Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

Ugenya constituency happens to be my rural home,I am from the Luo community which resides in the area and found in the western parts of Kenya,Nyanza. My parents and great grandparents resided in the constituency and my retirement home is also located within the region.

Over the years i have been stricken with the poverty levels for the region that seem not to change over the years .Dispite most households having agriculture productive land, food insecurity is high will malnutrition evident in most households .

Having received a decent education and worked for reputable multinational organizations that empower small holder farmers across Kenya including Agics East Africa, Opportunity International, Small Holder development Organization and Sun Culture and being the founder of Fresh Farm Africa, i want to use my experiences and background to create a lasting solution that will address the various food insecurity challenges that my people face through your comprehensive program.

What is the approximate size of your Place, in square kilometers? (New question, not required)

What is the estimated population (current 2020) in your Place?

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

In Siaya County, 37% of the county’s population is food insecure with about 58% rural inhabitants living below the absolute poverty Ugenya faces different challenges most notable:

•Nutrition challenges- crop diversification is yet to take place with majority of household’s choosing Maize sorghum and millet which are mainly starches. Lack of adequate proteins, vitamin sources is evident in the constituency with most children suffering from deficiency related diseases such as Kwashiorkor.

•Inadequate Access to quality seedlings and fertilizer including comprehensive Agronomy advice to ensure commercial farming. This has made small holder farmers to stick to what they know best, growing Maize sorghum and millet for household consumption.

•Lack of proper Access to Markets for farm produce has led to fear in indulging into horticulture production. This is characterized by broken supply chains that have seen small holder farmers suffer at the hand of brokers.

•Lack of cold storage facilities within the area and lack of proper methods/ skills of storage that has led to farm produce go to waste at the expense of small holder farmers. •Lack of Logistical support that would have seen Aggregation of produce, provision of transport facilitation from regions of crop production to regions of consumer’s needs.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

•Enhance Freshfarms Africa seeks to provide a platform that will allow Small Holder farmers within Ugenya constituency to indulge in economically viable crop production activities mainly within the horticulture space by ensuring access to seeds, fertilizer, and agronomy advice at production stage .This will be facilitated by our state of the art Mobile App that will send texts and notifications to farmers prompting them on the next point of action as per the crop they have chosen to cultivate. Farmers will be allowed to SMS the organization which will prompt open tickets and call backs will be made.

•Fresh farm will facilitate stand by Agronomists and community mobilizers who will go round to small holder farms to see progress. With use of our CRM (client relationship management APP) we will be in a position to monitor progress of farmer and assist on next way forward

•With the help of weekly farmer forums, the Farmer engagement officers (trained agronomists) will be in a position to gather information and offer advice and extension services which will include pest and disease control, machinery leases for sprays packs.

•On Harvesting Fresh farm seeks to develop cold storage facilities that will allow for packaging while sourcing for product markets. At this Level, the farmer is paid 50 to 100% for farm produce on delivery. This will ensure a steady income weekly for most of these farmers if crop production of crops such as Kales (Skuma wiki) cabbages, local vegetables, capsicum, tomatoes, onions is adopted. At such a point, if a credit facility was provided, then repayments would begin at this level.

•Fresh farm will create market Links through recruitment of Vendors/groceries in urban centers, use of a consumer APP to get clients for delivery purposes. This ensures a constant Market link for farmers all year through.

•Fresh farm leverages on IT through its mobile based Apps that is used as a marketing tool to locate consumers within urban centers. Alternatively Vendors are in a position to make orders and get deliveries within designated spots at affordable and market rate prices.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

•By creating a comprehensive end to end value addition chain highlighted above fresh farm Africa will be in a position to: ensure a steady flow incomes for smallholder farmers and creation of a steady way of life through farming. Most households living below poverty lines will be empowered.

•Enhance FreshFarms Africa will address malnutrition issues within households in Ugenya constituency by encouraging Horticulture production ,this way families will have access to different variety of foods and can use fresh farm for an exchange program of crops which will be a facility introduced for these farmers.

•With access to different Vendors across the country and a consumer base through our Fresh farm stores App a steady market will be available for the small holder farmer produce

•Fresh farm seeks to establish cold storage facilities within its areas of operation making Ugenya one of these locations. We would also act as an Aggregator consolidating different farm products, storing, repackaging and redistributing to markets across the country. This will help address the Logistics nightmare that farmers are currently experiencing. In summary this network of Small Holder farmers, agronomists, Mobile technology and access to markets through links to vendors and consumers will help set a more stable end to end supply chain network and lead to food security in the future.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

Our vision is to create a world were smallholder farmers are empowered towards practicing sustainable agriculture and  production activities and ensuring a constant supply of fresh and quality farm produce to persons across the continent.

This we will do by developing life changing technology that addresses the day to  day challenges of the   small Holder farmers Across Kenya and Africa.

At EFFA we endeavor to develop a continuous relationship with Small Holder farmers through ICT and farmer engagement officers, provide relevant and real time information to these farmers including commodity pricing, Demands patterns and seasons, Agronomy advice while enabling us to plan well on Harvest seasons and create ready markets for the farm produce.

We are also developing an elaborate Logistics network that includes transportation, cold storage and Access to markets via Mobile App that will enable a continuous source of income to small Holder farmers and constant supply of fresh farm produce to market demands .

we also want to enable farmers access services, utilities and alternative products through our farmer link by trading one commodity to another without cash facilitation.commonly  know in Africa as Barter trade on a transparent platform as we support the Logistics.

Ugenya Constituency makes a perfect platform to kick start such a comprehensive pilot program and create possibilities for scale. This will be done through our mission which is to leverage on Information Technology to create a platform that creates a sustainable End to End value chain addition to small holder farmer and link to markets for farm produce through creation of easy accessibility to farm products , and focusing on affordable and stable pricing models.
