Nigeria.

Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

I have lived and worked in the city for over a period of 10 years and I have come to love their culture. Port harcourt is a city of diverse people with various food preferences. The heavy rainfall in the area supports a lot of vegetative growth yet not much diverse crops are grown here. The city has a lot of potentials for Agriculture that is waiting to be harnessed and this has greatly informed my love and vision for the city.

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

Port-Harcourt is a beautiful city to live in that offers various cultures. It is the largest city of Rivers State, Nigeria with an estimated population of 1,865,000 as of 2016's report.

The city is known for making the country's best Bole and fish meal so much so that it has a festival that celebrates this meal. You can't get this meal any better outside Port-Harcourt.

It is a riverine region and also an industrial city with a large number of multinational companies doing business particularly related to the petroleum industry. The city has a tropical wet climate which makes it a good place for Agricultural practices.

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

According to a 2018 FAO report, it is stated that with the detering effect of climate change and its negative impact on the global food economy from drought and drastic temperature changes affecting the productivity of Nigerian farmers and leading to an annual 11% loss in productivity, This effect of the above stated problem has resulted to over fertilization using inorganic products resulting  to scorching and wilting of leaves, leeching of soil, pollution of nearby water bodies and inevitably decreased plant growth (FAO 2001).

The challenge we also face is financial and government policies. In a dynamic government like ours, policies can easily change for or against us depending on political or religious factions.

Other challenges include integration of our products across the different cultures in Nigeria due to language and education barrier.

Address the Challenges: Describe how your Vision will address the challenges described in the previous question.

Dreamvert fertilizer seeks to provide sustainable and healthy food for all by using our special waste-wealth raw materials to produce 1000 tons of organic fertilizer monthly that will reach 5000 farmers monthly in Nigeria.

DreamVert  fertilizer is made from almost zero cost raw materials- vegetable and animal waste products carefully harnessed under controlled conditions. Several pilot studies have been carried out and shown to improve crops productivity such as corn, cassava, okro and tomatoes e.t.c by as much as 20-50% fold increase while improving the natural ecosystem of the soil they are used on.

Our waste-wealth raw materials enable us to sell our product 40% cheaper than the existing NPK fertilizers in the martket, while simultaneously increasing their farm productivity- ensuring a cummulative 50% increase in production of rural small shareholder farmers.

We intend to partner with existing associations of farmers such as the YPARD (Young Professionals for Agricultural Development), Youth Devlopment Through Rural Farming, amongst others. These and several other platforms profer networking options for our commodity. We are also exploring affiliate marketing and digital marketing via e-mail, social media and a website for easier accessibility, feedback and wider range of market reach at the National level.

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

A peculiar thing about the city of port harcourt is that foodstuffs there are very expensive as most of what is consumed is transported from other states as there is not sufficient land for farming and there is reduced fertility due to leeching and over fertilization. There's also the issue of environment pollution irrespective of the growing population.

Our solution profers increased fertility for crop growth and reduction in organic waste pollution.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

Dreamvert fertilizer seeks to provide sustainable and healthy food for all by using our special waste-wealth raw materials to produce 1000 tons of organic fertilizer monthly that will reach 5000 farmers monthly in Nigeria. Our focus on agriculture is by recycling organic waste into safe fertilizer that will boost plantlife; improving their quality by 23% and quantity by up to 30% in productivity.

Another infallible value in our product is that we can regulate the nutrient base of our product specific to demand. For example for nitrogen loving plants, we can increase the nitrogen content of such supply as the customer demands and so on.  This is another unique quality that gives us a competitive advantage in the fertilizer industry of Nigeria.

Our solution is providing a renewable source of fertilizer that produces even better results with prolonged use, thus in 5-10years we would be a leading trend in the fertilizer industry contributing to achieving zero hunger in Nigeria.
Our mission is to ensure that by 2050, there would be sufficient organic food produced to meet the population boom in Nigeria, while simultaneously improving the income of local farmers through increase in food production and reducing the impact of organic waste in the environment. Our vision is to be the foremost ecofriendly fertilizer in Nigeria.
