  • Under 1 year

Lead Applicant: In what city or town are you located?

Kaduna State/City

Lead Applicant: In what country are you located?

Nigeria

Your Selected Place: what’s the name of the Place you’re developing a Vision for?

Gubachi, a rural area predominantly agrarian/farmer community in Northern part of Kaduna State in Nigeria. It covers an area of 241 km²

What country is your selected Place located in?

Nigeria

Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

I selected this place because I have been farming and sourcing food crops from this community for about 4 years now. The place is so important to me because it has given me so much from the farming activities I have engaged myself and colleagues in across the community, which is when I realized the residents of this community lack some basic needs despite representing a huge percentage of our market share, i.e. the farmers and their families of women and children produce most of our food crops but they happen to gain a tiny percent of the final sale value from the crops being produced by them from their communities. Hence, I decided to take it upon myself to see that the narrative changes for the people I have shared amazing moments with.

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

The place plays an important role in the production and encouragement of agriculture, farming and grazing. They have a fertile land and streams. With an Area of 241 km². Dominant tribes include Hausa and Fulani. Their cultural tradition is grazing animals and farming staple crops like rice, maize, soybeans, tomato, sorghum, beans and other vegetables. They are a rural area where children lack access to education centers and facilities close by. There’s a low government presence there which leaves most children at school appropriate age at home engaged in child labor on farms or sometimes transported to engage in begging activities locally referred to as Almajiri. They experience three seasons year round namely; rainy which is mostly from May thru September, cold breeze from November till January and sunny dry season from February till April. Agriculture plays a key role to this place as it serves as mostly their source of income, source of food for their own communities, the residents are predominantly farmers and animal herders. However the local farmers tend to lack access to quality farm inputs and good agricultural practices if left on their own due to lack of resources. This affects their food quality, yields and income. They mostly depend on farming intervention like ours to get access to quality farm inputs, necessary resources, training on best practices and access to premium markets to maximize margin. There are some slight cases of lack of balanced diet expecially for young children and the most vlnerable old aged across the community. They are faced with malnutrition as a result of the meals they are known for most of the time. They regular food at this place is widely known as Tuwo which is made from grinded cereal crops such as maize, sorghum and beans. They lack access to fruits and fresh vegetables for their local consumption.

What is the estimated population (current 2020) in your Place?

46720

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

Today Food security is one of the biggest challenges facing rural development. Giving the population the means to grow their own food, produce more, or by providing better access to it, thinking of better land use, and sustainable agriculture are key factors which contribute to the challenge of food security. Lack of development initiatives across the place continue to pose a threat to the success of this area. A challenge is illiteracy and digital divide in these areas where people don’t have access to affordable basic education and access to technology for increased productivity. Resources are being concentrated in the hands of a few whereby there’s no circulation of resources across this place to equip smallholder farmers with necessary resources that’ll enable them create opportunities for their youth. Smallholder farmers across this area, lack access to quality inputs and necessary resources to produce and source quality crops. They also lack access to premium markets. Lack of access to agricultural best practices meeting industry standards. The food consumed is not nutritious enough for the people because most of these farmers produce to sell and what they do is to sell the high quality crops and consume the rest. This possesses a huge threat health wise to their communities especially their children. Some of the challenges also include security threats across the target area, threats like kidnapping, crises, clashes, armed banditry. It is believed that by 2050, Lack of sound policies will remain a challenge to the community which will result to lack of increased production, incomes and food security. This will not materialize because of lack of consistent policies and/or effective implementation strategies. This place continues to be given low priority by government and authorities. Agriculture also has a high multiplier effect, which means that agricultural investment can generate high economic and social returns and enhance economic diversification as well as social development. The challenge of Agricultural Adaptation to Climate Change across this place is at a zero level. People in this areas are not aware of climate change and its impact to on their livelihoods and place. It is a huge challenge because there’s a need to educate, create awareness and equip them with best practices to adapt to climate change. Lack of technological advancements could serve as a challenge if left unchanged.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

Our vision will address food security by aggregating smallholder farmers across our target community, provide them with quality inputs, access to funding and other necessary resources to produce and source quality crops, giving them access to premium markets meeting universal quality standards while ensuring good returns to improve their livelihoods. Our vision will promote sustainable agriculture which will strive to help the environment by: Securing sustainable lands for farming; reducing agricultural runoff; preventing pollution of lakes and river streams; saving water to reduce waters wastage; naturally maintaining soil fertility by recycling nutrients on farm; enhancing carbon sequestration by soils and perennial vegetation; We will also use technology to produce the highest quality of food crops with the highest yields. Using technology we will multiply returns to these communities through vertical farming, high scale processes and new genetic technology in the sector. Technology will enable our solution revolutionize the use of labor and machines on all fronts across the target area by redefining roles they play in our food value chain. Incorporating technological advancements to our food chain will deliver the most nutritious and healthiest food consumed locally and globally. Our solution will tackle the issues of policies by advocating for better rollout of policies by relevant authorities which in turn will benefit the people mostly affected. Our solution will promote interconnectedness which will help in addressing challenges of policy making that will affect livelihoods of our target place. Advocacy for Integrated policy approaches at national and international levels will also be a way we ensure proper policies are put in place to make our food systems better for a brighter future for our food chain. However, designing such approaches will not be easy, given the past performance of sector-specific policy-making and the deficiencies in our national governance mechanisms, regulatory systems, and monitoring and accountability. Making our food systems more efficient, inclusive and resilient will help in ending hunger and all forms of malnutrition through income growth and urbanization of rural communities. This will drive changes in dietary patterns which will substantially increase with changes in income patterns.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

Our high level vision is to transform the lives at our farm origin community by investing in food security, food safety and early childhood education to promote economic and social inclusion across this vulnerable community. We would like to create a self-sustaining social enterprise that impact lives at our host community by re-investing (not donation) a share of final sale value into this place for development initiatives. This will bring urbanization to these communities curbing the alarming rate of rural to urban city migration. It will bring about economic and social inclusion across this place and its people promoting rural development. The place and lives of people there will be different than they are now because our project will impact them in multiple ways by creating employment opportunities for their growing population of youth who often end up migrating to urban areas in search of a better life that doesn’t exist. The level of crime across this place will drastically drop as people are engaged with a stable source of income ensuring economic stability for residents. It will empower women across this place with opportunities at our early childhood education centers creating jobs for local women, mothers etc. while giving them access to a safe, affordable and accessible pre-school to send their children to gain quality education where they can rest easy knowing it's operated by a trusted members of their own community. Our educators and parents will work together to develop resilience in children as early as possible through our pre-school programs coming from the farming activities done across their community. This will create a consistent, secure and fair social environment, with clear expectations where children can develop skills in managing themselves in the long run.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

Our vision for a regenerative and nourishing food for our place and people for 2050 is one that will meet the needs of our growing population with higher demand for availability and quality of food, water, sustainable arable land. Food safety issues, nutrition deficiencies, post-harvest losses, regulation inconsistencies and consumer attitudes are all striking challenges which will be met through tackling environmental impacts from our production processes, food security and sustainability. We’ll be using possible solutions which include advancements in food processing technologies, Genetic modification technology, innovative food formulations and the use of farming practices that will improve health, well-being and livelihoods through quality food production, safe food processing chain and ensuring safety of our foods throughout the value chain from production to consumption. Partnerships with organizations that value quality of food consumed will also play important roles in securing food supplies, ensuring high nutrition and quality for our place and people by providing expertise through their vast experience and research capability. We will provide our place and people with access to readily available quality and fresh foods at affordable rates to encourage consumption of nutritional foods and dietary considerations. At our place, smallholder farmers and small farms will play a big role in feeding the place and the people. As of today most of the food consumed at the place are from a few of the men and women behind that effort. They happen to gain a tiny percent of the final sale value. We will practice adaptive agriculture which utilizes a broad spectrum of strategies and skill-sets for growing food responsibly for a much healthier community and people. This will also help us curb the environmental impact of climate change in agriculture on our place and people. With the rate at which the world is battling with global warming and climate change effects most especially our food systems. Our place and people believe it is a necessity to adapt to the reality of climate change in our world, and to develop food chain to healthily feed our people and place. Our vision till 2050 is to readily provide access to and encourage the use of techniques like; mechanized mono cropping, industrial greenhouses, and the zero usage of harmful pesticides and insecticides to reduce the high rates of health conditions, poverty, and erratic destructive weather that mostly arise due to bad conditions of food systems. To compound this trouble, we would use finding opportunity (or revenue) in locally scaled, ecologically conscientious to invest in our for-profit farming to improve livelihoods, health and well-being of the people in our target place. Using Adaptive Agriculture will help us acknowledge the need for individuals to develop and grow their own healthy personal relationships with all aspects of food value chain to ensure safe, quality food. This also includes us building honest, open relationships with our community and ourselves. A recent world population prospects predicts that by 2050, Nigeria will become the third most populated country in the world. Just imagine what that means to the population of Kaduna. The rate at which rural to urban migration is going if continued without intervention like ours, this could lead to scarcity of food, wide spread of hunger and poverty amongst other issues. The UN SDG2 of zero hunger will be hard to achieve. However, by intervention like ours, Kaduna in 2050 will be a place where all its people both in rural and urban areas have access to quality life through nutritious quality food, quality early childhood education which gives the people access to an inclusive economy and social well-being that works for everyone right from the grassroots. In 2050, what we do today will play a huge role in the success of the people and place of target. Our work today intends to setup a food system that utilizes the huge population growth into rural and economic development with improved quality of life for the people. We will build a system that works for all providing easy access to the most fundamental human right which is access to nutritious food. Our work will foster collaboration across our target communities whereby it empowers the people to be self-dependent, to improve their livelihoods through access to stable income growth, to empower the people with the ability to feed themselves (with the potential of feeding the world) with quality nutritious food through the entire food chain. This is a journey that by 2050 intends to build up tolerance and cohesion among the people of Kaduna, fostering rural inclusion to the food system through development initiatives in agriculture across the whole of Kaduna and Nigeria at large.
