Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

These places in  Lagos Ogun , Osun  Ekiti, Ondo and Oyo  States  are our  native land, where we grew up and we know the farming system, the food situation and what are the opportunities and challenges , We know the terrain , planting ,processing , marketing challenges facing the small scale farmers to maximize their potentials to increase food production and processing  to enhance food security , generate jobs and  to alleviate poverty . These selected areas are inhabited by Yoruba people who are more that 60 million people , They have similar culture they plant the same crops due to similar rain volume and the similar climate . They have the same  raining and dry season . In these areas we have identified key food crops and livestock which naturally thrive without much efforts such as Plantain Cassava Yam and Coco yam  and Poultry generally . Skills and shared technological facilities with logistics support will increase food production, enhance value chain in processing to increase value which will thereby promote food security, generate income and alleviate poverty and malnutrition in Nigeria 

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

The Yoruba constitute approximately 35 percent of Nigeria's total population, and around 40 million individuals throughout the region of West Africa. While the majority of the Yoruba live in western Nigeria, there are also substantial indigenous Yoruba communities in Benin, Ghana, Togo.They are the main ethnic group in the states of Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo, which are subdivisions of Nigeria; they also constitute a sizable proportion of Kwara and Kogi States as well as Edo State.

Yoruba culture consists of cultural philosophy, religion and folktales.Yoruba cultural thought is a witness of two epochs. The first epoch is a history of cosmogony and cosmology.Yoruba people eat majorly food from tubers  and fibers such as yam, pounded yam plantain and food made from Cassava such as Gari, Fufu etc. Most of these swallow food are combined with rich  vegetable soup made with various vegetables and fish, meat and chicken . Although many children are addicted to rice and modern food such as noddles and others due to education, and urbanization .

Nigeria is a country in West Africa. Nigeria shares land borders with the Republic of Benin in the west, Chad and Cameroon in the east, and Niger in the north. Nigeria is found in the Tropics, where the climate is seasonally damp and very humid. Nigeria is affected by four climate types; these climate types are distinguishable, The southern part of Nigeria experiences heavy and abundant rainfall.  The annual rainfall received in this region is very high, usually above the 2,000 mm (78.7 in) rainfall totals giving for tropical rain forest climates worldwide. The unique cultural trend for the Yoruba states is that they originated from the same root and also have the same culture where  many are engaged small scale farming, livestock and  aquaculture  especially in semi urban and rural areas and due to the culture and climate.

Due to the climate, culture and homogeneous historical background, we have identified lack of modern skills, technology and logistics as the major inhibiting factors to food security in this region and in Nigeria as Lagos accommodates about 25 million being the commercial nerve centre in West Africa.  Currently due to cosmopolitan nature of of many big cities in this region, Agricultural productivity is very low due to decrease in soil fertility and lack of high yield and hybrid seeds  , high wastage of farm produce as a result of efficient logistics support , poor quality of locally processed staple food  due to crude technology and other challenges which are threats to food security to feed the ever increasing population. All these factors enumerated above had caused serious negative impact in the health of the people such as infant mortality, increase in various diseases such as cancer organ failure such as kidney, lung and liver etc.

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

Currently due to the lack of  effective technological,logistics and lack of modern skills there is low productivity, low quality and serious food wastage in the food systems in these target areas. Fertility of the land has decreased  due to long years of cultivation which calls for new skills ,innovation and creativity to reinstate soil fertility ,High yield hybrid and disease and  drought resistant seeds are needed to meet the current demand. Also population is increasing astronomically especially in Lagos city and others, the  demand for food is ever increasing and due to low supply,the price is not affordable especially for the poor. Furthermore due to lack of good technology,logistics support, and lack of processing skills and modern facilities, all these are the root causes of poor quality, low productivity , lack of motivation to drive youth towards agriculture ,low value , high price and poor distribution system , then we are witnessing hunger malnutrition, prevalence of diseases , poverty and infant mortality etc. In summary by year 2050 , if all these identified challenges are not addressed it will get worst and out of control and it be food disaster and tragedy  because of urbanization and population explosion as a popular slogan " Man must wack"  in  nut shell their will war and public demonstration and civil unrest as we see in various Latin American countries . Their may be civil war and in insecurity as we are seeing today at the Northern part of the country where the religious extremists known as Boko Haram has been killing , kidnapping and displacing million of people due to hunger and poverty  

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

To address these identified challenges threatening access to quality and affordable food for people in South West states  in Nigeria,  We plan to address skills and human capacity gap especially for the small scale farmers who are the main producers of food in these regions. We shall liaise with various farmer associations, farmers cooperatives and other grass-root relevant bodies including institutions to train these farmers with modern skills, and techniques on innovative cultivation of various crops and vegetable from land preparation, good seed selection and growing these crops with most environmentally friendly and cost effective fertilizer for maximum yields . We shall train the old and new farmers  in aquaculture, poultry , piggery and other areas . to minimize cost and  to derive the highest productivity in a sustainable environment coupled with other technical supports such as high yield hybrid and disease and drought resistant seeds and seedlings, Also we shall establish shared facility centers for both farmers and agricultural processors where locally and customized technology shall be installed for group to share and maintain. such as cold room and processing facilities for various group such as fisher men and women , poultry and farmers and processors . Also other technical and logistics supports will include customized transport system to move their produce to the market and also ICT and social media where information and opportunities will shall be shared for various groups for productivity quality , value addition and food security and jobs creation. 

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

Our long term high level vision is to increase locally produced   quality and affordable food for ever increasing population  and to increase jobs, enhance food security and reduce the importation of expired and and formalin contaminated poultry products into the country . Obviously this will increase availability of staple foods, make food affordable and accessible to people thereby increase quality health and life span . Many jobs will be created ,  income generated and drastic decrease in unemployment, malnutrition.

 We shall build the capacity our key player in food chains production system to imbibe the principle of Total Quality Management technique 

Furthermore issue of both farm produce of crops, poultry and fishing community will drastically reduced while low productivity and environmental degradation will be substantially reduced due to new skills and availability of new hybrid and drought and disease resistant species 

Also many energetic and educated  youth will be supported to embrace agriculture to reduce youth global youth unemployment, and other related social vices and religious extremists such as boko haram which has claimed more that  20,000 innocent souls

Furthermore issue of both farm produce of crops, poultry and fishing community will drastically reduced while low productivity and environmental degradation will be substantially reduced due to new skills and availability of new hybrid and drought and disease resistant species 

Also many energetic and educated  youth will be supported to embrace agriculture to reduce youth global youth unemployment, and other related social vices and religious extremists such as boko haram which has claimed more that  20,000 innocent souls 

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

As stated earlier that in South Western States which comprise Lagos, Ogun, Oyo and Ondo States are predominantly Yoruba people with homogeneous climate, culture and farming system with densely populated commercial cities and state capitals. Due to civilization, commercialization, industrialization and rural -urban migration , serious agricultural activities had been abandoned in hand of the old people with crude tools, without modern skills. Currently there is need for urgent action to correct negative trends which had resulted into low agricultural productivity, high cost of food items, low quality and neglect of healthy staple food for processed food such as noodles and other unhealthy snacks which has increased obesity, kidney, cancer diseases and malnutrition. 

Our solution is to strengthen and invigorate the system by giving adequate capacity development, technological and logistical support to the small scale farmers in order to increase productivity, efficiency quality and affordable healthy and nutritious fresh food to the ever increasing population.

We shall collaborate with all necessary stakeholders such as higher institutions ,government agencies and development partners and farmers associations and cooperative societies to tap and leverage on their both human and technological resources to meet the need both the farmers and food processors to enhance efficiency productivity and food security and sufficiency. 

We have identified factors such as lack of modern skills, lack of technology and necessary input, lack adequate logistics support  and lack of access to reliable market as the factors plaguing  the current food system and driving the youth to embrace agriculture as a business or a profession to be engaged in. 

With the collaboration with our partners, we shall put in place good practical  capacity building system suitable for the each group of farmers, fisher men and aquaculture and poultry owners . Support them on selection of hybrid and high yield seeds, fingerlings and chicks etc , introduce environmentally friendly fertilizer and organic products to fight diseases and other parasites that may affect their products or livestock  and other new technologies to reduce costs and increase yields.

Also we shall deploy affordable and easily maintained shared processing facilities located in a strategic locations for optimum utilization to enhance quality and value with adequate packaging and branding   

Necessary shared  logistics supports to evacuate their products from farms to the market or end users in a presentable manner within a short time and without unnecessary wastage and deformation which may reduce the quality, value and price . 

We shall use cooperative and group system to provide necessary  shared technological 

 and agricultural infrastructural amenities such as cold room for the fish market and the poultry processors and other relevant tools to various farmers group based on their needs

Furthermore we shall use modern ICT and social media to connect various groups of farmers to market, end users and off takers to avoid spoilage and to derive commensurate value for their products 

Our strategy is to  strengthen the small scale farmers to embrace modern innovation for enhanced productivity and promote  Total Quality Control Techniques in food production and processing in Nigeria . This will thereby increase quality and quantity of food produced to meet international standard for local consumption and for export . 

Also we aim to derive million of youth and unemployed graduates to embrace modern farming to booth food production and food security to generate employment and reduce poverty and malnutrition in Nigeria
