Your Selected Place: what’s the name of the Place you’re developing a Vision for?

Luzon, covering North and South Luzon including Metro Manila consisting of about 50,000 sq km.

Describe your relationship to the place you’ve selected.

I own a small farm in Batangas. I want to improve the agriculture conditions in the Luzon are by digitizing farming. Farms can transition to aquaponics use digital farm technology, young generations of farmers will now be interested in agriculture. Current farmers are 50+ years of age and if we don't revolutionize agriculture, we won't have enough food to feed the growing population.

Describe the People and Place: Provide information that would be helpful for an outsider who has never been there and may have no context about this Place to better understand the area.

San Juan is a tourist destination known for its white-sand beaches. The tourism and aquaculture industries provide jobs to the town's people and income to the town economy.

Because of its fertile land, the municipality is one of the top suppliers of agricultural products in the province. The town has also a coconut wine and pottery industry.

Challenges: Describe the current (2020) and the future (2050) challenges that your food system faces.

Urbanization : Rapid decrease of farmland due to urbanization; 

Aging farmers : Average age of farmers is above 50+

Climate change : Major crops are experiencing stagnant growth rates due to climate changes leading to higher prices

How will Aquaponics help: Farm anywhere - no space limitation; 90% less water than traditional farming; Farming at controlled environment

Brining in Digital farm technology:  Autonomous indoor farming: Farm is monitored thru IoT system and support experts 24x7; Dashboard: Online dashboard to monitor farm status and receive real time alert for issues; Machine learning: Data science to help guide farmers what to plant to yield maximum return

High Level Vision: With these challenges addressed, now provide a high level description of how the Place and the lives of its People will be different than they are now.

Using new technology, we will be encouraging younger generation to be interested in farming. They will bring their best and brightest ideas to revolutionize farming to feed the growing population.

Full Vision: How do you describe your Vision for a regenerative and nourishing food future for your Place and People for 2050?

Our vision will help both the environment using latest technology. Here is a quick run down on who it addresses the six inter connected themes:

Environment: Aquaponics uses 90% less water than traditional farming, this allows us to save precious resources to do agriculture

Diets: Our vision is to grow healthy vegetables without the use of fertilizers, this allows people to consume healthy food.

Culture: We hope to change the mindset of young generations. Currently average age of farmers is 60 years old, with the technology and advancement of aquaponics we hope that our future generations will be interested in agriculture again.

Economics: It is know that aquaponics will generate better yield on crops, this will help farmers earn more and produce more.

Technology: Using IoT and digital tracking, our farms hopefully will be fully automated and will be easier to maintain. We will also create online market place where farmers will have easy access to sell their produce

Policy: As we digitize farming, we hope that the government will invest more in help the farmers up scale.
