wetter and wetter, so we need more storage of all that water. This leads to a potential good agriculture method by changing to grow crops on floating wetlands!

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

Because we have to face problems with more and more water, FruitRaft can help to cope with this problem. In The Netherlands we have to much N and P in the water, but it is perfect to use to grow crops. This improves also the water quality, so fish can flourish better and better so also fish can be produces to harvest good proteins for human. Netherlands is not a country in which people eat a lot of fish, so perhaps this helps a shift in diet for the people.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

We farm on land. Also we go with boats to the ocean for fish. FruitRaft is a new modern concept which changes this a lot! We do not have to go to the ocean for fish and decrease the production of crops on the land. Land is scare in The Netherland, but we have a lot of water....This can changes peoples mind and entrepreneurship by changing producing food with FruitRaft.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

here a spin-off according to the FruitRaft concept. The nutrient rich sediment is taking out of the water (leaving better water quality) and put in a manure separator. In this manure separator the solid and the thin fraction of the manure is separated. Also the solid sediment is added to the solid fraction. The water/thin fraction to the liquid fraction of the manure. The thin fraction is pumped into a basin, in which duckweed is grown. This protein rich plant can be used as food for cows. Than no longer soya has to be imported from south America to feed the cattle. This helps indirect to stop destroying the rain forest. The solid fraction can be used to fertilize the land to grow grass for the cows or other crops. This helps to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers. A lot of chemical fertilizers in The Netherlands is made from natural gas's!

Martin Voorma I think the idea you are presenting with FruitRaft is very interesting and could probably help in some extent to solve the problems you describe. Do you have any data of the changes in water quality over time? How can you validate those changes, what type of testing of the water quality can you do?
